[Racism in health care (part 3): the mediterranean syndrome].

The "Mediterranean syndrome" is an ethno-racial prejudice defining a supposed cultural practice whereby patients from the Mediterranean region express their pain more demonstratively than others. The origins of this syndrome can be traced back in time, and the group of patients labeled under this term has evolved over time to include other populations. It might be comforting to assume that "Mediterranean syndrome" is a thing of the past. However, it is still very much present in healthcare today, and remains a source of racism in healthcare. This article analyses and presents the origins of th…

Chemical Characterization of Mediterranean Macroalgae With a Focus on Antioxidant Molecules Through the Use of Liquid Chromatographic Techniques.

Seaweeds represent an excellent vegetable protein resource capable of supporting the objectives of the sustainable blue economy. Today, attention toward algae is growing, due to their applications, both in biofuel production and as an alternative source of healthy food and nutraceuticals. The objective of this work was to valorize marine macroalgae coming from the Mediterranean area in order to be able to expand their potential use in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical industries, maintaining the circularity of financial and biological resources. Micronutrients with higher antioxidant activi

Comparison of trends in habitat and resource selection by the Spanish Festoon, Zerynthia rumina, and the whole butterfly community in a semiarid Mediterranean ecosystem.

Butterfly community and single species based approaches were taken to establish conservation priorities within a nature reserve in Central Spain. In this study, patch type (sclerophyllous, halophilous, or disturbed), potential herbaceous nectar availability, potential woody plant nectar availability, total nectar availability, and two approximations to plant diversity (herbaceous and woody plant diversity) were evaluated as variables that account for adult butterfly density. Butterfly communities in the reserve, which consist mostly of generalist species, were denser in relatively wet areas do

Medical perspective: macular degeneration (AMD) and human sight in the future.

The author concisely presents the results of his 30-year investigations about the harmful influence of the higher sun radiation on the eyes. The investigations were carried out among the population of the Island of Rab, situated in the northern part of the Adriatic sea. This geographical region has been characterized by higher doses of the global sun radiation compared with the remaining part of the Republic of Croatia, and partly with the rest of the Mediterranean. The author proved it by his own measurements of UV-B, UV-A and the global sun radiation. The number of the diseased from the macu

Mitochondrial DNA phylogeny and the reconstruction of the population history of a species: the case of the European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus).

Analysis of mitochondrial DNA restriction fragment length polymorphism in European anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) revealed a large number of mitotypes that form two distinct clusters (phylads). Phylad A consists of one common mitotype and many rare secondary mitotypes that are one mutational step removed from the main type. Nucleotide diversity and number of homoplasious changes are low. Phylad B has a complex pattern of mitotype connectedness, high nucleotide diversity, and a large number of homoplasious changes. It is suggested that the two phylads evolved in isolation from each other and

Investigation of Rickettsia conorii antibodies in the Antalya area.

Mediterranean spotted fever, caused by Rickettsia conorii, is a tick-borne infection. Serum samples for screening R. conorii antibodies of professionally exposed persons in the Antalya region, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, were analyzed. R. conorii IgG antibodies were detected in 13 of 98 (13.3%) serum samples. Mediterranean spotted fever antibodies were found to be positive in 9.4% of the men and 15.2% of the women (a total of 13 cases). Only three cases had a history of fever and rash.

Comprehensive chemical characterization of PM2.5 in the large East Mediterranean-Middle East city of Beirut, Lebanon.

The chemical composition of PM2.5 at two sites in Lebanon, a country in the East Mediterranean - Middle East region, is investigated in the spring and summer seasons. The average PM2.5 concentrations were of (29 ± 16) µg/m3 for Beirut urban site and (32 ± 14) µg/m3 for Beirut suburban site. This study showed that the geographic location of the East Mediterranean region, such as its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea and the dust storm intrusion are a significant contributor to the high PM levels from natural sources, which cannot be mitigated, rendering the PM2.5 WHO annual Air Quality guideli…

G6PD haplotypes spanning Xq28 from F8C to red/green color vision.

The most telomeric region of the human X chromosome within band Xq28 consists of a gene-rich region of about 3 Mb which contains the genes for coagulation factor VIIIc, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), and red/green color vision. We have studied five polymorphic sites from this region, in a sample of normal people from the Cosenza province of Southern Italy. These sites, which span a distance of some 350 kb, are in strong linkage disequilibrium. Of the 32 possible haplotypes only 10 were found, and 4 of these account for 80% of all X chromosomes analyzed. In addition, we found that al

The Mediterranean Mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) as Intermediate Host for the Anisakid Sulcascaris sulcata (Nematoda), a Pathogen Parasite of the Mediterranean Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta).

