The evolution of mosquito baiting: from chemical and electronic methods toward AI.

The spread of mosquito-borne diseases is accelerating owing to several factors, including human-made ones. In response, scientists are developing various types of baits, including organic, chemical, and electronic, to lure mosquitoes and monitor, control, and kill them. These baits function by replicating stimuli that attract mosquitoes, including human breath, body heat, color, and mosquito wingbeat sounds. Wingbeat sound baits generated from the wings of female mosquitoes are particularly effective in attracting males. Carbon dioxide is a potent attractant and the closest human mimic among t

Wolbachia-Based Biocontrol of Aedes aegypti: Current Progress, Challenges, and Future Prospects.

Wolbachia is used as a potential biocontrol tool to reduce dengue mosquitoes and also to reduce dengue virus (DENV) load in transinfected Aedes aegypti. Different field trials including the ones by the World Mosquito Program (WMP) have deployed Wolbachia carrying DENV primary vectors at different target sites worldwide. Field trials suggest that through the Population Replacement Strategy (PRS) and Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT), Wolbachia can either introgress into the local Ae. aegypti population or reduce their population size by cytoplasmic incompatibility, leading to subsequent reduc

Biodegradable floating hydrogel baits as larvicide delivery systems against mosquitoes.

Biological methods for mosquito larvae control are completely biodegradable and have null or limited effects on nontarget organisms. However, commercially available products have a low residual activity, with the consequent need for multiple applications that inevitably increase costs and the risk of resistance phenomena insurgence. Smart delivery systems made of hydrogels proved their efficacy in increasing the action duration of biolarvicides up to several months, but the lack of an efficient baiting mechanism to strongly attract the target pest remains a problem in practical applications. Converting endogenous genes of the malaria mosquito into simple non-autonomous gene drives for population replacement.

Gene drives for mosquito population replacement are promising tools for malaria control. However, there is currently no clear pathway for safely testing such tools in endemic countries. The lack of well-characterized promoters for infection-relevant tissues and regulatory hurdles are further obstacles for their design and use. Here we explore how minimal genetic modifications of endogenous mosquito genes can convert them directly into non-autonomous gene drives without disrupting their expression. We co-opted the native regulatory sequences of three midgut-specific loci of the malaria vector A

A cluster-randomized, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of a spatial repellent (Mosquito Shield™) against Aedes-borne virus infection among children ≥ 4-16 years of age in the Gampaha District, Sri Lanka: study protocol (the AEGIS program).

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents (SRs) have been widely used for prevention of mosquito bites, but their efficacy in reducing Aedes-borne viruses (ABV) has not been tested rigorously at large scale in Asia. To address this knowledge gap, a trial to evaluate the efficacy of Mosquito Shield™, a transfluthrin SR, was developed in Gampaha District of Sri Lanka across three Medical Officer of Health areas; i.e., Negombo, Wattala, and Kelaniya. METHODS: This trial is a cluster-randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded clinical trial. A total of ~14,430 subjects aged ≥ 6 months in 30 clusters (15

A Review of the Biology, Ecology, and Surveillance of Aedes aegypti in Puerto Rico.

Dengue has long been a major public health problem in Puerto Rico, and the emergence of chikungunya and Zika has added to this burden. These arthropod-borne viruses are transmitted primarily by the domestic mosquito Aedes aegypti. This review synthesizes peer-reviewed studies published from 1974 through 2024 on Ae. aegypti biology, ecology, and surveillance that were conducted in Puerto Rico or that used mosquitoes collected in Puerto Rico. References were identified through PubMed and Google Scholar and supplemented by the author's curated collection. Collectively, the literature shows that p

Development and effectiveness test of an internet-based real-time monitoring device for malaria parasite vector mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a major global health threat, and effective vector surveillance is essential for timely vector control. However, surveillance systems are challenged by behavioral shifts in Anopheles mosquitoes, labor-intensive procedures, and delays in real-time data transmission. Existing electronic monitoring tools often suffer from low sensitivity and specificity, creating an urgent need for automated, high-precision alternatives. METHODS: We developed the "Black Box," a 3D-printed, internet-enabled device integrating multispectral light, thermal simulation, chemical attractant

Social and behavioural considerations for responding to Anopheles stephensi in Africa: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Anopheles stephensi has been identified in multiple African countries over the past decade. Unlike malaria vectors endemic to Africa, invasive An. stephensi shares characteristics with Aedes aegypti, including laying eggs in artificial containers near human dwellings, particularly in urban areas. These characteristics pose a threat to malaria control and elimination and shape needed interventions, including the role of individuals, households, and communities. Due to the urgency to develop strategies for the African context, this scoping review sought to identify social and behavio

Biodiversity of malaria ecosystems, challenges for control: When human diversity is forgotten.

