Polymer microspheres have been widely used as a stationary phase for liquid chromatography. In this work, we prepared and synthesized polystyrene-methyl methacrylate (PS-PMMA) microspheres, modified them, characterized the microspheres to have good chromatographic properties, and then used them as a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) stationary phase to explore their applications. A 68-year-old woman with a fragility fracture of the fourth lumbar vertebra was treated with a first vertebroplasty using methylmetacrylate with an initial good pain relief. Early painful recurrent vertebral fractures led to iterative vertebroplasties. Furthermore prophylactic treatment with methylmetacrylate of a non-fractured vertebra located between two previously injected ones did not prevent its collapse. This case report underlines the lack of a clear evaluation benefit/risk ratio of these procedures in patients with non-malignant bone fragility.

We performed a study to evaluate the corneal endothelial cell response in 26 patients who received a polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) intraocular lens and 26 patients who received a soft, nonfolded poly-hydroxy-ethylmethacrylate (poly-HEMA) intraocular lens after posterior chamber phacoemulsification. Specular microscopy and pachymetry were done before surgery and a mean of 8 or more weeks after surgery. The mean percent cell loss was 8.2% in the PMMA group and 10.7% in the poly-HEMA group. Central corneal endothelial cell loss was compared following primary insertion of folded posterior chamber silicone intraocular lenses (IOLs) in 29 eyes and Sinskey-style polymethylmethacrylate posterior chamber IOLs in 20 eyes. Thirty one intraocular lenses removed from human eyes 2 months to 30 years after implantation were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Binkhorst 4 loop lenses (12) and 2 loop lenses (6), and Choyce lenses (6) were the most prevalent styles examined.
