Pigmented lesions of the nail unit are commonly encountered in the clinical setting. To determine the prevalence of congenital melanoevocytic nevi (CMN), of so-called congenital nevus-like nevi (CNLN), nevi spili (NS) and café-au-lait spots (CLS) in childhood, a series of 939 children aged 8-16 years had total skin examination. We describe a case of a giant conjunctival nevus presented in a 12-year-old girl with suspicious clinicomorphological appearance. The lesion was noticed by the parents at the age of 3 years as a "fleshy spot" on the bulbar conjunctiva. The lesion remained unchanged until approx. 6 months before recent admission. The pathologic and immunohistochemical features of 5 cases of blue nevus of the endocervix are presented: 4 of them were studied ultrastructurally. The lesions were incidentaly discovered at microscopic examination and showed pigmented dendritic cells in the cervical stroma. Immunocytochemical examination showed all cases to be positive for S-100 protein. Ultrastructurally they contained melanosomes, were surrounded by a basement membrane, and displayed occasional desmosome-like devices. Histogenesis is discussed, and support for a schwannian origin is presented.

A 1-year-old boy had grayish pigmentation on the left side of his face over the area supplied by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. Upon further examination, the lesion was also found on the left side of the neck, shoulder, upper arm, right lower back and buttock. The pigmentation was uniform in intensity. This case report demonstrates that Mongolian spots can occur on the face in the area supplied by the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve. These spots should not be misdiagnosed as nevus of Ota.
