Maternal hypomagnesemia causes placental abnormalities and fetal and postnatal mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Magnesium (Mg(2+)) is essential for cellular growth and the maintenance of normal cellular processes. However, little is known about how maternal hypomagnesemia during pregnancy affects fetal growth and development. This study investigated the effects of maternal hypomagnesemia on the late gestation placenta and fetus, and postnatal outcomes until weaning. METHODS: Female CD1 mice consumed a control (0.2% w/w Mg(2+)), moderately Mg(2+) deficient (MMD; 0.02% w/w Mg(2+)) or severely Mg(2+) deficient (SMD; 0.005% w/w Mg(2+)) diet for 4 weeks prior to mating and throughout pregnancy

[Maternal mortality: epidemiology, risk factors and evitability. About ten cases].

OBJECTIVES: To determine maternal mortality rate during the last decade as revealing the quality of obstetrical follow-up and the necessary measures to be taken. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study conducted in the department of gynaecology in the military hospital in Tunis between 1990 and 2001, permitted to count 10 cases of maternal death. RESULTS: Maternal mortality rate was about 33.72/100,000 live births. Mean age of patients was 31.2 years. Primiparity, multiparity, poor socio-economic conditions, high-risk pregnancies and bad follow-up were responsible in 5, 1, 6 and 3 cases …

[Maternal mortality due to venous thromboembolism in France 2016-2018].

Pregnancy and the post-partum period represent a thromboembolic risk situation, with pulmonary embolism (PE) remaining one of the leading causes of direct maternal deaths in developed countries. Between 2016 and 2018 in France, twenty maternal deaths were caused by venous thromboembolic complications (VTE), yielding a Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) of 0.9 per 100,000 live births (95%CI 0.6-1.3), with no change compared to the periods 2013-2015 or 2010-2012. Among these 20 deaths, 1 death was related to cerebral thrombophlebitis, and the remaining 19 were due to PE. Regarding the timing of deat…

[Maternal mortality due to obstetric haemorrhage in France 2016-2018].

Between 2016 and 2018, 20 maternal deaths were related to obstetric haemorrhage, excluding haemorrhage in the first trimester of pregnancy, representing a mortality ratio of 0.87 per 100,000 live births (95% CI 0.5 -1.3). Obstetric haemorrhage is the cause of 7.4% of all maternal deaths up to 1 year, 10% of maternal deaths within 42days, and 21% of deaths directly related to pregnancy (direct causes). Between 2001 and 2018, maternal mortality from obstetric haemorrhage has been considerably reduced, from 2.2deaths per 100,000 live births in 2001-2003 to 0.87 in the period presented here. Never…

Reducing Cardiovascular Maternal Mortality by Extending Medicaid for Postpartum Women.

Maternal mortality has been increasing in the United States over the past 3 decades, while decreasing in all other high-income countries during the same period. Cardiovascular conditions account for over one fourth of maternal deaths, with two thirds of deaths occurring in the postpartum period. There are also significant healthcare disparities that have been identified in women experiencing maternal morbidity and mortality, with Black women at 3 to 4 times the risk of death as their White counterparts and women in rural areas at heightened risk for cardiovascular morbidity and maternal morbid…

Maternal morbidity and mortality due to placenta accreta spectrum disorders.

Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders are an increasing health problem in many parts of the world. They are an important risk factor for adverse maternal outcomes related to delivery, with a reported 18-fold increase in maternal morbidity. Profuse haemorrhage after attempting to remove the placenta is the most frequent complication and can lead to major maternal morbidity and ultimately to maternal death. Morbidity can also arise from the multiple procedures required to treat PAS disorders. Intensive care unit admission, mechanical ventilation, infection, and prolonged hospitalization are

[Maternal mortality due to cardiovascular disease in France 2013-2015].

Between 2013 and 2015, cardiovascular diseases became one of the two leading causes of maternal mortality, with 36 deaths (13.7% of maternal deaths). The overall maternal mortality ratio for cardiovascular diseases is 1.5 per 100,000 live births, stable compared to the 2010-2012 period. The etiologies in order of decreasing frequency are: pre-existing cardiomyopathies (n=10), aortic dissections (n=9), peripartum cardiomyopathies (n=6), myocardial infarction (n=4), valvular cardiopathies (n=4). Non-optimal care occurred in 72% of cases, increasing since the previous triennium (50%). Similarly, …

Maternal mortality in rural Gambia: levels, causes and contributing factors.

A demographic study carried out in a rural area of the Gambia between January 1993 and December 1998 recorded 74 deaths among women aged 15-49 years. Reported here is an estimation of maternal mortality among these 74 deaths based on a survey of reproductive age mortality, which identified 18 maternal deaths by verbal autopsy. Over the same period there were 4245 live births in the study area, giving a maternal mortality ratio of 424 per 100,000 live births. This maternal mortality estimate is substantially lower than estimates made in the 1980s, which ranged from 1005 to 2362 per 100,000 live…

A community-based nested case-control study of maternal mortality.

OBJECTIVES: Population-based information from Pakistan on maternal mortality is inadequate to define the magnitude of the problem or to contribute information on the distribution of clinical causes and risk factors. A population-based survey was conducted in eight urban squatter settlements of Karachi, Pakistan, to address these key issues. METHODS: Pre-coded questionnaires were administered to the 10,135 households to ascertain deaths of household members in the 5 years preceding the survey (1984-1989). A verbal autopsy questionnaire was administered to the 121 households where a female deat…