Sulcascaris sulcata (Anisakidae), a pathogenic nematode of sea turtles, may cause ulcerous gastritis with different degrees of severity. Previous studies demonstrated a high prevalence of infection in the Mediterranean loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), although no data on the potential intermediate hosts of this nematode has been published thus far from the Mediterranean basin. Here, using molecular analyses, we demonstrated that the cross sections of nematode larvae observed histologically in Mediterranean mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) collected from a farm along the Tyrrhenian coast

Macular involvement in secondary systemic amyloidosis.

PURPOSE: A patient with subretinal and preretinal hemorrhage after secondary systemic amyloidosis due to familial Mediterranean fever is presented. METHODS: Case presentation. RESULTS: A 30-year-old woman with secondary systemic amyloidosis secondary to familial Mediterranean fever presented with painless visual loss in the right eye. The examination demonstrated multiple subretinal and preretinal hemorrhages, massive deposits which may represent amyloid material at the left macular region. After 6 months, the hemorrhages disappeared, but deposits persisted. CONCLUSIONS: The macular deposit

Comparative phylogeography of Atlantic bluefin tuna and swordfish: the combined effects of vicariance, secondary contact, introgression, and population expansion on the regional phylogenies of two highly migratory pelagic fishes.

Comparative phylogeography has revealed remarkable patterns of concordance in the maternal phylogenies of many species. The phylogeography and historical demography of the mitochondrial control region I for 607 Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) and 275 swordfish (Xiphias gladius) were analyzed to clarify the complex phylogenetic signals in the North Atlantic-Mediterranean region where they are sympatric. Atlantic bluefin tuna mtDNA is polyphyletic, and includes rare sequences sister to Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) and introgressed albacore (Thunnus alalunga) sequences. There…

Periodontal disease in patients with familial Mediterranean fever: from inflammation to amyloidosis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Familial Mediterranean fever stimulates a very intense acute-phase reactants response and if left untreated eventually leads to amyloidosis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of periodontal disease among patients with familial Mediterranean fever in the Black Sea region in Turkey and to evaluate whether periodontitis is related to amyloidosis in patients with familial Mediterranean fever. MATERIAL AND METHODS: One-hundred and thirty three patients with familial Mediterranean fever and 50 healthy subjects were included in this study. Periodontal he

The status of strongyloidiasis in the Mediterranean countries.

Strongyloidiasis is considered one of the most serious parasitic infections globally, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. The disease's public health significance is substantial, as the infection can remain dormant for decades in the host and may be activated as hyperinfection after immunity dysregulation caused by immunosuppression. Strongyloides stercoralis infection is prevalent in tropical regions, whereas cases are usually reported sporadically in non-tropical countries and are estimated to cause asymptomatic chronic infection in 600 million people worldwide. Strongyloidiasis

Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis: no longer just a Mediterranean disease?

Multiple symmetrical lipomatosis is a rare condition, of which the etiology remains unclear. Most reported cases have been from the Mediterranean countries, and it is generally thought of as a disorder characteristic of that region. However, there have been 11 cases reported in Japan since 1978, suggesting that this condition is no longer confined to Mediterranean countries.

Geographic and host size variations as indicators of Anisakis pegreffii infection in European pilchard (Sardina pilchardus) from the Mediterranean Sea: Food safety implications.

European pilchards are traditionally eaten marinated or salted in the Mediterranean countries often without thermal processing or gutting due to small size. Since ingestion of live third stage Anisakis larvae represents a causing agent in the onset of anisakiasis, the aim of our study was to assess prevalence and intensity of Anisakis infection in European pilchards originating from different Mediterranean regions in a three-year sampling period (2013-2015). A total of 1564 specimens of European pilchard collected from two geographically distinct sampling regions (western Mediterranean and Adr…

Evaluating and adapting the Mediterranean diet for non-Mediterranean populations: a critical appraisal.

This review outlines the limitations of current techniques for evaluating the Mediterranean diet in Mediterranean versus non-Mediterranean populations. Differences between the two populations with regard to the foods that are available, food processing and preparation techniques, and eating and lifestyle habits may influence the implementation and effects of a Mediterranean diet in non-Mediterranean regions. For example, the composition of food groups may vary significantly, due to differences in the specific foods within a food group and to differences in aspects of food production and prepar…
