Prostate Type Malignancies Arising in Ovarian Teratomas - A Report of Two Patients.

The identification of benign prostatic tissue within ovarian and testicular mature teratomas is an unusual occurrence. While a few documented reports exist in the literature regarding the emergence of benign prostatic tissue within teratomas, the occurrence of prostatic-type adenocarcinoma in a mature ovarian teratoma is an exceptionally rare phenomenon. To date, only two prior reports have documented such instances, and no tumors have been previously reported with prostate-type tissue with morphologically two different malignancies. We outline our experience with two tumors involving prostati

Tumor proliferation in squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva.

Tumor proliferation is of important prognostic significance for several neoplasms. The very few previous studies on this parameter in vulvar carcinoma have shown contradictory results. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic significance of tumor proliferation in vulvar carcinoma. Paraffin-embedded tissue of 74 squamous cell carcinomas of the vulva was immunostained for MIB-1, detecting Ki-67, and analyzed for staining patterns and the percentage of positive cells. There were three general staining patterns: a diffuse distribution (diffuse type), a localized staining at the infil

Neuro-Behçet's disease manifesting as a neoplasm-like lesion--case report.

A 50-year-old man presented with neuro-Behçet's disease (NBD) manifesting as a large neoplasm-like lesion affecting the brainstem, basal ganglia, and white matter of the cerebral hemisphere. He had no history of disease except for psychoneurosis. On admission, neurological examination found left hemiparesis and dysarthria. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging showed multiple small ring-like enhancement in the basal ganglia, brainstem, and deep white matter. Biopsy of the mass was performed. Histological examination revealed invasion of inflammatory cells in the white matter, especially around the b

An immunoassay to detect human müllerian inhibiting substance in males and females during normal development.

An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay has been developed to measure human Müllerian inhibiting substance (MIS) in biological fluids. The enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay is specific for MIS, with a sensitivity in human serum to 0.5 ng/ml and does not recognize transforming growth factor-beta 1 or -beta 2, LH, or FSH. It similarly fails to recognize other proteins secreted from the cell type into which the MIS gene was cloned. MIS was detected in the serum of normal newborns, infants, children, and adults. In males the serum level of MIS is 10-70 ng/mL at birth. The level increases slightly aft

A case of epiphora and recurrent basal cell carcinoma of the nasal tip and review of acquired nasolacrimal system obstruction.

A case of a 67-year-old man with recurrent basal cell carcinoma of the nasal tip and an incidental symptom of epiphora (volunteered by the patient) is presented. Epiphora is an abnormal overflow of tears that fail to drain into the inferior nasal meatus via the nasolacrimal system. Within the differential diagnosis of epiphora and nasolacrimal obstruction is neoplasm - primary, secondary or metastatic. On further investigation, including computed tomography imaging, he was subsequently found to have invasive disease extending along the left embryological cleavage plane superiorly to the medial

Multiple metastases of carcinoma basocellulare into spinal column.

Basal cell carcinoma presents a relatively low potential and local malignancy and very slow growth giving only occasionally metastatic spreading. The frequency of occurrence of metastatic dissemination is estimated in the literature depending on examined population from 0.028% to 0.55%. Metastases are most often found in lymph nodes, lungs bones and internal organs: liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, pleura and the peritoneum. Authors present a case of a 69-years old female with an extensive basal cell carcinoma of the head convexity, infiltrating the subcutaneous tissue, periostium, bone

Histoplasmosis presenting as a cutaneous malignancy of the eyelid.

Cutaneous histoplasmosis is an uncommon infection and can occur as a primary infection. A manifestation imitating a cutaneous neoplasm is rare, and eyelid involvement is rarer still. The authors report a case of histoplasmosis that presented as an ulcerated lesion on the lower eyelid margin that clinically resembled a basal cell carcinoma. Given its worldwide distribution, it is important to include this disease in the differential diagnosis of nonhealing eyelid lesions. Biopsy and tissue culture are paramount to establishing the diagnosis. This case describes a rare presentation of histoplasm

Clear cell myoepithelioma of palate with emphasis on clinical and histological differential diagnosis.

