Expression of lectin binding in oral submucous fibrosis.

Lectins are a group of specific glycoproteins present in cells, particularly cell membrane. Recently, lectin binding studies have been used as a diagnostic as well as prognostic indicator of neoplasm's. Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a potential premalignant condition predominantly seen in Indian subcontinent. A comparison of expression of lectin binding was studied in normal tissue, OSMF cases and oral squamous cell carcinoma. The OSMF cases were grouped into early and advanced conditions as per the histopathologic criteria. Patterns of lectin binding observed with advanced OSMF cases were

Electrochemotherapy Treatment for Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Lip: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that affects the skin and mucous membranes. It may present as painless superficial lesions, or as rapidly growing, exophytic masses, sometimes ulcerated, which can invade and damage surrounding tissues. It is the second most common malignant neoplasm of the skin, characterized by high clinical variability, which makes early diagnosis and timely treatment essential to improve prognosis. The aim of this case report is to evaluate the clinical efficacy, tolerability, and durability of response of electrochemotherapy in the treatment of cuta

Simultaneous primary oat cell carcinoma (apudoma) and squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx.

The first case of the association of oat cell carcinoma and squamous carcinoma of the hypopharynx occurring in a 57-year-old man is reported. The patient underwent total laryngopharyngectomy with radical neck dissection, but died 3 1/2 months after diagnosis with multiple bone metastases of the ribs and vertebrae. The histogenesis of oat cell carcinoma in the hypopharynx is discussed, together with the therapeutic approach for the simultaneous occurrence of two primary malignant neoplasms in the same organ.

Expression of E-cadherin in normal, benign, and malignant tissues of female genital organs.

The expression of human E-cadherin in normal tissues and in benign and malignant tumors of female genital organs was examined immunohistochemically with a monoclonal antibody, HECD-1, specific for human E-cadherin. The normal tissues included the ovary, fallopian tube, uterine endometrium, uterine cervix, and vagina. E-cadherin was detected clearly in the cell-to-cell boundaries of both normal glandular and squamous epithelia obtained from those tissues. The tumor tissues consisted of 9 ovarian, 7 endometrial, and 4 cervical adenocarcinomas, 12 squamous cell carcinomas of the cervix, including

Orbito-ocular neoplasms in Enugu, South-Eastern, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Orbito-ocular neoplasms are important causes of ophthalmic morbidity and mortality. Various reports have shown that they occur more commonly among Africans than Caucasians. In this era of HIV pandemic, an increase in the frequency of AIDS-related orbito-ocular neoplasms has also been reported. OBJECTIVE: This study was carried out to determine the pattern of orbito-ocular tumours in Enugu, South-Eastern Nigeria and to compare it with the findings from earlier studies in the same area, other parts of Nigeria and other countries. METHODS: In a retrospective, non-comparative case se

Refractory aggressive keratoacanthoma centrifugum marginatum of the scalp controlled with the epidermal growth factor receptor inhibitor erlotinib.

Keratoacanthomas are squamous cell neoplasms known to be abundant in epidermal growth factor receptors (EGFRs). Erlotinib (Tarceva(®); Roche) is a low molecular weight oral quinazoline compound that binds to the intracellular EGFR tyrosine kinase domain and inhibits receptor phosphorylation and downstream signalling. We report a case of refractory, locally aggressive keratoacathoma centrifugum marginatum of the scalp having strong EGFR expression and demonstrating excellent response to erlotinib.

Ocular Human Papillomavirus Infections.

CONTEXT: - Human papillomavirus (HPV) has a well-known role in the pathogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma and precursor lesions of the cervix, anogenital region, and head and neck, but its role in the development of squamous neoplasms of the eye, particularly the conjunctiva, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: - To review recent evidence implicating HPV in the pathophysiology of ocular lesions. DATA SOURCES: - Published articles obtained from a PubMed search of the English literature were the primary sources for this review. CONCLUSIONS: - The low-risk HPV types 6 and 11 appear to play a role in

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma in a reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus).

An 8-year-old female adult reindeer (Rangifer tarandus tarandus) was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of Madrid for evaluation of a conjunctival mass on the left eye which had been present for about 2 months. A surgical excision was performed and biopsy material submitted for light microscopic evaluation which confirmed the diagnosis of conjuctival squamous cell carcinoma. Nuclear p53 immunolabeling was found in 52% of the neoplastic cells. Follow-up examination at 12 months postsurgery did not reveal recurrence of this neoplasm. Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma has not been reported pr

Early detection and treatment of skin cancer.

