Medical therapy of maxillary sinus inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) in the maxillary sinus is a diagnostic challenge. As IMT has various names, it has various findings in magnetic resonance image. Although destructive pattern in computed tomography and hypermetabolism in PET CT suggest malignancy, it is debatable whether it is a tumor or inflammatory lesion. Treatment of IMT usually includes surgery. However, IMT can be dealt with medical treatment according to histologic type and localization. We report a rare case of IMT in the maxillary sinus which is controlled by medical therapy.

A diagnostic dilemma in a case of pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour.

An 18-year-old man presented to the local hospital in Malta, with dyspnoea, cough, mild haemoptysis, chest pain and night sweats. CT revealed a right hilar mass. Pleural tap, bronchoscopy and open lung biopsy were inconclusive. Biopsies obtained at repeat bronchoscopy and endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) revealed a likely diagnosis of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumour (IMT). The patient subsequently underwent right pneumonectomy, and histology revealed the presence of two further nodules apart from the main tumour. Follow-up with positron emission tomography (PET)/CT showed the development of

Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumor of the Heart in the Infant: Review of the Literature.

Primary heart tumors are extremely rare, constituting approximately 0.02% of all malignancies. Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) constitutes <5% of primary heart tumors. Until now, IMT of the heart has been described in 21 infants below 1 year of age. Its etiology remains unknown. IMT usually develops within the right atrial and ventricular endocardium. The main clinical symptoms reported in the affected infants involved increasing respiratory failure, cyanosis, and heart murmurs. Histopathologically, IMT is characterized by the myofibroblast proliferation with inflammatory infiltrates

Immunohistochemical evaluation of myofibroblast density in odontogenic cysts and tumors.

Background. The aim of this study was to investigate myofibroblast (MF) density in a broad spectrum of odontogenic cysts and tumors and the relation between the density of MFs and the clinical behavior of these lesions. Methods. A total of 105 cases of odontogenic lesions, including unicystic ameloblastoma (UAM), solid ameloblastoma (SA), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), dentigerous cyst (DC), radicular cyst (RC) (15 for each category), and odontogenic myxoma (OM), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT), calcifying odontogenic cyst (COC) (10 for each category), were immunohistochemically stained wit

Sinonasal inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma).

Inflammatory myofibroblastic pseudotumor (plasma cell granuloma) is a soft tissue lesion consisting of myofibroblasts, mature lymphocytes, histiocytes, plasma cells, eosinophils, and extracellular collagen. Various sites in the body may harbor these lesions. Lungs, omentum, intestines, mesentery, and urinary system are the most susceptible areas. It is usually seen in children and young adults. The lesion is rarely detected in the head and neck region. The orbit and the upper respiratory system are the most common localizations in the head and neck region. Sinonasal tract is a rare site of inv…

High grade myofibroblastic sarcoma of paratesticular soft tissues.

Tumors of the paratesticular region most often arise from the soft tissue surrounding the spermatic cord and the epididymis or from the soft tissue (dartos muscle) of the scrotal wall. Paratesticular tumors, despite their rarity, present a high incidence of malignancy (30%), and the therapeutic approach of choice is surgical resection with negative margin. The grade, the histology type, the presence of metastases during the diagnosis, the size of the tumor, the age of the patients, and the surgical margins are all important prognostic factors. We present a case report of a 86-year-old patient

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors of the urinary bladder: a systematic review.

We systemically reviewed the literature on inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) of the urinary bladder and compared between anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive and ALK-negative IMTs. An extensive search of the literature was performed in Medline and Web of Science using the following terms: "inflammatory myofibrolastic tumor," "inflammatory pseudotumor," and "bladder." A manual search was also performed using the web-based search engine Google Scholar. Reference lists of the retrieved articles were reviewed for other relevant studies. Patients' and disease characteristics of each i

A novel ALK rearrangement in an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a neonate.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are uncommon lesions primarily affecting children and young adults. They have rarely been described in infants, with a very small number described in neonates. Structural rearrangements in the anaplastic large-cell lymphoma kinase gene (ALK) has contributed to our categorizing this lesion as a neoplasm. In addition, rearrangements of the ALK gene have been implicated in the pathogenicity of many other hematolymphoid and non-hematolymphoid tumors, typically involving 2p23 with different partners or with pericentric inversion. We report a previously und

Corneal myofibroblast biology and pathobiology: generation, persistence, and transparency.

Important advances have led to a better understanding of the biology and pathobiology of corneal myofibroblasts and their generation after surgery, injury, infection and disease. Transforming growth factor (TGF) beta, along with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and interleukin (IL)-1, has been shown to regulate myofibroblast development and death in in-vitro and in-situ animal models. The myofibroblast precursor cells regulated by these cytokines include both keratocyte-derived and bone marrow-derived cells. Cytokines that promote and maintain myofibroblasts associated with late haze afte…

Aclidinium inhibits human lung fibroblast to myofibroblast transition.

BACKGROUND: Fibroblast to myofibroblast transition is believed to contribute to airway remodelling in lung diseases such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This study examines the role of aclidinium, a new long-acting muscarinic antagonist, on human fibroblast to myofibroblast transition. METHODS: Human bronchial fibroblasts were stimulated with carbachol (10(-8) to 10(-5) M) or transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1; 2 ng/ml) in the presence or absence of aclidinium (10(-9) to 10(-7) M) or different drug modulators for 48 h. Characterisation of myofibroblasts was performed b…

Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor invading the gastroesophageal junction.

Pulmonary inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors are rare neoplasms of intermediate malignant potential. Most patients are asymptomatic and present with incidental findings on imaging. Dysphagia due to direct invasion into the esophagus is an extremely rare presentation of this uncommon tumor. The diagnosis is difficult to make preoperatively. Complete surgical resection offers the best chance of cure. We describe a 27-year-old man who presented with progressive dysphagia and the diagnosis was only revealed after en bloc resection of the esophagus, cardia, and left lower lobe.

[Role of myofibroblast in inflammatory bowel disease and tumor genesis].

Stroma cells with the microenvironment around them have primary role in the regulation of inflammation processes, conformation of tumors and development of metastasis. Myofibroblasts have essential role in inflammation processes and in the regeneration of encompassed tissue. Molecules produced by them operate the cells of the immune system and effect the proliferation of epithelium. Tumors can activate myofibroblasts which can lead to uncontrolled epithelium proliferation across production of changed and increased regulation ligands (such as cytokines, chemokines, chemotactic and other growth …

Myofibroblast distribution in Dupuytren's cords: correlation with digital contracture.

PURPOSE: Dupuytren's tissue has typically been described as being composed of myofibroblast-rich palmar nodules and relatively acellular tendon-like cords. We aimed to determine myofibroblast distribution (alpha-smooth muscle actin [alpha-SMA] positive cells) within Dupuytren's tissue and to correlate histologically defined alpha-SMA-positive nodules with digital contracture and recurrent disease. METHODS: One hundred and three digital Dupuytren's cords (72 fasciectomy, 31 dermofasciectomy) were stained with anti-alpha-SMA antibody. The presence of alpha-SMA-positive nodules, their surface ar

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of spermatic cord in undescended testis.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is an uncommon condition and only a few cases of IMT in the spermatic cord have been reported, with none associated with an undescended testis. We present the case of a man with an undescended left testis who had an IMT involving the spermatic cord. He was treated with surgery and no adjuvant therapy afterward. He was disease free at 2.5 years of follow-up. A brief discussion of the pathologic features and management of the condition is also provided.
