The case of an 18-year-old man with numerous neurofibromas along his left ulnar nerve is described. The patient had a painful mass in the medial third of the internal aspect of his left forearm, and two additional symptomatic painful masses were identified during clinical examination: one in the distal portion of the retroepitroclear groove and another near the Guyon tunnel in the wrist. The main symptom was neurogenic pain; however, sensory and motor disturbances were also present. No other stigma of neurofibromatosis (NF) was found, and no cases of NF were known in the patient's family. Duri

We described an unusual male patient with two disfiguring diseases, benign symmetric lipomatosis and giant rhinophyma, which gave him a grotesque appearance. His physical appearance had isolated him from the rest of society and was probably the main reason for his alcohol abuse.

High-grade glioma with pleomorphic and pseudopapillary features (HPAP) is a recently identified methylation cluster comprised of relatively circumscribed gliomas enriched for variants in TP53, RB1, NF1, NF2, BRAF and with a more favorable clinical outcome than IDH-wildtype glioblastoma. Here, we present two cases occurring in young adults, one of which occurred in the background of NF2-related schwannomatosis. Both cases demonstrated characteristic histologic features including ependymoma-like areas (Case #1) and an astroblastoma-like phenotype (Case #2), as well as archetypal pseudopapillary

The majority of vestibular schwannomas occur as solitary tumors in otherwise healthy individuals with no family history of vestibular schwannomas, while approximately 5% are associated with the tumor suppressor syndrome, NF2-related schwannomatosis. However, pathogenic variants in the NF2 gene are by far the most common genetic aberration found in both NF2-related schwannomatosis tumors and sporadic vestibular schwannomas. Indeed, in most schwannomas, loss of both copies of the NF2 gene can be detected. Nonetheless, vestibular schwannomas contain a relatively low overall burden of pathogenic v

The clinical spectrum of paediatric NF2-SWN is broad and differs from that seen in the cohort of patients presenting over age 30, where symptoms typically relate to enlarging schwannoma, meningioma or ependymoma. Paediatric cases tend to have a multisystemic presentation with a high tumour burden and significant physical and psychological morbidity. Visual impairment as well as dermatological and non-tumour neurological features are common. Genetic testing characteristically identifies a germline pathogenic variant (often truncating) in the NF2 gene. This review explores the spectrum of clinic

NF2-related schwannomatosis (NF2; previously termed neurofibromatosis type 2) is a tumor-prone disorder characterized by development of multiple schwannomas and meningiomas. The diagnostic criteria of NF2 have been regularly revised. Clinical criteria for NF2 were first formulated at the National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference in 1987 and revised in 1990. Revised criteria were also proposed by the Manchester group in 1992 and by the National Neurofibromatosis Foundation (NNFF) in 1997. The 2011 Baser criteria improved the sensitivity of diagnostic criteria, particularly for patients

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Individuals with neurofibromatosis 1 may experience changes in their appearance due to physical manifestations of the disorders and/or treatment sequelae. Appearance concerns related to these physical changes can lead to psychological distress and poorer quality of life. While many neurofibromatosis 1 clinical trials focus on assessing changes in tumor volume, evaluating patients' perspectives on corresponding changes in symptoms such as physical appearance can be key secondary outcomes. We aimed to determine whether any existing patient-reported outcome measures are appropria

The three main types of nerve sheath tumors are schwannomas, neurofibromas and perineuriomas. Multiple neurofibromas throughout the body are the hallmark of Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Spinal nerve sheath tumors are classified in the group of intradural extramedullary spinal cord tumors, in which they are the most common type (25-30%). Their incidence is 3-4 per 1 million people. Spinal schwannomas are encountered sporadically or in the context of Neurofibromatosis type 2, while neurofibromas are typical for patients with Neurofibromatosis type 1. Neurofibromas are composed predominantly o

In patients with type 1 neurofibromatosis (NF1), there is an increased susceptibility to tumor development in the central nervous system due to the loss of neurofibromin, an inactivator of the protooncogene Ras. NF1 has a broad clinical spectrum, which includes spinal tumors. Although the most common intramedullary tumor of the spinal cord in adults is ependymoma, few patients with NF1 accompanied by spinal ependymoma have been reported to date, and the localization of the tumors is cervical and thoracic in these cases. In this study, we report the case of a patient with NF1 presenting to our c

BACKGROUND: Spinal lesions are a known manifestation of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). The aim of this retrospective review was to analyze and report the prevalence of spinal lesions on imaging in a large NF1 center.
METHODS: The data were collected from a period of 62 months from a cohort of 514 patients. Data were collected from multidisciplinary team meeting reports that included radiologic reports of each patient investigating 20 distinct variables. The prevalence of each of these lesions was calculated, and any statistically significant associations were investigated using the χ2 test.

A man with a history of neurofibromatosis presented to our hospital with a soft palate mass. Since the patient had neurofibromatosis, we diagnosed the mass as a neurofibroma and planned annual regular follow-up without any treatment. Five months later, the patient visited our emergency department because of uncontrolled epistaxis, and the mass was enlarged to the extent of the airway obstruction. Endoscopic resection was performed and the tumor was confirmed to be a leiomyosarcoma. The malignant potential of the new lesion in a neurofibromatosis patient should be actively evaluated and treated

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a neurocutaneous condition with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. This congenital disease is characterized by a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and degree of severity. This case report describes a female patient in her early 20s who presented with a complaint of lumbosciatica-like pain evolving for several months. The condition initially escaped the attention of clinicians until a lumbar computed tomography scan and spinal magnetic resonance imaging were performed. The patient was then transferred to the general surgery department, where a

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), NF2, and schwannomatosis are related, but distinct, tumor suppressor syndromes characterized by a predilection for tumors in the central and peripheral nervous systems. NF1 is one of the most common autosomal dominant conditions of the nervous system. NF1 has a high degree of variability in clinical presentation, which may include multiple neoplasms as well as cutaneous, vascular, bony, and cognitive features. Some of these manifestations overlap with other genetic conditions. Accurate diagnosis of NF1 is important for individualizing clinical care and genetic c
