CdSe nanoparticle elasticity and surface energy.

The acoustic phonon modes of colloidal CdSe nanoparticles in solution (293 K) are passively measured by a third order ultrafast heterodyne cross-polarized transient grating measurement. Using the observed size-dependence of the acoustic phonon frequency, the elastic properties of the nanoparticles are determined. The size-dependence of the elastic modulus is then used to ascertain information about the relative surface energies of the nanocrystals and suggests the extent and depth of surface reconstruction.

Preparation and Characterization of Sn Micro- and Nanoparticles.

This study investigates the preparation and characterization of tin micro- and nanoparticles with an emphasis on phase-transformation-induced particle formation and chemical purity. Microparticles were generated through repeated phase transformations between β-Sn (white tin) and α-Sn (gray tin), exploiting the associated volumetric changes to induce fragmentation and particle size reduction. The evolution of particle size distribution was systematically analyzed as a function of transformation cycles. The data were analyzed using the modified Johnson-Mehl-Avrami-Kolmogorov equation, and the sa

Nanoparticle vaccine formulations for dengue virus.

Dengue virus (DENV) is one of the most prevalent mosquito-borne pathogens, with almost half of the global population at risk of infection. While most cases are mild, severe illness and even death is not uncommon. There are currently a lack of available antivirals and highly effective prophylactic vaccines available for DENV, leading to a significant gap in protection. While live-attenuated vaccines have been developed and briefly utilized, some have been found to increase the risk for developing antibody-dependent enhancement (ADE), a phenomenon that can worsen outcomes in those who are expose

Decoding nanoscale electrochemistry with nanoparticle impacts.

Nano-impact electrochemistry (NIE) probes electrochemical function one nanoparticle at a time. Freely diffusing particles stochastically collide with an ultramicroelectrode, and each impact produces a current transient that reports single-entity reactivity, transport and transformation. In this review, we place the impact waveform and its data processing at the centre of the discussion and use them as a common language across systems. We describe how chronoamperometric traces are transformed into standardized observables (event counts, peak or step currents, charge, lifetimes, and waiting time

Engineered nanoparticles for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common diseases characterized by neurodegeneration and is becoming a major public health problem worldwide. AD is manifested mainly by progressive impairments in cognition, emotion, language and memory in the elderly population. Many treatment strategies have been explored for decades; however, there is still no effective way to address the root cause of AD pathogenesis, only to target symptoms to improve patient cognitive outcomes. Intracerebral administration is difficult because of the challenges posed by the blood‒brain barrier (BBB). NPs are mat

Phytochemical Nanoparticles for the Treatment of Neurological Disorders.

Neurological disorders impose a significant burden on the healthcare systems. The latest published data by WHO indicated that stroke was the second leading cause of death globally in 2020, with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other dementias in the seventh position. The treatment of neurological disorders is challenging because of the complex nature of the disease, as well as limited accessibility to this target organ due to several biological barriers. There is a wide range of treatment options for neurological disorders. Small drug molecules, antibodies, and stem cells have been employed for th

Targeted nanoparticles for imaging and therapy of endometriosis†.

In this brief review, we discuss our efforts to validate nanoplatforms for imaging and treatment of endometriosis. We specifically highlight our use of nonhuman primates and primate tissues in this effort. Endometriosis is a painful disorder of women and nonhuman primates where endometrium-like tissue exists outside of the uterus. There are no reliable, specific, and noninvasive diagnostic tests for endometriosis. Laparoscopic imaging remains the gold standard for identifying small endometriotic lesions in both women and monkeys. Visualizing and surgically removing microscopic lesions remains

Nanoparticle-neutrophils interactions for autoimmune regulation.

Neutrophils play an essential role as 'first responders' in the immune response, necessitating many immune-modulating capabilities. Chronic, unresolved inflammation is heavily implicated in the progression and tissue-degrading effects of autoimmune disease. Neutrophils modulate disease pathogenesis by interacting with the inflammatory and autoreactive cells through effector functions, including signaling, degranulation, and neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) release. Since the current gold standard systemic glucocorticoid administration has many drawbacks and side effects, targeting neutrop

Methods for Analysis of Nanoparticle Immunosuppressive Properties.

