No asthma, no parasites is a rare type of leukemia: chronic myeloid neoplasm with eosinophilia and abnormality of platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha.

Chronic myeloid neoplasm with eosinophilia and abnormality of platelet-derived growth factor receptor alpha (PDGFRA), referred as chronic eosinophilic leukemia, is an extremely rare neoplasm where long-term prognosis is uncertain though a high grade of responsiveness to Imatinib has been reported. The mortality and morbidity associated with chronic eosinophilic leukemia is associated with the degree of tissue involvement, damage, or both at diagnosis. We discuss a case of a young male patient with past medical history of hypoglycemia that presented to the emergency room with a complaints of a

Acute myelomonocytic leukemia with histologic features resembling sarcomatoid carcinoma in bone marrow.

We report a case of primary acute myelomonocytic leukemia involving the bone marrow that resembled sarcomatoid carcinoma. The neoplastic cells in bone marrow biopsy specimens formed cohesive-appearing clusters and cords separated by an immature fibroblastic proliferation and myxoid stroma. Blasts in the bone marrow aspirate smears formed clusters and sheets, and a subset of blasts exhibited erythrophagocytosis. Dysgranulopoiesis was also present. Lineage was confirmed by immunohistochemical analysis of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue. The tumor cells showed strong reactivity for lysoz

Solitary plasmacytoma of the jaw.

Solitary plasmacytoma may be considered as a rare neoplasm of head and neck and is a different disease compared to multiple myeloma. The main difference is related to the better clinical prognosis of solitary plasmacytoma, which may be clinically silent for several years but several local recurrences may be possible once diagnosed and treated. Clinical signs and symptoms of solitary plasmacytoma are related to bone pain and possible bone fractures. Partial local impairment of local bone function may be present. Bone swelling and local involvement of mucosa and local soft tissue may be revealed

Platelets and osteoblasts: secretome connections.

Megakaryocyte hyperplasia associated with myeloproliferative neoplasms commonly leads to abnormal bone tissue deposition in the bone marrow, known as osteosclerosis. In this study, we aimed to synthesize the known proteomics literature describing factors released by megakaryocytes and platelets and to examine if any of the secreted factors have a known ability to stimulate the bone-forming cells, osteoblasts. Using a systematic search of Medline, we identified 77 articles reporting on factors secreted by platelets and megakaryocytes. After a full-text screening and analysis of the studies, we

Multiple metastases of carcinoma basocellulare into spinal column.

Basal cell carcinoma presents a relatively low potential and local malignancy and very slow growth giving only occasionally metastatic spreading. The frequency of occurrence of metastatic dissemination is estimated in the literature depending on examined population from 0.028% to 0.55%. Metastases are most often found in lymph nodes, lungs bones and internal organs: liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, pleura and the peritoneum. Authors present a case of a 69-years old female with an extensive basal cell carcinoma of the head convexity, infiltrating the subcutaneous tissue, periostium, bone

The Incidence of Thromboembolic Events During Hospitalizations Following Surgical Resection of Lower Extremity Sarcomas in Children: Utilizing the Pediatric Health Information System Database.

BACKGROUND: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a frequent occurrence during treatment for adults with sarcoma. The incidence and underlying risk factors of postsurgical VTE in children and adolescents undergoing resection of sarcoma are unknown. METHODS: Using International Classification of Disease revision-9 diagnostic and procedure codes, the Pediatric Health Information System database was queried for patients aged 18 years and younger, discharged from 2004 to 2015 with a diagnosis of lower extremity malignant neoplasm who had a tumor resection or amputation performed during the encounter. Paravertebral infection (phlegmon) demonstrated by FDG dual-head coincidence imaging in a patient with multiple malignancies.

A 66-year-old woman was referred for a bone scan to assess back pain on a background of breast cancer, melanoma, and rheumatic heart disease. The scan appearance was suspicious for a localized soft tissue neoplasm. An FDG coincidence positron emission tomography (PET) study demonstrated a large FDG-avid soft tissue abnormality. Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from a subsequent needle biopsy. This case illustrates the use of FDG-PET in infection imaging, as well as demonstrating the potential pitfalls in nuclear oncology. Because FDG is not tumor-specific, accumulation in benign lesions may

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant: report of three cases with unusual histological findings.

Phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour mixed connective tissue variant (PMTMCT) is a rare tumour occurring in bone and soft tissue that usually behaves in a benign manner. Elaboration of biologically active substances by this tumour gives rise to a paraneoplastic syndrome known as oncogenic osteomalacia, manifesting clinically as bone pain, generalized weakness and pathological fractures. Recognition of PMTMCT and its associated syndrome is important, as resection of the tumour in most instances results in prompt resolution of symptoms. Previously reported cases of this tumour have emphasized the con

Atypical cartilage in type II germ cell tumors of the mediastinum show significantly different patterns of IDH1/2 mutations from conventional chondrosarcoma.

Neoplastic cartilage is a common component of teratomas in type II germ cell tumors. Although IDH1/2 mutations have been well-described in somatic cartilaginous tumors, ranging from benign enchondromas to highly aggressive dedifferentiated chondrosarcomas, the presence of IDH1/2 mutations in cartilaginous neoplasms arising from germ cell tumors has not been previously investigated. To better understand the relationship between these tumors and their bone/soft tissue counterpart, we studied the IDH1/2 mutational status of 20 cases of primary mediastinal mixed germ cell tumors with areas of read

Solitary Cervical Plasmacytoma Presenting as Acute Quadriparesis Following a Recent Cerebral Infarct: A Case Report.

