Delayed implants in the anterior maxilla with the IMZ-implant system.

One hundred and seventy-three IMZ two-stage implants have been clinically and radiologically evaluated for a 5 year period. The implants were placed in the anterior region of the maxillae of 81 patients to replace lost incisors, cuspids and bicuspids. The implants were placed 3 months or later after loss of natural anterior teeth when the resorption was already in an advanced stage. The implants used in this study consisted of titanium coated with hydroxylapatite. The prosthetic restorations placed on the implants consisted of fixed or removable partial dentures and single crowns. The cumulati…

Cystic lesions of the mandible and maxilla--radiological evaluation and differentiation.

Cystic lesions of the mandible and maxilla are easily recognizable with various imaging modalities: different conventional X-ray films, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. In this article, the author defines and classifies the most-encountered kinds of odontogenic and nonodontogenic cysts and presents in each case the various parameters that should be analyzed in order to reach a radiological diagnosis: location of the lesion within the mandible, its relationship to adjacent structures, its shape, etc. Nevertheless, there remain cystic lesions that cannot be differentiated from…

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla--an association with tooth resorption.

The aneurysmal bone cyst is an uncommon lesion of the jaws. Cases involving the maxilla have been reported infrequently. Despite uncertainty as to the aetiology of the aneurysmal bone cyst, it is regarded as a benign lesion. Conservative surgical treatment with regular postoperative follow-up is recommended. The case described here presented with tooth mobility resulting from extensive root resorption. A review of the literature reveals that significant root resorption is not a commonly reported feature of aneurysmal bone cysts. For the present case we interpret the evidence as supporting a di…

Ossifying fibroma of the mandible and maxilla: review of 18 cases.

A clinical, radiographic, histologic and follow up study of 18 cases of ossifying fibroma involving the mandible and maxilla was performed. Differences in behavior and management according to age, location, radiographic appearance and histopathology were not evident. A wide range of microscopic findings within and between cases was evident, while the radiographic finding consisting of sharp delineation was consistent in all cases. The presence or absence of cementum or cementum-like material and various types of formed elements was likewise of little clinical significance. Finally, a potential…
