[Supernumerary teeth in the deciduous dentition].

The Authors presented sovrannumeraries (S) teeth in primary dentition, and the pedodontic, surgical and orthodontic problems. Semeiotics signs, and X Ray suggested, are described. All the types of S. teeth are showed: supplementaries, conoides, tuberculates and infundibuliformes. For every type characteristics, problems and surgical timing are described. Tuberculates and infundibuliformes teeth are the most dangerous for the permanent teeth interrupted: eruption delay, dilacerations, impactions, fusion, follicles, diseases, are reported. The direction of the growth of S. teeth must be analyzed

[Branchiogenic preauricular fistulae].

Seventeen patients with dimples, fistulae and cysts in the region of the cheek and the preauricular field are reported. All are located in the neighborhood of the dorsal end of the first visceral arch. Both the fistulae of the ascending helix and the upper preauricular fistulae must be regarded as relics of the dorsal end of the first branchial cleft. This interpretation supports the theory of Wood-Jones and I-Chuan according to which the tragus is formed from the material of the mandibular arch, and the remaining part of the auricle from the mesoderm of the second visceral arch. Modified Le Fort I Osteotomy and Genioplasty for Management of Severe Dentofacial Deformity in β-Thalassaemia Major: Case report and review of the literature.

β-thalassaemia major is an autosomal recessive form of haemoglobinopathy that is characterised by complete lack of production of the β-chains resulting in multiple complications that include severe anaemia, failure to thrive and skeletal abnormalities. Facial deformities induced by β-thalassaemia major are rare and are very challenging to treat from a surgical point of view. We report a 33-year-old female patient with β-thalassaemia major who presented to the Dental & Maxillofacial Surgery Department, Sultan Qaboos University Hospital, Muscat, Oman, in 2017 with gross dentofacial skeletal defo

Gorlin-Goltz Syndrome: A Rare Case Report.

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GGS) is an autosomal dominant disorder with a high degree of penetrance and variable expressivity. It is a rare phakomatosis characterized by multiple odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs), bifid ribs, and other abnormalities. The incidence of the GGS is estimated at 1 in 57,000-1 in 256,000 in the general population. The OKC is frequently the presenting manifestation of this syndrome. We report a case of a 25-year-old male patient, presenting with a swelling in the right side of the face which was diagnosed as GGS by correlating the clinical findings, histological findings, an

Ultrasound-Guided Nd:YAG Laser Intervention in the Orofacial Region: Report of a Case of Multi-Focal Venous Malformation.

Venous malformation is acongenital vascular system structure malformation caused by abnormal vascular endothelial cell morphology, which can occur in any tissue or organ of the oral and maxillofacial region. Laser treatment is currently a commonly used minimally invasive treatment. In this case, the patient with congenital multiple venous malformation was treated with Nd:YAG laser for the visible submucosal part, and the subcutaneous part under the chin tip was treated with ultrasound. The chin tip was treated with ultrasound guided by the chair to achieve the purpose of minimally invasive las

Ectopically Positioned Tooth Piercing the Philtrum.

A variety of eruption disturbances arise during the transitional dentition period, which can be broadly classified as disturbances related to time and disturbances related to position. The occurrence of ectopic eruption is relatively common, but ectopically positioned tooth piercing the philtrum is a rare clinical presentation. This is a case report of a 70-year-old female who presented with the chief complaint of an abnormally positioned tooth piercing out from the upper lip to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Karnavati School of Dentistry, Uvarsad, Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Indi

Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome: pathophysiology, upper airway evaluation and surgical treatment.

This paper describes the pathophysiology of the upper airway and the methods of evaluation which include mainly the Mueller maneuver, and cephalometrics. The management of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is determined by the level of daytime dysfunction, the degree of cardiopulmonary complications, age, co-existing medical problems, life style, and the extent of the upper airway obstruction and abnormality. Continuous positive airway pressure (C-PAP), uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP), and permanent tracheostomy are procedures indicated depending on the severity of the case. Midline las

Apnoea-hypopnoea and mandibular retrusion as uncommon findings associated with Proteus syndrome.

