Micronutrient status and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection.

This study surveyed serum concentrations of vitamins, electrolytes, and trace elements in subjects seropositive for HIV-1 by ELISA and confi … with large doses. The results suggest that one or more abnormally low concentrations of the plasma micronutrients studied here are likely to be present in the majority of HIV seropositive patients.

Micronutrient deficiencies in the aetiology of anaemia in a rural area in The Gambia.

Early studies in a rural community in The Gambia led to reports of anaemia in certain sections of the population. More recent investigations concerned with identifying micronutrient deficiencies have elaborated these earlier findings. The major determinant of anaemia is an iron deficiency, leading to a microcytic hypochromic haematological picture. However, riboflavin deficiency, which is very widespread, and which leads to clinical signs in some subjects, appears to impose some limitations on absorption and utilization of iron. A subclinical deficiency of ascorbic acid is also observed and th

Micronutrient deficiencies after gastric bypass for morbid obesity.

Gastric stapling for morbid obesity has been popularized, in part, because of an apparent lack of metabolic sequelae. Of our series of prospectively studied gastric bypass patients, 74 patients have been followed for more than 1 year. Anemia developed in more than one-third of the patients. Nearly two-thirds of the patients developed decreased levels of vitamin B12, and other abnormalities were commonly seen (folate, 38%; iron, 49%; potassium, 56%). While prompt recognition and treatment has prevented development of a clinical deficiency syndrome in most patients, 12 per cent became anemic mos

Micronutrients in immune ageing and diabetic wound healing: modulating inflammation and promoting tissue repair.

Immune ageing, characterized by a decline in immune function and increased chronic inflammation, significantly impacts tissue repair mechanisms, particularly in diabetic wounds. Diabetic individuals often experience delayed wound healing due to impaired immune responses and persistent inflammation, making effective management of chronic wounds a challenge. Recent studies suggest that micronutrients, which play an essential role in modulating immune responses and inflammatory pathways, have the potential to mitigate these age-related dysfunctions and improve wound healing outcomes. This review …

Circulating micronutrients as protective factors for the retinal structure and vasculature: Mendelian randomization analyses.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological data and clinical trials have suggested that micronutrients may preserve retinal integrity by mitigating neurodegenerative alterations and microvascular damage. To strengthen the genetic evidence, we investigated the causal effects of various circulating micronutrients (CMs) on retinal imaging parameters using Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses. METHODS: Two-sample MR analyses utilized genetic variants as instrumental variables to investigate the effects of 14 CMs on retinal structural parameters including ganglion cell inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, o…

Causal Effects of Circulating Micronutrients on Cognitive Function: Evidence From a Mendelian Randomization Study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment is a growing concern worldwide, driven by an aging population. Emerging evidence suggests that micronutrients may play critical roles in maintaining cognitive health and preventing neurodegeneration. However, the causal relationships between specific micronutrients and cognitive function remain unclear. METHODS: This study employed a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to investigate the causal effects of 16 circulating micronutrients on cognitive function. Genetic variants associated with micronutrient levels were used as instrumental variables (…

Causal Associations of Circulating Micronutrients With the Risk of Infertility: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Infertility impacts 48 million couples globally, and accumulating evidence suggests that micronutrients potentially influence reproductive health. This Mendelian randomization study investigates causal relationships between 15 micronutrients and infertility in both males and females, aiming to complement existing nutritional epidemiology insights. Genetic association estimates for micronutrient biomarkers (including selenium, iron, β-carotene, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, folate, vitamins B6, B12, C, D, zinc, copper, iodine, and manganese) and infertility phenotypes were derived from Europe…

Micronutrients and socio-demographic factors were major predictors of anaemia among the Ethiopian population.

Anaemia is characterised by low hemoglobin (Hb) concentration. Despite being a public health concern in Ethiopia, the role of micronutrients and non-nutritional factors as a determinant of Hb concentrations has been inadequately explored. This study focused on the assessment of serum micronutrient and Hb concentrations and a range of non-nutritional factors, to evaluate their associations with the risk of anaemia among the Ethiopian population (n 2046). It also explored the mediation effect of Zn on the relation between se and Hb. Bivariate and multivariate regression analyses were performed t…

The role of micronutrients in the management of COIVD-19 and optimizing vaccine efficacy.

Since COVID-19 was declared as a pandemic, a race between researchers has begun to deeply examine the mechanism of the virus and how to combat it. Few clinical investigations and studies have paid attention to the role of micronutrients in the disease's course and how it may affect the disease outcomes. Micronutrients have a noticeable effect on the host immune system regulation, as well as micronutrients insufficiencies where they can affect the host immune response against SARS-CoV-2 by, for example, altering the production and the function of the inflammatory cytokines such as IFN-γ, IFN-α,…

Biomarkers of Micronutrients in Regular Follow-Up for Tyrosinemia Type 1 and Phenylketonuria Patients.

Phenylketonuria (PKU) is treated with dietary restrictions and sometimes tetrahydrobiopterin (BH4). PKU patients are at risk for developing micronutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin B12 and folic acid, likely due to their diet. Tyrosinemia type 1 (TT1) is similar to PKU in both pathogenesis and treatment. TT1 patients follow a similar diet, but nutritional deficiencies have not been investigated yet. In this retrospective study, biomarkers of micronutrients in TT1 and PKU patients were investigated and outcomes were correlated to dietary intake and anthropometric measurements from regular fo…

Alteration of circulating micronutrients with overt and occult infections in anaemic Guatemalan preschool children.

Clinical and laboratory data to define conditions of apparent health, localised infection or inapparent infection were available for 74 anaemic Guatemalan preschool children in the baseline phase of a clinical trial of the effect of iron and vitamin A on haematological status to be correlated with serum levels of four circulating micronutrients--iron, zinc, copper and retinol--known to be influenced by activation of the acute-phase reaction. Upon enrolment, only 29.7% of the children were free of all evidence of infection, 36.5% had one or more localised conditions detected on clinical examina…

Will climate change affect nutrient, micronutrient and bioactive bioavailability?

Climate change is projected to profoundly affect global food systems, directly altering food availability and composition and, as a result, nutritional outcomes. Modifications to the composition and properties of food matrices may, in turn, influence the digestion, absorption, and metabolism of food compounds. This can lead to changes in the bioavailability of macronutrients, micronutrients, and bioactive compounds. Additionally, strategies implemented to mitigate climate change, such as transitioning to green food processing methods or modifying diets, may also affect the content and bioavail…
