Ultrasound Microvessel Imaging of the Human Placenta Demonstrates Altered Vessel Densities in Fetal Growth Restriction With Vascular and Immune Pathologies: A Pilot Case-Control Study.

OBJECTIVES: Fetal growth restriction (FGR) is commonly associated with placental dysfunction, increasing perinatal morbidity and mortality. Visualizing placental vessels in utero would be advantageous for identifying functional FGR cause and determining proper management strategies. We aimed to utilize high-sensitivity ultrasound microvessel imaging (HUMI) for quantifying placental vessel density (VD) in pregnancies diagnosed with FGR. METHODS: This pilot case-control study enrolled subjects in the third trimester with a diagnosis of FGR (n = 40) and gestational age-matched controls with norm

Brain Perivascular Space Morphometry Reflects Shared Familial Microvascular Architecture and Neuropsychiatric Influences.

BACKGROUND: Brain perivascular spaces (PVS) are emerging magnetic resonance imaging markers of microvascular function and waste metabolite clearance. Although PVS enlargement has been linked to aging and vascular risk, it remains unclear whether PVS morphometry reflects shared familial microvascular characteristics and how these are shaped by individual vascular, physiological, and neuropsychiatric factors. We investigated whether PVS morphometry captures these familial characteristics in addition to individual determinants. METHODS: We analyzed 1183 participants from the Stratifying Depressi

Effect of COVID-19 on Retinal and Choroidal Microvasculature in the Pediatric Population: A Literature Review.

Backgroundand Objectives: Retinal microcirculation may serve as a surrogate marker of systemic vascular status and can be non-invasively assessed using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA). Emerging evidence suggests that retinal and choroidal microvascular alterations may occur following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), potentially reflecting systemic vascular and inflammatory processes. This review summarizes the current evidence regarding retinal and choroidal microvascular changes detected by OCTA in pediatric patient

The unusual properties of effective blood substitutes.

Blood substitutes or oxygen carrying plasma expanders were originally formulated to simulate the transport properties of blood, particularly oxygen carrying capacity, viscosity, p50, and colloid osmotic pressure, under the hypothesis that blood is the most desirable fluid in volume restitution. However, changes introduced into the organism during hemorrhage adversely affect microvascular function due to reflex vasoconstriction which causes the fall of functional capillary density, and lowers tissue oxygenation, conditions that are not universally reversed with retransfusion of blood. The resto

Glucose intolerance and impaired insulin secretion in pancreas-specific signal transducer and activator of transcription-3 knockout mice are associated with microvascular alterations in the pancreas.

Maintenance of glucose homeostasis depends on adequate amount and precise pattern of insulin secretion, which is determined by both beta-cel … intolerance and impaired insulin secretion in vivo but normal insulin secretion in isolated islets. Microvascular density in the pancreas was reduced in p-KO mice, along with decreased expression of VEGF-A, but not other vasotropic factors in islets in the absence of pancreatic STAT3 signaling. Together, our study suggests that pancreatic STAT3 signaling is required fo …
