Paediatric neurology in Africa: a Ugandan report.

The findings in 138 children attending a neurology clinic in Uganda are presented. In contrast with findings in developed countries, only 25 had an abnormal birth and history dating from birth compared with 63 who had a normal birth and early development with symptoms of postnatal onset. The commonest mode of onset in the postnatal period was a catastrophic, feverish illness. Effective and usually easily achieved drug control of epilepsy and hyperkinesis enabled most parents to cope with disabled children. Simple explanation to parents and teachers can reduce the rejection and educational reta…

Treatment of dementia: recommendations of the Scientific Department of Cognitive Neurology and Aging of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology.

There is currently no cure for neurodegenerative or vascular dementias, but some pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions may contribute to alleviate symptoms, slow disease progression and improve quality of life. Current treatment approaches are based on etiology, symptom profile and stage of dementia. This manuscript presents recommendations on pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments of dementia due to Alzheimer's disease, vascular cognitive impairment, frontotemporal dementia, Parkinson's disease dementia, and dementia with Lewy bodies.

Practice parameter: medical treatment of infantile spasms: report of the American Academy of Neurology and the Child Neurology Society.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the current best practice for treatment of infantile spasms in children. METHODS: Database searches of MEDLINE from 1966 and EMBASE from 1980 and searches of reference lists of retrieved articles were performed. Inclusion criteria were the documented presence of infantile spasms and hypsarrhythmia. Outcome measures included complete cessation of spasms, resolution of hypsarrhythmia, relapse rate, developmental outcome, and presence or absence of epilepsy or an epileptiform EEG. One hundred fifty-nine articles were selected for detailed review. Recommendations were base

Management in severe dementia: recommendations of the Scientific Department of Cognitive Neurology and Aging of the Brazilian Academy of Neurology.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other neurodegenerative dementias have a progressive course, impairing cognition, functional capacity, and behavior. Most studies have focused on AD. Severe dementia is associated with increased age, higher morbidity-mortality, and rising costs of care. It is fundamental to recognize that severe dementia is the longest period of progression, with patients living for many years in this stage. It is the most heterogeneous phase in the process, with different abilities and life expectancies. This practice guideline focuses on severe dementia to improve management and

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) for semi-critical neurology presentations in a non-acute neurology set-up: clinical practice and challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) for semi-critical neurological manifestations can be managed in non-acute setting instead of critical care unit. In 2014, we established a non-acute neurology TPE unit for semi-critical haemodynamically stable patients. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the technical and safety parameters from the first 3 years of service. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analysed prospectively collected TPE data for patients treated with centrifugation TPE at our non-acute neurology TPE unit in Kuala Lumpur Hospital between May 2015 and June 2018. RESULTS: A total …

Report from the child neurology education and training workshop at the International Child Neurology Congress 2024: Expert'saddressing the training gap.

This report summarizes the key findings of a workshop undertaken at the International Child Neurology Congress in 2024 by child neurologists with expertise in training education and invested colleagues. The workshop aimed to explore global issues which have impact on access to child neurology training. The major findings supported a great need for more training programs globally, that consensus is needed for the minimum standards of training, and that training programs can be strengthened via global health partnerships especially with collaborations from regions with more available resources. …

Clinical Neurology in Practice: The Shoulder (Part 1).

BACKGROUND: The shoulder's complex anatomy and biomechanics render it uniquely susceptible to neurological disorders, spanning radiculopathies, plexopathies, and myopathies. Despite its clinical relevance, the shoulder remains understudied in neurological practice, where its dysfunction often serves as an early marker of underlying pathology. A comprehensive understanding of its anatomic, neural, and vascular foundations is essential for accurate diagnosis and management. REVISION SUMMARY: This review focuses on the shoulder's osteoligamentous architecture, motor and sensory innervation, vasc

Clinical Neurology in Practice: The Shoulder (Part 2).

BACKGROUND: The shoulder's intricate neuroanatomy and biomechanics render it uniquely vulnerable to a broad spectrum of neurological disorders, from central lesions to peripheral nerve injuries. While Part 1 of this series established the anatomic and neurological foundations of shoulder function, Part 2 focuses on the pathologic landscape of neurological shoulder affections. These conditions-ranging from rare central syndromes to common peripheral neuropathies-often present diagnostic challenges due to overlapping clinical features with orthopedic and rheumatological disorders. A systematic u

[Migraine aura: differential diagnostics between ophthalmology and neurology].

Migraine aura is a common and diagnostically important phase of migraine. Approximately 25-35 % of individuals with migraine experience fully reversible focal neurological symptoms that typically develop gradually, spread over time, and occur in succession. Visual symptoms are the most common and include scintillating scotomas, fortification spectra, photopsias (flashes of light), and transient visual field defects. Sensory, language, motor, and brainstem symptoms may also occur. This article reviews the clinical spectrum of migraine aura based on the ICHD-3 diagnostic criteria and its charact

Cannabidiol in Neurology: Current Insights and Translational Perspectives.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the most studied compounds of Cannabis sativa and has attracted significant interest due to its therapeutic and beneficial properties, which have been confirmed in numerous preclinical and clinical studies over the last few years. A great advantage of CBD over the other widely known Cannabis sativa ingredient, Δ-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), is that CBD does not exert intoxicating and psychoactive effects, making it an attractive candidate for therapeutic applications in neurological disorders. CBD has been shown to exert antioxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, a

Neurofilament Light Chain as a Biomarker in Neurology.

BACKGROUND: Neurofilament light chain (NfL) has emerged as a highly sensitive biomarker of neuroaxonal injury across diverse neurological disorders. This narrative review synthesizes current evidence regarding its diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic-monitoring utility, while outlining major clinical limitations and emphasizing the complementary role of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP). SUMMARY: NfL concentrations increase following axonal damage and correlate with inflammatory activity, lesion burden, and long-term disability progression in multiple sclerosis. Elevated levels also r

André-Thomas (1867-1963), Initiator of Neonatal Neurology.

After a brilliant career as a clinician and anatomopathologist, André-Thomas (1868-1963) spent the last 30 years of his life validating the components of neurological examinations of newborns and infants. This novel approach was developed through long examinations of several hundreds of normal and sick children, notably those with anencephaly. By combining his vast knowledge of physiology with the results of his experimental work, André-Thomas built the foundations of a speciality that did not exist before his time: neuropaediatrics. His Études neurologiques (neurological studies), medical in
