Study protocol for a randomized controlled trial on the effect of the Diabetic Foot Guidance System (SOPeD) for the prevention and treatment of foot musculoskeletal dysfunctions in people with diabetic neuropathy: the FOotCAre (FOCA) trial I.

BACKGROUND: This study is part of a series of two clinical trials. Taking into account the various musculoskeletal alterations of the foot and ankle in people with diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) and the need for self-care to avoid more serious dysfunctions and complications, a self-manageable exercise protocol that focuses on strengthening the foot muscles is presented as a potentially effective preventive method for foot and gait complications. The aim of this trial is to investigate the effect of a customized rehabilitation technology, the Diabetic Foot Guidance System (SOPeD), on DPN

From Picture Archiving and Communication System to AI production: development of a preprocessing pipeline for musculoskeletal radiological images from real-world data sources : results from the AI to Revolutionize the patient Care pathway in Hip and knEe aRthroplastY (ARCHERY) project.

AIMS: Computer vision, automated interpretation of radiological images using AI algorithms, has seen considerable recent interest in the domain of musculoskeletal disease. The use of routinely collected healthcare data provides a significant potential source of information but is often complex and disorganized. We therefore set out to develop an AI-driven preprocessing pipeline for radiological hip and knee images taken from a regional NHS Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) system. METHODS: De-identified Scottish regional imaging data was ingested and stored in a specialist pla

MSKI reduction strategies: evidence-based interventions to reduce musculoskeletal injuries in military service members.

Musculoskeletal injuries (MSKI) are one of the biggest challenges for military services globally, contributing to substantial financial burdens and lost training and working days. Effective evidence-based intervention strategies are essential to reduce MSKI incidence, and research has shown the positive effect of both nutritional interventions and physical training (PT) interventions on reducing MSKI incidence. Levels of vitamin D metabolites have been associated with MSKI and bone stress fracture risk, while calcium and vitamin D supplementation has been shown to reduce the incidence of stres

Braces and Splints for Common Musculoskeletal Conditions.

Braces and splints can immobilize and protect joints, reduce pain, decrease swelling, and facilitate healing of acute injuries. They are also used for injury prevention and chronic pain reduction, and to alter the function of a joint. The medial unloading (valgus) knee brace is an option for patients with medial knee osteoarthritis, but evidence of long-term benefit is limited. The patellar stabilizing brace helps maintain proper patellar alignment but has mixed results in treating patellofemoral pain syndrome. The patellar tendon strap is effective in treating pain from patellar tendinopathy.

Charting Variant Vascular Pathways in Musculoskeletal Imaging: Clinical and Surgical Implications.

Variant vascular pathways often present a challenge to a radiologist interpreting routine musculoskeletal imaging studies. In this article, the authors focus on the prevalence, anatomic landmarks for both normal and variant anatomy, clinical significance of the aberrant vasculature and anatomic associations, and potential risks of surgical complications. In the upper extremity, the persistent median artery and high division of the radial artery, known as the brachioradial artery, threaten median neuropathy or upper extremity ischemia. Pelvic trauma cases should be scrutinized for corona mortis

Ergonomics to perform thoracic limb musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Ergonomics is the science that studies how to adapt the relationship between the human being with its environment. Performing musculoskeletal ultrasound applying appropriate ergonomic techniques both in the patient and by the sonographer, can reduce bodily injuries that are usually generated in repetitive work like this, causing a detriment to the quality of life. The objective of this pictorial is to depict some of the ergonomic characteristics necessary in this work environment by reviewing the literature related to the objective of this work. We conclude that carrying out ergonomic measures

Appropriate Use Criteria in Musculoskeletal Imaging.

In the United States, health care costs are spiraling upward at an unsustainable rate. Concurrently, medical specialties, legislatures, and the population each recognize the need to prove that current medical practices are effective, measured by outcomes. These forces necessitate a change in radiology's role, from emphasizing interpretation and reporting to maintaining and demonstrating quality and value. An important part of this task involves establishing the appropriateness of imaging tests by application of objective data and expert opinion in an effort to optimize resource utilization and

Musculoskeletal ultrasonography in physical and rehabilitation medicine.

Musculoskeletal ultrasound has gained a significant place in the diagnosis and management of various musculoskeletal disorders due to its several advantages (being convenient, inexpensive, non-invasive, repeatable, providing dynamic imaging and not requiring any exposure to radiation). It has also become a valuable tool in the daily clinical practice of physical and rehabilitation medicine physicians; the musculoskeletal ultrasound probe having become synonymous with the physician's stethoscope. In this paper, aside from drawing attention to this growing issue in the agenda of PRM physicians,