Myoepitheliomas account for less than 1% of all salivary gland tumors and mostly occur in the parotid gland and palate. A 58-year old male patient reported to the Outpatient Department of PMS College of Dental Science and Research (Kerala, India) with a slow growing painless swelling on the palate for 4 years. Pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenoma, myoepithelioma, cyst adenoma, lipoma, neurofibroma, neurilemmoma and leiomyoma were considered. Histopathology revealed a thinly encapsulated tumor composed mainly of sheets of clear cells mixed with cells having eosinophilic cytoplasm. Histopatho

[Radiation-induced skin injuries].

Early radiation dermatitis develops after large doses of X-radiation. Inflammatory erythema develops within about a week. This may heal with desquamation and pigmentation. If the dose was high enough, painful blisters may develop at the site of erythema. In that case, healing usually takes place with atrophy, teleangiectasia, and irregular hyperpigmentation. Subsequent to very large doses, ulceration occurs, generally within 2 months. Such an ulcer may heal ultimately with severe atrophic scarring. Chronic radiation dermatitis occurs from a few months to many years. The skin shows atrophy, tel

Progress in cutaneous cancer research.

Cutaneous cancers represent a major public health concern due to the very high incidence, associated medical costs, substantial mortality, and cosmetic deformities associated with treatment. Considerable progress in basic research has provided new insights into the underlying genetic basis of the major human cutaneous cancers, malignant melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. In turn, these genetic insights have illuminated biochemical pathways that promise to provide new approaches to the prevention and treatment of cutaneous neoplasms. This review will detail the evolvin

Paraneoplastic Hypoglycaemia in a Patient With Solitary Fibrous Tumor of Pleura.

Solitary fibrous tumours (SFTs) are rare spindle cell neoplasms, predominantly benign, comprising less than 2% of all soft tissue masses. In rare cases, SFTs can lead to Doege-Potter syndrome, a paraneoplastic condition characterised by hypoglycaemia due to elevated levels of insulin-like growth factor II (IGF-II). Patients typically present with symptomatic hypoglycaemia related to this hormonal dysregulation. We report the case of a 70-year-old man who presented with weight loss, cough, fatigue, tingling, and episodes of confusion associated with recurrent hypoglycaemia. Chest radiography re

Pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma: a distinctive meningocerebral glioma of young subjects with relatively favorable prognosis. A study of 12 cases.

Twelve cases of a distinctive form of supratentorial astrocytoma occurring in young subjects (ages 7 to 25) are reported. The tumors were superficial and involved the leptomeninges extensively. The tumor cells display marked pleomorphism, including bizarre giant cells and a number of mitotic figures, but no necrosis. Many contain large amounts of lipid in their cytoplasm and are surrounded by reticulin fibers, thus simulating a mesenchymal tumor. For these reasons, some examples of this tumor have been previously interpreted to represent meningocerebral fibrous xanthomas. Immunoperoxidase tech

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma of salivary glands: a report of 2 cases with expression of basal/myoepithelial markers (calponin, CD10 and p63 protein).

Mammary analog secretory carcinoma (MASC) of salivary glands is a recently described neoplasm with favorable outcome. We describe 2 cases of MASC occurring in a 34-year-old female and a 58-year-old male, both presenting with a swelling of upper lip and right parotid gland, measuring 15 and 20mm, respectively. Without adjuvant treatment, both patients have been free of disease for 15 months and 12 months since the operation. Microscopically, both tumors were cystic and showed tubular and cystopapillary architecture. The tumor cells had round to oval nuclei and eosinophilic cytoplasm. Presence o

Androgen Receptor Immunohistochemistry is Superior to PRAME for the Differentiation of Sebaceous Carcinoma From Primary Cutaneous Basaloid Mimics.