Adverse drug effects on immune system function represent a significant concern in the pharmaceutical industry, because 10-20% of drug withdrawal from the market is attributed to immunotoxicity. Immunosuppression is one such adverse effect. The traditional immune function test used to estimate materials' immunosuppression is T cell dependent antibody response (TDAR). This method involves a 28-day in vivo study evaluating the animal's antibody titer to a known antigen (Keyhole Limpet Hemocyanin; KLH) with and without challenge. Due to the limited quantities of novel drug candidates, an in vitro

Nanoparticle biosensors for cardiovascular disease detection.

Early detection and management of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are crucial for patient survival and long-term health. CVD biomarkers such as cardiac Troponin-I (cTnI), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), Galectin-3 (Gal-3), etc are released into the circulation following heart muscle injury, ie, acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Biosensor technology including the use of nanoparticles can be designed to target specific biomarkers associated with CVD, enabling early detection and more rapid intervention to decrease morbidity and mortality. To date

Advances and Prospects in Topological Nanoparticle Photonics.

Topological nanophotonics is a new avenue for exploring nanoscale systems from visible to THz frequencies, with unprecedented control. By embracing their complexity and fully utilizing the properties that make them distinct from electronic systems, we aim to study new topological phenomena. In this Perspective, we summarize the current state of the field and highlight the use of nanoparticle systems for exploring topological phases beyond electronic analogues. We provide an overview of the tools needed to capture the radiative, retardative, and long-range properties of these systems. We discus

Fullerene nanoparticles for the treatment of ulcerative colitis.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a long-term, recurrent inflammatory bowel disease for which no effective cure is yet available in the clinical setting. Repairing the barrier dysfunction of the colon and reducing intestinal inflammation are considered key objectives to cure UC. Here we demonstrate a novel therapeutic strategy based on a C60 fullerene suspension (C60FS) to treat dinitrobenzene sulfonic acid-induced UC in an animal model. C60FS can repair the barrier dysfunction of UC and effectively promote the healing of ulcers; it also manifests better treatment effects compared with mesalazine ene

Nanoparticle Tracking for Protein Aggregation Research.

Protein aggregates are the pathological agents in several neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease. In the pharmaceutical industry, protein aggregation poses significant challenges to the manufacture of biologics. Nanoparticle tracking is an emerging technology that allows particle-by-particle measurement of aggregate size and concentration. The technique is solution based, and requires no labeling. Here we describe protocols for using nanoparticle tracking in protein aggregation research, and provide a few examples for illustrative purposes.

Nanoparticle vaccines against viral infections.

Despite numerous efforts, we still do not have prophylactic vaccines for many clinically relevant viruses, such as HIV, hepatitis C virus, Zika virus, and respiratory syncytial virus. Several factors have contributed to the current lack of effective vaccines, including the high rate of viral mutation, low immunogenicity of recombinant viral antigens, instability of viral antigenic proteins administered in vivo, sophisticated mechanisms of viral immune evasion, and inefficient induction of mucosal immunity by vaccine models studied to date. Some of these obstacles could be partially overcome by

Translational nanoparticle engineering for cancer vaccines.

Conventional cancer treatments remain insufficient to treat many therapy-resistant tumors.1 Cancer vaccines attempt to overcome this resistance by activating the patient's immune system to eliminate tumor cells without the toxicity of systemic chemotherapy and radiation. Nanoparticles (NPs) are promising as customizable, immunostimulatory carriers to protect and deliver antigen. Although many NP vaccines have been investigated in preclinical settings, a few have advanced into clinical application, and still fewer have demonstrated clinical benefit. This review incorporates observations from NP

The Future of Nanoparticle-Directed Venous Therapy.

Nanoparticles, structures of less than 200 nm capable of delivering pharmacotherapeutics to sites of disease, have shown great promise for the treatment of many disease states. While no nanoparticle therapies for deep vein thrombosis are currently approved by the Food and Drug Administration, many of the unique features of these therapies have the potential to treat both deep vein thrombosis and its most significant sequela, postthrombotic syndrome, while limiting the hemorrhagic complications of current antithrombotic therapies. Nanoparticles are complex structures with several important vari