The aetiology of Proteus syndrome (PS) is yet unclear. This disease includes partial gigantism of the hands and/or feet, nevi, hemihypertrophy due to overgrowth of long bones, subcutaneous tumours, macrocephaly, cranial hyperostosis, and pulmonary and renal abnormalities. This case report is about a 17-year-old boy with two uncommon findings associated with PS: apnoea-hypopnoea and mandibular retrusion. A multidisciplinary team was important to provide professional care for this patient. Dentists and physicians proposed an adjusted treatment plan. Maxillary disjunction was achieved with a comb

Comparison of conventional surgery with motorized trephine in bone harvest from the anterior iliac crest.

OBJECTIVE: A prospective study was performed to compare morbidity associated with the harvest of corticocancellous block grafts (CCBG) by conventional surgery and procurement of cancellous cores (CC) by means of a motorized trephine from the anterior ilium. STUDY DESIGN: Seventy-six patients requiring 30 mL or less of cancellous bone for maxillofacial reconstruction were placed into 2 treatment groups. One group underwent harvest of CCBGs in the traditional open medial approach to the anterior ilium. The second group had CCs harvested through a 0.5- to 1.0-cm incision with a motor-driven trep

Comprehensive rhinoplasty technique to correct the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity using conchal composite grafts.

INTRODUCTION: Anatomical abnormalities and heterogeneous tissue deficiencies of the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity challenges the cranio-maxillofacial plastic surgeon to create a functional, yet aesthetically pleasing nose. The authors propose a comprehensive rhinoplasty technique to correct the bilateral cleft lip nasal deformity using composite conchal grafts. PATIENTS: Five children with bilateral cleft lip nasal deformities had nasal reconstruction using conchal composite grafts, averaging 5 years in age at time of surgery. Patient follow-up averaged 21 months. METHODS: An open tip

Timing of hard palatal closure: a critical long-term analysis.

The controversy about timing of cleft palate surgical procedures is focused on early palatoplasty for improved speech versus delayed hard palate repair for undisturbed facial growth. Timing and technique of palate repair are the most important influences on speech and facial growth, yet there is no consensus on the age or technique for surgery. The Oxford Cleft Palate Study was initiated to evaluate critically the long-term follow-up of 44 patients with early versus late closure of the hard palate. A multidisciplinary approach was used to determine the incidence of speech deficiencies, palatal

A new congenital cleft palate New Zealand rabbit model for surgical research.

Cleft palate repair is a challenging procedure for cleft surgeons to teach, and in research, it can be difficult to evaluate different techniques and develop new treatments. In this study, a congenital cleft palate New Zealand rabbit model has been described and could be beneficial in future studies concerning cleft palate repair. Pregnant New Zealand rabbits received 1.0 mg dexamethasone injection intramuscularly once a day from the 13th gestation day (GD13) to GD16. On GD31. Newborn rabbits were delivered by cesarean sections, fed with a standardized gastric tube feeding method, and divided

Somatosensory evoked potentials of inferior alveolar nerve.

PURPOSE: The use of inferior alveolar nerve somatosensory evoked potentials may represent an objective means of evaluating sensory nerve function in the maxillofacial region. The aim of this work was to confirm the existence of a standard sequence of prominent events in the trigeminal somatosensory evoked potentials (TSEPs) of inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) waveform, examine those components and their normal variability by statistical analysis, and discuss TSEPs' nervous origin and some patterns of TSEPs' abnormalities due to dysfunctional nerves. MATERIALS AND METHODS: TSEPs were obtained fol

3D analysis of dentofacial deformities: a new model for clinical application.

This article examines the application of 3D fusion of postoperative anatomy superimposed upon preoperative anatomy to evaluate the changes in soft tissues relative to fixed bony structures. The value of 3D analysis is to predict and quantitatively measure the soft tissue changes associated with skeletal orthognathic surgery. An example is shown of changes in the upper lip that occur after Le Fort I osteotomy, illustrating how these soft tissue changes can be measures with the 3D software. Uses and future applications of this technology are described.