Solitary plasmacytoma of bone (SPB) is a rare plasma-cell neoplasm that can cause acute neurological compromise, especially when involving the cervical spine. We report a 59-year-old male with a recent right hemispheric hemorrhagic infarct who developed rapidly progressive quadriparesis and urinary retention 15 days later. Neurological examination showed spastic quadriparesis with a C5 sensory level. MRI and CT revealed a pathological C4-C5 wedge compression fracture with cord compression. Emergency anterior C4-C5 corpectomy with fusion was performed. Intraoperative tissue culture grew Staphyl

[Concurrent subcutaneous panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma and myelodysplastic syndrome with fibrosis].

A 66-year-old male presented with fever and erythema at our hospital, and leukoerythroblastosis, anemia, thrombocytopenia, and multiple low-density lesions in the moderately enlarged spleen were detected. Skin tissue revealed CD8+ T cells with the expression of cytotoxic molecule markers involving fat lobules, and subcutaneous panniculitis T-cell lymphoma (SPTCL) was diagnosed. The bone marrow displayed no infiltration of lymphoid tumor cells, but hyperplasia of granulocytes and megakaryocytes with grade 2 stromal fibrosis. In addition, the bone marrow exhibited diffuse 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose

Multifocal inverted papillomas in the head and neck.

Inverted papilloma is a rare benign neoplasm that usually originates in the lateral nasal wall. It can be a locally aggressive lesion and invade nearby structures. While primarily a nasal neoplasm, cases of an inverted papilloma involving the temporal bone, pharynx, nasopharynx, and lacrimal sac have been reported. We describe the case of a 67-year-old man with a history of nasal inverted papilloma who presented with a recurrent nasal mass and a large mass on the left side of his upper neck. The patient's history included inverted papillomas in multiple locations: the temporal bone, the sinona

Type III cutaneous atypical meningioma of the scalp.

Meningiomas occur rarely in extracranial sites, including the skin, where they may pose a diagnostic challenge because of their histopathologic overlap with several other spindle-cell tumors. Cutaneous meningiomas are divided into type I (congenital), type II (ectopic), and type III (via direct extension) lesions. We present a rare case of atypical meningioma of the skin in a 71-year-old woman who presented with a painful and enlarging lesion on the left central frontal scalp. Biopsy showed bone and soft tissue with involvement of a spindle cell neoplasm, consisting of whorled nests with atypi

Metastatic colorectal adenocarcinoma of mandible.

Oral metastasis from the colon is quite rare with limited reporting and scientific evidence. The most common metastasis from colorectal cancer is to the liver followed by lungs, bones, and other organs. However rare occurrences like metastasis to the oral cavity might worsen the prognosis and treatment outcome. Oral metastatic tumors account only 1% of all the malignant neoplasms of the jaw. In most of the cases metastasis has been reported in the jaw bones compared to soft tissues. Persistent pain and delayed, prolonged healing should raise the question of an underlying lesion. An unusual cas

Craniopharyngioma arising in the pharyngeal hypophysis.

Four cases of nasopharyngeal craniopharyngiomas have been previously reported in the medical literature. They were, in fact, only nasopharyngeal extensions of tumors originating in the anterior pituitary of the sella turcica. Pituitary adenomas can arise from any part of the craniopharyngeal canal. Supporting this theory are four reported cases of pituitary adenomas in the body of the sphenoid bone separate from both the sella turcica and the nasopharynx. The discovery by Erdheim in 1904 of the pharyngeal hypophysis located on the posterior edge of the vomerine bone raises the possibility of a

The pathology of congenital localized gigantism.

Two cases of congenital localized gigantism are described. They illustrate a form of segmental limb disproportion, characterized pathologically by an excessive linear growth of the skeletal structures and by soft tissue lipomatosis. The gigantism was confined to bones of the right great toe and adjacent metatarsus in one case; it affected the long bones of a lower extremity in the second case. Case 2, followed for over 7 years, developed a fibrovascular hamartomatous neoplasm of rapid growth and some cytological atypia in infancy--but this was well controlled by conservative surgery. This type

Animal Models of Multiple Myeloma.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm which is defined by strong interactions with the bone marrow microenvironment, a compartment with high cellular heterogeneity and unique structural and extracellular components. This necessitates the use of in vivo models for research to fully recapitulate MM growth conditions. The selection of appropriate model system is crucial, as each has advantages and shortcomings. Here, we describe the murine models available for studying MM, and focus on the methods for inoculating mice with MM cells via intravenous, intratibial or subcutaneous delivery,

A case of extramedullary solitary plasmacytoma arising at the uterine cervix.

Extramedullary plasmacytomas are localized plasma cell neoplasms that arise in tissues other than bone and bone marrow. Primary plasmacytomas of the female genital tract are extremely rare and present a substantial diagnostic challenge. We report a case of a 38-year-old woman who presented with an endocervical polypoid. Surgical removal of the polyp was carried out. The final pathological report revealed primary plasmacytoma of the uterine cervix. The diagnosis was further facilitated by the use of immunohistochemistry and clonal immunoglobulin heavy-chain gene rearrangement. We performed a si

An unusual case of interstitial lung disease in a patient with cardiopulmonary syndrome as the initial presentation of Erdheim-Chester disease.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a very rare disorder with only approximately 600 cases reported in the literature. ECD has been recently reclassified as a histiocytic dendritic cell neoplasm. The clinical spectrum ranges from asymptomatic tissue accumulation of histiocytes to invasive tissue infiltration, which can cause fulminant multisystem failure. It typically presents with bone pain and constitutional symptoms. Extraosseous manifestations are not uncommon. ECD-associated interstitial lung disease has been described in 20%-35% of patients. Diagnosis is primarily by tissue biopsy and immun
