The presenting sign associated with the tumours of the nail unit may involve: the colouration of the nail plate and/or the subungual tissue; the contour of the nail and the volume of the distal phalanx; the integrity of the nail (partial destruction or nail disappearance); abnormalities in the periungual tissues. The key for the early diagnosis of a nail tumour is a high index of suspicion of any non healing or recurrent condition in the area. Non-invasive studies such as X-ray or MRI may be followed by the need of exploratory nail plate removal and adequate biopsy.

Claws and nails belong to the epidermal skin appendages, with nails developing later than claws during primate development. Both have also been depicted in fine arts. Claws can be found in illustrations of the cavemen and the devil. Nails became a subject of painting and sculptures during the Renaissance. We discuss several examples of fine arts from a dermatologic point of view, involving nail afflictions associated with ergotism, lichen planus, trachyonychia, and onychogryphosis.

Green nail syndrome is an infectious nail disorder caused most commonly by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. We report a rare case of peritoneal dialysis (PD) exit site infection (ESI) accompanied by P. aeruginosa-associated green nail syndrome. The patient was treated with oral and topical antibiotics without the need for PD catheter removal. We aim to emphasise the importance of nail assessment for ESI in patients undergoing PD.

Superior pubic rami fractures are commonly associated with a posterior pelvic ring disruption. It has been shown that fixing both the anterior pelvic arch and the posterior ring increases stability and enhances clinical results. Surgical management of femoral shaft fractures with intramedullary nails has become the standard of care, with multiple options for entry point described, including piriformis entry, trochanter entry and retrograde femoral nails. Our present review describes the surgical anatomy of the proximal and distal femur and its relation to different entry points for intramedullary femoral nails.
