A 2009 deployment of military units from several Saudi Arabian provinces to Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia, enabled us to evaluate exposure to Alkhurma, Crimean-Congo, dengue, and Rift Valley hemorrhagic fever viruses. Seroprevalence to all viruses was low; however, Alkhurma virus seroprevalence was higher (1.3%) and less geographically restricted than previously thought.

INTRODUCTION: In recent years, there has been increased recognition and awareness surrounding mental health among US military personnel. However, the prevalence of postpartum depression (PPD) among female service members is significantly higher than that of the general US population. There is currently a gap in the literature characterizing the unique factors of the military experience accounting for the higher predisposition to PPD relative to civilian Americans. This qualitative review aims to address this gap by isolating risk factors which have been consistently identified in the available

Street medicine's mobile, patient-centered model reflects long-standing military doctrine rather than contemporary invention. Drawing parallels with Korean War MASH units, this column examines shared principles of forward deployment, adaptability, and care under constraint, emphasizing their relevance to unhoused populations and veterans for whom proximity to care determines access and outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in recent military conflicts and deployment-related TBIs are most commonly caused by blast. However, knowledge of risk factors that increase susceptibility to TBI following an acute, high-level blast is limited. We hypothesized that recurrent occupational overpressure exposure (ROPE) may be one factor that increases susceptibility to mild TBI (mTBI) following blast.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using military occupational specialty as a proxy, we examined the effects of high versus low ROPE on mTBI foll

INTRODUCTION: Based on decades of study, researchers have inferred that military service is associated with negative mental health outcomes. Different components of military service, such as deployment, combat, blast, and head injury, have been posited as possible causes. There is additional literature in the sports realm regarding the effect of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) on mental health. Some literature to date supports these suppositions, whereas others disagree. The present study is a secondary analysis of data to add to the understanding of these complex relationships.

PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To gain a better understanding of the complex relationship between combat deployment-related mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCSs), taking into consideration a wide range of potentially mediating and confounding factors.
RESEARCH DESIGN: Cross-sectional.
METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Subjects were 613 U. S. military Veterans and Service Members who served during operations Enduring Freedom, Iraqi Freedom, or New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) and completed a structured interview of mental disorders and a battery of questionnaires. Hierarchical bi

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a pervasive issue within military populations, with approximately 29 % of post-9/11 service members experience PTSD at some point in their lifetime. One potentially important factor in PTSD development and treatment response is dysregulation of the stress response system stemming from exposure to multiple traumas and sustained operational stress associated with military training and deployment. In particular, the end-product of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, cortisol, is of particular interest to researchers examining physiological stress

Recent military operations in Iraq (Operation Iraqi Freedom) and Afghanistan (Operation Enduring Freedom) have led to further refinements of the military medical system's ability to provide advanced surgical care. The deployment of a global trauma care system has directly contributed to improved combat casualty survival rates. As a consequence of improved survivorship, a high-volume patient population of individuals having challenging multiple extremity injuries/amputations has presented to military treatment facilities. These patients present with unique mixed pattern blast injuries. Blast in

OBJECTIVE: To examine the impact of military service on health literacy.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional study.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The validated Brief Health Literacy Screen (BHLS) with military supplement was administered to sequential adult patients (military and civilian) treated at two outpatient academic military otolaryngology clinics between November and December 2019. Inadequate health literacy, defined by a BHLS score ≤9, was the primary outcome measure. Secondary outcome measures included comparisons of inadequate BHLS scores with patient demographics and history of m

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection is prevalent among Chinese military personnel, with regional rates exceeding 40%, and is a well-established risk factor for gastric cancer. Addressing this infection is vital for improving soldiers' health and operational readiness while reducing the long-term healthcare burden. This commentary explores the feasibility and advantages of incorporating traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) into strategies for managing and preventing H. pylori infections within the military. TCM offers a multi-target mechanism that not only combats bacterial infections but a