The incidence of skin cancer is increasing by epidemic proportions. Basal cell cancer remains the most common skin neoplasm, and simple excision is generally curative. Squamous cell cancers may be preceded by actinic keratoses-premalignant lesions that are treated with cryotherapy, excision, curettage or topical 5-fluorouracil. While squamous cell carcinoma is usually easily cured with local excision, it may invade deeper structures and metastasize. Aggressive local growth and metastasis are common features of malignant melanoma, which accounts for 75 percent of all deaths associated with skin

Malignant transformation of a maxillary follicular ameloblastoma to squamous cell carcinoma: A case report and review of literature.

INTRODUCTION: Ameloblastoma is a benign but locally infiltrative epithelial odontogenic neoplasm of the jawbones. Ameloblastoma and squamous cell carcinoma commonly affect the mandible and maxilla. However, malignant transformation of ameloblastoma into squamous cell carcinoma is extremely rare. CASE PRESENTATION: A 72-year-old man presented with a rapidly enlarging mass in the maxilla. Diagnostic imaging revealed a large mass with lytic changes involving the anterior and left aspects of the maxilla, and extending superiorly into the maxillary sinus. The patient underwent curettage treatment

An Unusual Case of a Scrotal Porocarcinoma and Review of the Literature.

Porocarcinomas are rare tumors derived from the acrosyringium and eccrine ducts, which most commonly occur on the lower extremities or head and neck region in older adults. Microscopically, they invariably demonstrate continuity with the epithelium, showing downgrowth of broad anastomosing bands with more infiltrative intradermal cords and nests of pleomorphic tumor cells with ductal lumina; an associated poroma may also be seen. We report an unusual case of a porocarcinoma arising on the scrotum of a 55-year-old man. Because of the extraordinary location and the presence of keratinizing squam

Aspiration cytology of pleomorphic adenoma with squamous metaplasia: A case series and literature review illustrating diagnostic challenges.

OBJECTIVE: Squamous metaplasia is not uncommonly observed in salivary gland neoplasms, including pleomorphic adenomas (PAs). It poses as a diagnostic pitfall with cytomorphologic features overlapping with low-grade epithelial malignances and carcinoma ex-PA. We report series of aspirates of PAs with squamous metaplasia and review the literature for the clinicopathological and cytologic features of this diagnostically challenging entity. METHODS: Three cases including index aspiration cytology, post-aspiration specimen cytology, cell block immunohistochemistry (IHC), histologic correlation, an

Expression of glutathione S-transferase-pi in malignant skin tumors.

GST-pi has been known to be markedly increased in human (pre) neoplasms of several organs. In this paper, the significance of immunohistochemical detection of GST-pi in human malignant tumors of the skin was studied. In specimens from 40 patients with various skin cancers, malignant melanoma, Paget's disease and undifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma showed strong reactivity in GST-pi staining. The reactions were negative or weak in Bowen's disease, basal cell epithelioma and solar keratosis. In normal melanocytes, eccrine, apocrine, and breast gland cells stained positively but not in kerat

Paraneoplastic acrokeratosis of Bazex (Bazex's syndrome): report of a female case associated with cholangiocarcinoma and review of the published work.

Paraneoplastic acrokeratosis of Bazex (PAB) or Bazex's syndrome is a rare, paraneoplastic syndrome that mostly affects men over 40 years old, and generally associates with squamous cell carcinoma of the upper aerodigestive tract. We describe a 57-year-old woman with the characteristic features of PAB, including violaceous erythematous, scaling eruption, palmoplantar keratoderma and nail dystrophy. Further analysis revealed the underlying neoplasm to be cholangiocarcinoma. The clinical aspects of PAB and associated neoplasms are reviewed.

Perineural Invasion of Cranial Nerves in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma: Unraveling Its Complexities, Diagnostic Challenges, and Multifaceted Treatment Approaches.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is the second most common neoplasm among non-melanoma skin cancers. When associated with perineural invasion of the cranial nerves, with clinical features often observed in trigeminal and facial nerves due to their cutaneous extension, it may lead to a worse prognosis. This paper introduces a rare case of an 81-year-old male, with a history of a moderately differentiated invasive carcinoma of the left frontal region with perineural invasion on the left trigeminal cranial nerve. The case underscores the aggressive nature of the intraneural infiltration by squam