Cutaneous sebaceous neoplasia comprises a spectrum of disease ranging from benign adenomas to malignant carcinomas. The hallmark of these lesions is sebaceous differentiation. However, poorly-differentiated sebaceous carcinoma (SC), which lacks significant overt sebaceous differentiation, can show morphologic overlap with a variety of other basaloid cutaneous neoplasms. The accurate classification of SC is essential not only for diagnosis, but also because of the potential association with Muir-Torre syndrome. Androgen receptor (AR) is a sensitive, but not entirely specific immunohistochemical

Fibrous lung tumor: a peculiar case.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura and the lung is an uncommon spindle cell neoplasm arising from the visceral pleura in the majority of the cases. However there are some extrapleural sites including the lung. Current considerations were raised by a peculiar recent case: an 81-year-old female, no smoker, presented with undefined left thoracic pain. Radiographic findings of a large solid lung mass (10 cm × 9 cm). Computed tomography (CT) confirmed the thoracic mass showing characteristics of a well defined mass with capsule, the position of the mass in proximity of the postero-basal and

Stem cell markers (cytokeratin 15, cytokeratin 19 and p63) in in situ and invasive cutaneous epithelial lesions.

The inherent longetivity of stem cells causes them to be susceptible to multiple genetic hits. Thus, it is not surprising that stem cells are implicated in the etiopathogenesis of select cutaneous neoplasms. However, most studies to date are restricted to the use of a single marker (p63, cytokeratin-15 or cytokeratin-19) and do not appear to compare distribution of stem cell markers in a spectrum of cutaneous in situ versus invasive epithelial malignancies. In this study, we evaluate expression of cytokeratin-15, cytokeratin-19, and p63 in a series of primary cutaneous epithelial lesions that

Basal Cell Adenoma of the Parotid Gland: A Rare Disease Entity.

Neoplasms of the salivary glands are of rare incidence, have a vague presentation, and follow a complex long-term clinical course. Both minor and major salivary glands have been implicated in dysplastic transformation, with parotid gland tumors being the most notable. Most of these tumors are benign in nature and are typically diagnosed and classified based on their histopathological presentation. In this report, we exhibit a rare case of basal cell adenomas (BCA), localized to the right parotid gland, in a 69-year-old male patient. Volume acquisition computed tomography (CT) imaging of the re

Reflectance confocal microscopy in the daily practice.

Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) allows noninvasive imaging of the epidermis and superficial dermis. Like dermoscopy, RCM acquires images in the horizontal plane (en face), allowing assessment of tissue pathology underlying dermoscopic structures of interest at a cellular-level resolution. Thus, clinicians using dermoscopy may find RCM to be particularly useful. Our aim was to show the value of RCM for diagnosis and management decisions related to pigmented and nonpigmented skin neoplasms seen in daily practice. Six cases of clinically and dermoscopically equivocal skin lesions, for which

Absence of detectable alterations in the putative tumor suppressor gene BTRC in cerebellar medulloblastomas and cutaneous basal cell carcinomas.

The sonic hedgehog signal transduction pathway is aberrantly activated in the majority of cutaneous basal cell carcinomas and a subset of cerebellar medulloblastomas. The latter tumors may also show activation of the wingless (Wnt) signaling pathway. In Drosophila, the F-box/WD40-repeat containing protein Slimb has been shown to function as an intracellular negative regulator of both pathways. The BTRC gene (beta-transducin repeat-containing protein) is a human homolog of Slimb that is located at 10q24.3, a chromosome region frequently deleted in medulloblastomas. Here, we report on the mutati

p53 immunoreactivity in inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the uterine cervix.

Immunoreactivity for the tumour suppressor gene product p53 is commonly found in many different human malignancies and few premalignant lesions. Data on cervical neoplasms, however, are still lacking. We retrospectively investigated p53 immunoreactivity in 92 lesions of the uterine cervix, including 44 cases of chronic cervicitis, 29 squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs), and 19 invasive carcinomas. p53 immunoreactivity, confined to the basal cell layer, was detected in 74 per cent of cases showing chronic cervicitis and in all cases with low-grade SILs. Conversely, suprabasal and/or diffuse