The stigma that military personnel feel toward mental illness and mental healthcare hinders their access to mental health services. Stigma is influenced by culture-specifically, that held by military personnel is closely related to military culture. To our knowledge, this is the first large-scale investigation aimed at identifying the factors, including demographic factors and elements of military culture, related to stigma among members of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. An anonymous questionnaire was administered to 4754 members. The questionnaire included items regarding demographic fa

Moral injury entails functionally impairing moral emotions, beliefs, and behaviors resulting from enacting, experiencing, or witnessing events that transgress deeply held moral beliefs. Moral injury is associated with concerns about disclosure regarding military experiences, such as feeling judged. Yet, little research has documented the extent to which intimate partners know about service members' exposure to potentially morally injurious experiences (PMIEs) and their reactions to this knowledge. The current study is a secondary analysis of data from a sample of 579 couples (1,158 individuals

Military personnel are a unique group of individuals referred to the pulmonary physician for evaluation. Despite accession standards that limit entrance into the military for individuals with various pre-existing lung diseases, the most common disorders found in the general population such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease remain frequently diagnosed. Military personnel generally tend to be a more physically fit population who are required to exercise on a regular basis and as such may have earlier presentations of disease than their civilian counterparts. Exertional dyspnea

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: With the announcement that members of the military who identify as transgender are allowed to serve openly, the need for Department of Defense behavioral health providers to be comfortable in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of this population becomes quickly evident. This population has been seeking care in the community and standards have been developed to help guide decision-making, but a comparable document does not exist for the military population.
RECENT FINDINGS: Previously published papers were written in anticipation of the policy allowing for open service

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this article is to educate military physicians and providers about rare, endemic rheumatic diseases that may be encountered in deployments to the Middle East region, specifically Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF), Behcet's disease (BD), and tumor necrosis factor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS).
METHODS: We found review articles using MDConsult and Ovid.
RESULTS: Suitable articles were employed to describe the characteristics of each disease.
CONCLUSIONS: Although these diseases are considered rare, they can be endemic to current areas of deployment. Awarene

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is one of numerous skin diseases that occur in British military personnel on deployments to the tropics and sub-tropics. It is typically managed by military primary healthcare services, but diagnostic uncertainty or unavailability of anti-helminthic medication may prompt referral to UK Role 4 healthcare services. Cases of CLM seen at the UK Role 4 Military Infectious Diseases & Tropical Medicine Service from 2005 to 2020 were identified and their case notes were reviewed to identify learning and discussion points. There were 12 cases identified, of which five came

OBJECTIVE: Childhood maltreatment is an increasingly established predictor of psychological problems. However, limited research addresses pathways though which childhood maltreatment influences the mental health of military personnel following deployment. The current study investigated the direct, and indirect through emotional numbing, relations between childhood maltreatment and psychological distress of recently deployed veterans.
METHOD: For a sample of 131 predominantly White, male Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom members of U.S. Army National Guard and Reserve units, a

OBJECTIVE: Several studies have demonstrated robust protective effects of childhood family support and cohesiveness on adult stress-related psychopathology. However, there is little evidence regarding the prospective relationship between the perceived childhood family environment and the in-theater emergence of war-zone stress-related psychological symptoms. The present report is from data collected from the Texas Combat PTSD Risk Project, which aims to identify risk and resilience factors at predeployment that predict the subsequent impact of war-zone stressors in terms of psychological sympt

BACKGROUND: Evaluating the incidence of inflicted traumatic brain injuries (inflicted TBI) in young children, and encompassing shaken baby syndrome (SBS) and related injuries, is an epidemiologic challenge. Data available regarding military families in the U.S. may complement other national surveillance efforts.
METHODS: A protocol was developed to assess the epidemiology of inflicted TBI among infants of U.S. military families, integrating data from the Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Registry, healthcare utilization databases, child abuse reporting systems, and military person
