AIM: The term kyphosis is used to describe the spinal curve that results in an abnormally rounded back. Kyphosis may develop due to trauma, developmental anomalies, degenerative disc disease, inflammatory diseases, and infectious diseases and also iatrogenic. The aim of this paper is to review the etiopathognesis and the treatment management of kyphosis.
METHODS: A search in the National Library of Medicine (Pubmed) database using key word 'kyphosis' and was made. For the literature review, papers concerning etiopathogenesis, classification and treatment were selected among these papers.

OBJECTIVE: Hydrocephalus is a chronic, treatable, but in most cases incurable condition characterized by long periods of stability punctuated by crises. Patients in crisis usually seek care in an emergency department (ED). How patients with hydrocephalus use EDs has received almost no epidemiological study.
METHODS: Data were taken from the National Emergency Department Survey for 2018. Visits by patients with hydrocephalus were identified by diagnostic codes. Neurosurgical visits were identified by codes for imaging of the brain or skull or by neurosurgical procedure codes. Visits and dispos

Introduction Liberia recently employed the first neurosurgeon in the country's history. In a country with a population of 4.7 million people … Conclusion After an aggressive and in-depth approach to planning, conducting, and supplying complex neurosurgical procedures in Liberia, the greatest limiting factor to successful outcomes lie in real-time is access to health care, which is largely limited by overall infrastructure. Our study documents the experience of a team of neurosurgeons, critical care nurses, scrub …

Surgical robotic systems have been available for almost twenty years. The first surgical robotic systems were designed as supportive systems for laparoscopic approaches in general surgery (the first procedure was a cholecystectomy in 1987). The da Vinci Robotic System is the most common system used for robotic surgery today. This system is widely used in urology, gynecology and other surgical disciplines, and recently there have been initial reports of its use in spine surgery, for transoral access and anterior approaches for lumbar inter-body fusion interventions. SpineAssist, which is widely

Endocrinological evaluation is essential in neurosurgery for pituitary-hypothalamic disorders and intracranial conditions, such as tumors, trauma, hemorrhagic/ischemic events, inflammatory diseases, and iatrogenic injuries. Appropriate selection and interpretation of hormonal tests influence diagnosis, treatment strategies, perioperative care, and long-term outcomes. Baseline assessments should include measurements of anterior pituitary hormones (ACTH, TSH, GH, LH/FSH, and prolactin) and their corresponding peripheral hormones (cortisol, free thyroxine, IGF-1, and sex steroids). Because adrena

BACKGROUND: Olfactory schwannomas (OS) attachment sites include the olfactory groove and cribriform plate, the anterior skull base, falx cerebri, crista galli, orbit and the planum sphenoidale. This literature review aims to characterize outcomes associated with OS attachment sites.
METHODS: A literature review was conducted utilizing PubMed. Only studies describing OS and the tumor's origin were included. The primary outcomes of interest were anosmia outcomes and tumor characteristics.
RESULTS: Thirty-eight studies including 42 cases of OS were included. 71.4% (n = 30) of OS originated from

In the last few decades, endovascular neurosurgery has progressed from treating conventional cerebrovascular pathology to expanding outside the realm of vascular neurosurgery. As technologies, techniques, and devices are developed and refined, more patients with neurologic conditions can be treated with a less-invasive endovascular approach. For pathologies such as neurodegenerative diseases or hydrocephalus, the surgical treatment paradigm is starting to change with novel endovascular innovations. We anticipate more pathologies treatable by endovascular means, as more technological progress i

Endoscopy allows neurosurgeons to reach regions in the brain and spine through minimally invasive approaches. Such areas were previously accessible only by extensive and invasive approaches that limited the ability to see the areas of interest. Physicians are increasingly caring for patients who have undergone these procedures (eg, for pituitary tumors, hydrocephalus, and other intracranial, peripheral nerve, and spinal problems). This article familiarizes nonneurosurgeons with these techniques.
