Cadmium exposure: health hazards of silver cottage industry in developing countries.

In countries such as India, the silver jewelry industry is an important cottage industry. Silver is mixed with cadmium and then used to make silver jewelry. During this process there is a formation of cadmium fumes, and the workers inhale the fumes. Cadmium is a neurotoxic and nephrotoxic heavy metal, and there are no national policies to prevent exposure to such chemicals. We will present a case of cadmium induced peripheral neuropathy, nephropathy, and decreased bone density.

Glutathione Transferase as a Potential First-Tier Biomarker of Environmental Pollution in Workers and Residents of Umbria Region, Italy.

Erythrocyte glutathione transferase (e-GST) and oxidized human serum albumin (HSAox) were used as biomarkers to assess the environmental health of a foundry and a ceramics factory located in the Umbria region (Italy). While HSAox level indicates that no relevant oxidative stress is present in workers of either company, a distinct overexpression of e-GST, also present in non-workers residents, suggests exposure to broad environmental stressors that may be attributed to common sources. A more careful analysis of different job sectors and the effect of filtering facepieces indicates that the work

Noise-induced hearing loss: a possible marker for high blood pressure in older noise-exposed populations.

The present study assessed the relationships among occupational noise exposure, noise-induced hearing loss, and high blood pressure. The study population consisted of 245 retired metal assembly workers from Pittsburgh aged 56 to 68 with chronic noise exposure of 30 or more years at greater than or equal to 89 dBA. Results of the audiometric testing indicated 52% of the younger workers (ages 56 to 63) have severe noise-induced hearing loss (greater than or equal to 65 dBA loss at 3, 4, or 6 kHz) and 67% of older workers (ages 64 to 68). Body mass index and alcohol intake were significantly rela

Comparative toxicity of trivalent and hexavalent chromium to rabbits. II. Morphological changes in some organs.

Toxicity of trivalent and hexavalent chromium compounds was investigated in experimental rabbits to ascertain health hazards among industrial workers of miners occupationally exposed to such chemicals. Brain, kidney and myocardium showed a tendency to accumulate chromium irrespective of its valency state; the morphological changes were more marked in animals exposed to hexavalent chromium. However, no definite co-relation could be observed between the concentration of the metal and the degree of histological changes in these organs.

Leukemia Incidence by Occupation and Industry: A Cohort Study of 2.3 Million Workers from Ontario, Canada.

Although a significant body of evidence has attributed certain occupational exposures with leukemia, such as benzene, formaldehyde, 1,3-butadiene and ionizing radiation, more research is needed to identify work environments at increased risk for this disease. Our study aimed to identify occupational and industry groups associated with an elevated incidence of leukemia using a diverse cohort of workers' compensation claimants from Ontario, Canada. A total of 2,363,818 workers in the Occupational Disease Surveillance System (ODSS) cohort, with claims between 1983-2019, were followed for malignan

Effects of occupational exposure to mercury vapors on T-cell and NK-cell populations.

The counts of lymphocytes, (CD3+) T-cells, (CD4+) T-helper and (CD 8+) T-suppressor and (CD 16+) NK-cells were determined in the peripheral blood of 81 males with a history of occupational exposure to metallic mercury vapors and in 36 males without this exposure. For the determination of T-cell populations monoclonal antibodies were used in indirect immunofluorescence tests. The weighted mean of mercury concentrations in air was 0.028 mg x m-3. Mercury concentration in the urine of the exposed subjects ranged from 10-240 micrograms x l-1, and in blood it was from 4-30 micrograms x l-1. Stimula

Nonfibrous mineralogical analysis of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid from blast-furnace workers.

Steelworkers are exposed to many pollutants, and they are at risk for developing lung cancer. We demonstrated previously that steelworkers may be subject to an occult exposure to amphiboles in the plant environment. In the current study, we further analyzed bronchoalveolar lavage fluid of steelworkers by measuring intramacrophagic trace-metal content and nonfibrous mineral particles, using the particle-induced x-ray emission method and electron microscopy, respectively. Forty-seven blast-furnace workers and 45 healthy white-collar workers volunteered for this study. Significantly increased lev

Occupational exposure to metals among battery recyclers in France: Biomonitoring and external dose measurements.

In battery-recycling facilities, exposure to trace elements may occur through inhalation of contaminated dust or vapor emanating from the treatment processes. Exposure of battery-recycling workers to lead has been quite well covered in the literature. In contrast, we lack data on exposure to other elements contained in batteries. The aim of this study was to characterize the exposure of French battery recyclers to multiple elements using biomonitoring and airborne measurements. Eighty-six workers participated in the study. Inhalable metal concentrations were determined for personal airborne sa

Exposures and urinary biomonitoring of aliphatic isocyanates in construction metal structure coating.

BACKGROUND: Isocyanates are highly reactive chemicals used widely in metal structure coating applications in construction. Isocyanates are potent respiratory and skin sensitizers and a leading cause of occupational asthma. At present, there is no cure for isocyanate asthma and no biomarkers of early disease. Exposure reduction is considered the most effective preventive strategy. To date, limited data are available on isocyanate exposures and work practices in construction trades using isocyanates, including metal structure coatings. OBJECTIVES: The primary objectives of this work were: i) to