Malaria has been affecting human beings since ever through a great biodiversity of transmission contexts, and only recently this vector-borne parasitic disease was controlled and eliminated due to the progress in the knowledge of the pathogens, the mosquito vectors and the transmission cycles, but also technological advances in diagnostic, prevention and control tools targeting both the parasite and the vector. Within the past 150 years malaria was eliminated from all temperate countries of the northern hemisphere, and this success triggered the belief that human malaria could be eradicated wi

Novo plant-based mosquito repellent shows promise for exclusion of Aedes mosquitoes from "window" entry.

Mosquitoes threaten over half of the world's population through vectored diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever, dengue, and chikungunya. Mosquitoes have a highly developed olfactory system attuned to chemotaxis relating to host-seeking, mating, and oviposition behavior. In this study, we aimed to determine the spatial efficacy of 2 plant-based repellent blends (Blend3 and Blend4 that had previously been found to successfully repel Aedes, Anopheles and Culex mosquitoes in wind tunnel assays) in excluding Aedes aegypti from the window entry. A new cage system was developed for parallel "n

Effect of different lining paper materials and infusions on oviposition preference of Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) gravid mosquitoes.

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) mosquito is a vector responsible for increasing global public health concerns due to its rapid geographical spread and increasing vectorial capacity. Understanding the breeding behavior of Ae. aegypti is crucial to control this vector and thereby limiting the spread of diseases. To study this mosquito breeding in the laboratories and ovitraps, different types of lining-papers, surrounding inner surface of a container along with different types of added infusions, are used. Lining-papers serve as surfaces for oviposition and infusions provide the essential environment f

Applicability of the Mexican ovitrap system for Aedes vector surveillance in Colombia.

Ovitraps can detect Aedes vectors at an early stage and can serve as an alarm indicator for outbreak prediction. This study aimed to summarize the available literature about the ovitrap system and to determine its feasibility, required resources and costs when installing and maintaining this vector surveillance system in the municipality of Los Patios, Colombia. A scoping review to assess the role of ovitraps as a tool for Aedes vector surveillance was conducted. The subsequent fieldwork consisted of mapping the municipality, manufacturing, and installing 40 ovitraps in 10 blocks, revising the

Impact of cattle on the abundance of indoor and outdoor resting malaria vectors in southern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the blood feeding preferences and resting habits of malaria vectors is important for assessing and designing effective malaria vector control tools. The presence of livestock, such as cattle, which are used as blood meal hosts by some malaria vectors, may impact malaria parasite transmission dynamics. The presence of livestock may provide sufficient blood meals for the vectors, thereby reducing the frequency of vectors biting humans. Alternatively, the presence of cattle may enhance the availability of blood meals such that infectious mosquitoes may survive longer, th

Double BR-OVT: a new trap model for collecting eggs and adult mosquitoes from Culex quinquefasciatus and Aedes spp.

The circulation of arboviruses throughout the world and the maintenance of lymphatic filariasis endemicity in tropical countries, combined with the lack of vaccines and specific treatments, highlight the importance of reducing the populations of mosquitoes involved in the transmission of these pathogens, Aedes aegypti and Culex quinquefasciatus. To contribute to the development of new strategies for monitoring and controlling these culicids, we evaluated the performance of the Double BR-OVT trap individually and in pairs, in the field. After 18 months, the Double BR-OVT traps captured a mean o

Genetic control strategies for population suppression in the Anopheles gambiae complex: a review of current technologies.

Malaria continues to pose a critical public health threat, with mosquitoes from the Anopheles gambiae complex acting as the main vectors of the disease in sub-Saharan Africa, where approximately 95% of malaria-related deaths occur. Despite significant advancements in vector control, such as insecticide-treated bed nets and indoor spraying, the effectiveness of these interventions is increasingly compromised by various challenges, including rising levels of insecticide and pathogen resistance, mosquito behavioural adaptations, and persistent funding gaps. In this context, genetic vector control

A review of selective indoor residual spraying for malaria control.

BACKGROUND: Indoor residual spraying (IRS) is one of the most effective malaria control tools. However, its application has become limited to specific contexts due to the increased costs of IRS products and implementation programmes. Selective spraying-selective spray targeted to particular areas/surfaces of dwellings-has been proposed to maintain the malaria control and resistance-management benefits of IRS while decreasing the costs of the intervention. METHODS: A literature search was conducted to find (1) studies that assessed the resting behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes and (2) studies
