The impact of traffic legislation on maxillofacial trauma: A global retrospective review.

Maxillofacial trauma remains a critical public health concern, with road traffic accidents (RTAs) being a leading cause, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. While preventive measures like helmet laws and alcohol restrictions have shown efficacy, gaps persist in understanding their direct impact on maxillofacial injury rates globally. A retrospective, multi-database review (PubMed, WHO reports, grey literature) analyzed national traffic laws and maxillofacial trauma incidence. Data from 37 studies across five continents were evaluated using RStudio® for statistical correlation (p

The Trigeminal Nerve Injury.

Trigeminal nerve branches are never far from the operating field of the oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Increasingly the surgeon is required to provide accurate diagnosis and grading of trigeminal nerve injury, and surgical management by oral and maxillofacial surgeons will become common. Although trauma and ablative procedures for head and neck pathology can cause injuries, dentoalveolar surgical procedures remain an important cause of injury to the fifth cranial nerve, with the third division being the main branch affected. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons should be aware of strategies of avo

Helping anesthesiologists understand facial fractures.

Injuries to the oral and maxillofacial region are commonly encountered, and the appropriate management of patients with these injuries frequently requires the expertise of an anesthesiologist. Injuries to this region may involve any combination of soft tissue, bone, and teeth. Injuries to these structures often produce anesthesia-related challenges, which must be overcome to achieve optimal outcomes. This article addresses the common challenges faced by anesthesiologists specific to patients with facial fractures.

Maxillofacial trauma scoring systems.

The changing complexity of maxillofacial fractures in recent years has created a situation where classical systems of classification of maxillofacial injuries fall short of defining trauma particularly that observed with high-velocity collisions where more than one region of the maxillofacial skeleton is affected. Trauma scoring systems designed specifically for the maxillofacial region are aimed to provide a more accurate assessment of the injury, its prognosis, the possible treatment outcomes, economics, length of hospital stay, and triage. The evolution and logic of such systems along with …
