A Systematic Review of Definitive Treatment for Inverted Papilloma Attachment Site and Associations With Recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: Inverted papilloma (IP) is the most common benign neoplasm of the nasal cavity with known risk of recurrence. There is no standardized approach to definitive treatment for attachment sites. This systematic review aims to determine whether surgeon choice of technique differs by anatomic attachment site and whether different surgical techniques contribute to reduced rates of recurrence. DATA SOURCES: PubMed and Ovid Medline. REVIEW METHODS: A systematic review was conducted for studies reporting on IP. Those that included IP recurrence rates and primary tumor attachment site were re

Diagnostic and therapeutic aspects in malignant sinonasal lymphoma.

Among head and neck malignancies, lymphoma is the second most frequent cause. They can develop in the head and neck lymph nodes or as extranodal determinations. The onset of malignant lymphoma outside of lymph node registers increasingly frequent, currently over 30% of malignant lymphoma are diagnosed as taking place outside the lymph nodes. The aim of this paper is bringing in discussion and the presentation of current elements on the diagnosis and treatment in case of malignant sinonasal lymphoma, a pathological entity with a growing incidence. This study is a retrospective one, from January

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of the maxillary sinus: a rare case.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma (EMC) is a rare tumor that commonly involves the salivary glands. EMC of the maxillary sinus is extremely rare. We describe here a case of a 50-year-old patient who presented with right cheek swelling for 7 years and bilateral nasal obstruction and right nasal bleeding for 3 months. A pinkish polypoidal mass was seen in the right nasal cavity. Computed tomography scan revealed an expansile soft tissue mass in the right maxillary sinus with erosion of all of its walls. Histopathological examination of the excised specimen confirmed myoepithelial carcinoma with

[Intrasinusal and extrasinusal space-occupying lesion of the maxillary sinus].

A 72-year-old healthy male patient presented with a painless mass on the left cheek which had been growing for 3 months as well as swollen cervical lymph nodes. Computed tomography revealed a space-occupying lesion on the facial wall of the sinus. Biopsy and histological examination of the lesion and a lymph node revealed Hodgkin's and Sternberg-Reed cells. The diagnosis of Hodgkin's disease was confirmed immunohistologically by the detection of atypical blast cell infiltrates with reactivity for CD30 and CD15 surface antigens.

Sinonasal NUT Carcinoma: A Systematic Review With Pooled Analysis and Report of a Case of Extraordinary Survival.

INTRODUCTION: NUT carcinoma (NC) is a rare and aggressive malignancy often occurring in the midline structures of the head and neck. In this study, we present a systematic review and pooled analysis on patients specifically with sinonasal NC (SNC), as well as report a case of a patient with extraordinary survival following presentation with an NC of the maxillary sinus. METHODS: Among 3042 articles retrieved, 27 were included in the final analysis. Clinical outcomes were described for a patient presenting with SNC at a tertiary academic medical center. Predictors of survival were evaluated wi

Extramedullary plasmacytoma of the colon.

Multiple myeloma with extramedullary plasmacytoma is unusual, but associated gastrointestinal involvement is even rarer. A case with initial presentation as solitary plasmacytoma of the clavicle and subsequent lesions in the maxillary sinus, skin, and ascending colon is reviewed. The variable radiographic features of plasmacytoma of the colon are discussed, whether occurring as a solitary finding or in a patient with multiple myeloma.

Extra Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma Simulating a Mucocele: A New Location for the Rare Entity.

Angiofibromas are rare, benign, but locally aggressive vascular tumours which account for 0.05-0.5% of all head and neck neoplasms. The common variant of angiofibromas of head and neck region is Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma (JNAF) which is well published in the literature. Incidence of Extranasopharygeal Angiofibromas (ENAF) is relatively rare and most of the published literature favours maxillary sinus as the most common site. We report a rare clinical entity of ENAF involving the upper lip which is first of its kind in the light of literature review owing to its anatomical location.

