Umbilical myiasis in a healthy newborn.

A rare case of umbilical myiasis in a healthy newborn caused by Musca domestica is presented. Poor umbilical hygiene provides an ideal site for egg-laying by the common housefly.

[A case of traumatic myiasis in a dog].

A male Rottweiler dog was brought to the Adnan Menderes University Faculty of Veterinary Clinics with the complaint of injury. On examination, on the right rear side of the dog, Myiasis larvae were found. Twenty-seven were collected and larval mouth parts and posterior stigmas were dissected. Upon microscopic examination, the larvae of the dog were identified as third stage Lucilia spp. In the region where larvea were located, erythema, edema, and petechial hemorrhages were observed as pathological disorders.

Oral myiasis in a captive hippopotamus.

Causes of dental infections can be related to failed dental eruption, malocclusion, abrasion, fractures with or without exposure of the dental pulp, and periodontal disease. Reports of oral myiasis in megavertebrates in captivity are infrequent, perhaps due to the difficulty in observing the oral cavity in such species. This report describes a case of oral myiasis in an adult male hippopotamus in the gingival area and alveolar mucosa of the left mandibular canine tooth.

Umbilical myiasis in a healthy adult.

Myiasis occurs mainly on exposed skin-typically on the face, scalp, arms or legs. What may be the first recorded case of umbilical myiasis in a healthy adult is herein presented. The underlying entomology is briefly discussed to explain the clinical presentation.

Umbilical myiasis in a human newborn.

OBJECTIVE: Obesity conveys a risk for RA development, while paradoxically, associating with less radiographic progression after RA diagnosis. Using MRI we can study this surprising association in detail from MRI-detected synovitis and osteitis to MRI-detected erosive progression, which precedes radiographic progression. Previous research suggested obesity associates with less osteitis and synovitis. We therefore aimed to (i) validate the previously suggested association between BMI and MRI-detected osteitis/synovitis; (ii) study whether this is specific for ACPA-positive or ACPA-negative RA or

A case of auricular myiasis in Malaysia.

Many cases of myiasis have been reported in Malaysia. This is the second reported case of auricular myiasis caused by Chrysomya bezziana. The patient was a 41-year-old, mentally retarded, Orang Asli man. He was brought to the clinic by his mother with a complaint of pain and bleeding in his right ear for 3 days. On examination, blood and multiple maggots were seen packed in the external auditory canal of the right ear. A total of 39 live maggots were removed and maintained until they developed into 3rd instar larvae, which were later processed and identified as Chrysomya bezziana. The patient …

The evolution of myiasis in blowflies (Calliphoridae).

Blowflies (Calliphoridae) are characterised by the ability of their larvae to develop in animal flesh. Where the host is a living vertebrate, such parasitism by dipterous larvae is known as myiasis. However, the evolutionary origins of the myiasis habit in the Calliphoridae, a family which includes the blowflies and screwworm flies, remain unclear. Species associated with an ectoparasitic lifestyle can be divided generally into three groups based on their larval feeding habits: saprophagy, facultative ectoparasitism, and obligate parasitism, and it has been proposed that this functional divisi…

Traumatic myiasis of geese in Hungary.

Five geese flocks were surveyed to gather data on the prevalence and clinical manifestation of traumatic myiasis and the fly species involved. Myiasis was recorded in all the flocks and the total number of infested geese was 26 (ca. 0.1% of the total numbers). The first cases were observed at the end of May, the last ones in August. Most birds (16/26) were infested in August. Each affected goose had only one lesion, which was located more frequently on the wings (14/26) than on any other body. In seven geese, Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae) was the only myiasis-causing species. …

[Myiasis in female travelers to the tropics].

Myiasis is a rare disease in Europe and the USA; it is defined by the development of parasitic, mostly tropical maggots in the human body. They are best identified by the pattern of their terminal spiracles and the shape of their stigmal plates. In spite of the size of the larvae of Cordylobia anthropophaga, there is only low-grade inflammation; the clinical course is benign.

Myiasis in children: the Indian perspective.

A retrospective analysis of 94 cases of childhood myiasis admitted over a 6-year period is presented. Children formed 37.9% of all cases of myiasis. More than 50% of the children were less than 5 years of age and most (96.8%) belonged to a rural background. Of the 94 cases, 81 (86.16%) were of aural, 11 (11.7%) of nasal and 2 (2.12%) of ocular myiasis. The peak incidence was seen from September to October. The main symptoms in aural myiasis were passage of worms (81.48%), discharge (44.44%) and pain (41.97%). In nasal myiasis epistaxis (100%), foul smell (100%) passage of worms (90.9%) and pai…

A case of intestinal myiasis in Japan.

A case of intestinal myiasis caused by larvae of Sarcophaga peregrina (Japanese name: senchi-nikubae) is reported. The patient passed stools containing live fly larvae for 2 days, but was otherwise asymptomatic. The patient seems to have been infested accidentally as a result of having eaten "yakitori" in which the fly had deposited its larvae. This paper is the first report of intestinal myiasis caused by the 3rd instar of this species.
