[Spontaneous pontine hemorrhage. An analysis of 38 cases].

In 38 patients suffering from spontaneous pontine hemorrhages arterial hypertension was the most common risk factor. 31 patients, of whom 30 died, suffered centro-paramedian pontine hemorrhage leading to coma, hypertensive crisis, respiratory failure, cardiac arrhythmia, miosis and tetraparesis. Most cases showed involvement of the mesencephalon [17] and fourth ventricle [14]. The other seven patients demonstrated dorsotegmental [5] or hemipontine [2] hemorrhages with complex neuroophthalmologic signs, other cranial nerve lesions, and ataxia or hemiparesis; all these patients survived, some ev…

The motor cortex of the sheep: laminar organization, projections and diffusion tensor imaging of the intracranial pyramidal and extrapyramidal tracts.

The laminar organization of the motor cortex of the sheep and other large domestic herbivores received scarce attention and is generally con … cortex to the pyramids in the brainstem, and well evident tracts descending to the tegmentum of the mesencephalon and dorsal pons. Our data contrast the general representation of the motor system of this species, considered to be predominantly based on extra-pyramidal tracts that originate from central pattern generators in the brainstem.

Population densities predict forebrain size variation in the cleaner fish Labroides dimidiatus.

The 'social brain hypothesis' proposes a causal link between social complexity and either brain size or the size of key brain parts known to … the diencephalon and telencephalon (that together form the forebrain). In contrast, the size of the mesencephalon, rhombencephalon, and brain stem, assumed more basal in function, were independent of local fish densities. Selective enlargement of brain parts, that is mosaic brain adjustment, appears to be driven by population density in cleaner fish.

Parkinson's disease: the syndrome, the pathogenesis and pathophysiology.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterised by a slowly expanding degeneration of neurons particularly in the mesencephalon. The causes are unknown although risk factors in the genetic and toxic domain are being discovered. An important pathophysiological feature in PD is the loss of part of the dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra (SN) resulting in a specific dysorganisation of the complicated basal ganglia (BG) circuits. The relay functions at the level of the striatum e.g., are out of balance leading to disturbed subcortico-cortical interactions. At a functional level this is shown by…

[Brain stem glioma].

Brain-stem gliomas occur mainly in childhood and are localized in the mesencephalon, pons and medulla oblongata. Diagnosis is a domain of MRI, requiring T2, T1 and KM. CT shows hemorrhage and calcification well. The criteria are the primary site, size, tumor growth, brain-stem enlargement, delineation, intralesional structure, exophytic components and enhancement. Secondary criteria are herniation, hydrocephalus and liquorgenic seeding. In CT glioma are hypodense, in MRI hyperintense in T2 and hypointense in T1. Enhancement is seen in 25-60% and does not allow differentiation of tumor vs nontu…

Subpopulations of migrating neurons express different levels of LHRH in quail and chick embryos.

LHRH neurons of the septal-preoptic area originate in the olfactory placode and migrate in the olfactory nerve into the brain during embryonic development. In adult birds, LHRH neurons have been found in the septal-preoptic area, mesencephalon and more recently in the lateral anterior nucleus of the thalamus (LA). LHRH neurons of the LA do not originate in the olfactory placode. Using immunocytochemistry, we examined the distribution of LHRH neurons in the embryonic and adult quail nervous system. The pattern of LHRH immunostaining in quail embryos was similar to that seen in chick embryos. Ho…

Dopaminergic involvement in locomotion elicited from the ventral pallidum/substantia innominata.

Microinjection of the indirect GABAA antagonist, picrotoxin, or the mu opioid agonist, Tyr-D-Ala-Gly-NMe-Phe-Gly-ol (DAGO), into the ventral pallidum and substantia innominata (VP/SI) increases locomotor activity in rats. The VP/SI has direct and indirect projections to the region of the ventral mesencephalon containing dopamine perikarya, and to certain dopamine terminal fields, including the nucleus accumbens. Thus, it is possible that modulation of the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system by pharmacological stimulation in the VP/SI may play a role in the locomotor stimulant response. It was sh…

Attentional Deficit as the Primary Manifestation of an Isolated Midbrain Infarction.

A prominent attentional deficit is an uncommon primary manifestation of an isolated midbrain infarction. We present the case of a 62-year-old man with an acute right midbrain infarct who presented with a marked attentional deficit, observed as repeated forgetting to flush the toilet. His classical neurological signs, including mild ataxia and dysarthria, were minor compared with his functionally impaired cognitive dysfunction. This case illustrates a potential dissociation between motor signs and cognitive impairment in patients with midbrain lesions and emphasizes the value of performing a ne

Human Midbrain Organoids Enriched With Dopaminergic Neurons for Long-Term Functional Evaluation.

Human midbrain organoids with functional dopaminergic (DA) neurons are invaluable for the therapeutic development of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, current methods face significant limitations, including challenges in generating pint-sized organoids enriched with DA neurons and the lack of robust functional assays for efficiently evaluating neural networks over extended periods. Here we present an innovative approach that combines developmental patterning with mechanical cutting to produce small midbrain organoids, with diameters less than 300 μm, suitable for long-term evaluation, along w

Unravelling cell type-specific responses to Parkinson's Disease at single cell resolution.

Parkinson's Disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. The pathological hallmark of PD is loss of dopaminergic neurons and the presence of aggregated α-synuclein, primarily in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) of the midbrain. However, the molecular mechanisms that underlie the pathology in different cell types is not currently understood. Here, we present a single nucleus transcriptome analysis of human post-mortem SNpc obtained from 15 sporadic Parkinson's Disease (PD) cases and 14 Controls. Our dataset comprises ∼84K nuclei, representing all major cell types

[Unilateral ptosis induced by pure midbrain infarction: a case report].

We describe herein a case with left-side ptosis induced by pure midbrain infarction in a 49-year-old woman. She also presented with diplopia and right-side cerebellar ataxia. MRI demonstrated new ischemic stroke of the left ventral paramedian midbrain. In this case, ischemia of the left oculomotor fascicles caused the left-side ptosis and diplopia, and ischemia of the left decussation of the superior cerebellar peduncle caused the right-side cerebellar ataxia. These symptoms resulted from inner superior medial mesencephalic branch infraction. This case offers an educational example that can be

Tuberculosis granuloma in the midbrain causing wall-eyed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (Webino).

A 24-year-old female developed bilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia with exotropia and loss of convergence, in association with a tuberculous granuloma situated in the midline midbrain at the level of the third ventricle. We labeled this case Webino (after Martin Lubow), and to our knowledge, this is the first reported case occurring in association with an intraparenchymal tuberculous granuloma.

[Angioarchitecture of the medulla oblongata in the guinea pig].

The angioarchitectonic regions in the medulla oblongata and the midbrain of 14 grown-up guinea pigs are discribed. According to direction and number of the supplying arteries, three sections are distinguished. The medial part is supplied worst. It contains the medial row of the nuclei of the cranial nerves. The more lateral parts have always double or treble supplies. They are distinguished by a high capillary density. Those parts are associated with the medullar nuclei of the cranial nerves.