Antrochoanal polyps in children.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the characteristics of antrochoanal polyps (ACPs) in children. METHODS: 10 children operated for ACP were investigated retrospectively. Demographic characteristics, surgical and histopathological findings were evaluated. RESULTS: The mean age was 10.2 years. The antral part of ACP was removed through middle meatal antrostomy in four patients, and transcanine sinuscopy was needed in six patients. It was found that the polyp passed through the main ostium in seven patients and accessory ostium in three patients. The antral part of the polyp was found to be cystic in six

Malignant mucosal melanoma of the right maxillary sinus: a case report.

The case of a 74-year-old female is reported. The patient was under long-term review for melanosis affecting the mucosa of the upper right alveolar ridge. The patient developed a primary mucosal melanoma at the site 5 years later and underwent a right maxillectomy and a modified right neck dissection to level 5 nodes. The defect was covered with an obturator; the patient is at present clinically disease free. Mucosal melanomas account for 1% of all melanomas reported. This is a more aggressive tumor than the cutaneous melanoma, which is reflected in the low survival rate of 3 years (approximat

Sinonasal clear cell adenocarcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nonsalivary adenocarcinomas are the most interesting tumors found in the sinonasal area. They are rare tumors arising from surface epithelium. The clear cell type of this tumor is even more rare. We present cytologic findings of clear cell sinonasal adenocarcinoma and related pitfalls. CASE: A 52-year-old woman presented with a left-cheek facial mass of 3-4 years' duration, with progressive enlargement, nasal discharge and discoloration of the lateral side of her left eye. Computed tomography was performed, revealing an expansile mass involving the nasal cavity, left maxillary sin

High resolution CT with image reformation in maxillofacial pathology.

Twenty-four patients with maxillofacial pathology were examined with computed tomography (CT) using thin (1.5-5.0 mm) sections allowing computer reformation of images in multiple planes. Eight patients also had pluridirectional tomography. The patients included 14 with facial trauma, four with acute paranasal sinus infections, and six with suspected neoplasms. High resolution CT with reformations allowed thorough evaluation of facial trauma. Fracture sites were correctly identified, as were the relation of fragments to vital structures. The form of structural facial alteration was easily asses

[Sinonasal glomangiopericytoma--case report].

Haemangiopericytoma is a rare vascular tumor originated from perivascular cells. A sinonasal-type of haemangiopericytoma is called glomangiopericytoma. This type of hemangiopericytoma is usually of low malignant potential. The most common symptoms are nasal breathing disturbances and epistaxis. The clinical diagnosis may be difficult. The radiological imaging techniques (CT) can provide adequate information with regard to extension of the tumor, although final histological confirmation is essential. Surgery is the treatment of choice. We present a case of 45-year-old male patient complaining o

A massive sinonasal psammomatoid variant of juvenile ossifying fibroma: Report of a rare entity.

Juvenile ossifying fibroma (JOF) is an uncommon, benign, bone-forming neoplasm with an aggressive local growth that is distinguished from other fibro-osseous lesions primarily by its age of onset, clinical presentation and aggressive behaviour. JOF is considered as a variant of the ossifying fibroma (OF) and the former includes psammomatoid JOF (PsJOF) and Trabecular JOF (TrJOF). Both variants involve the craniofacial bones with the trabecular variant being more common in the jaws and the psammomatoid variant being more common in the craniofacial skeleton. PsJOF is an unique variant of JOF tha

Metastatic esthesioneuroblastoma in a horse.

A 17-year-old horse developed severe proptosis of the left eye over a period of 1.5 years. At post-mortem examination a neoplasm was found involving the left ethmoid bone, left maxillary sinus, left orbit, left superior turbinate, and the left eye. Tumour cells were arranged in nests separated by a fine fibrovascular stroma. Immunohistochemically, the tumour cells were labelled by antibodies against neurofilament protein, synaptophysin, glial fibrillary acidic protein and S-100 protein antigen, but were negative for chromogranin A, cytokeratin and desmin. Electronmicroscopically, the cells sho
