Hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbon via lysine-assisted self-assembly for efficient CO2 capture.

Nitrogen-doped ordered mesoporous carbons (NOMCs) were synthesized by single-step hydrothermal self-assembly using F127 as a soft template, hexamine as a formaldehyde source, l-lysine as a polymerization catalyst, and 3-aminophenol as both carbon and nitrogen sources. The microstructure of the NOMCs was characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption, TEM, FTIR, and XPS. The results indicated that the obtained NOMCs exhibited a large specific surface area, uniform pore size distribution and highly ordered 2-D hexagonal mesostructure (P6mm). Besides, the nitrogen was uniformly doped into the car

Electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia: catalyst design, electrolyte engineering and application scenarios.

The nitrate accumulation in aquatic environments can be converted into ammonia (NH3) by electrochemical reduction, possessing a great potential to replace the Haber-Bosh (HB) process for green NH3 synthesis, which is of great significance in promoting modern agriculture and carbon-free energy systems. In recent years, significant advances in NH3 electrosynthesis via the nitrate reduction reaction (NO3RR) have been achieved. Previous reviews have provided valuable perspectives on catalyst development and mechanistic understanding of NO3RR. Here, we provide an integrated perspective centered on

Decoupling Radical Generation and Copper Catalysis for the Remote C-H Cyanation of Unfunctionalized Sulfonamides.

A decoupled photoredox/copper dual catalytic system for the remote C(sp3)-H cyanation of aliphatic sulfonamides is described. The strategy circumvents the need for substrate prefunctionalization, a limitation of previous "coupled" systems. An acridinium photocatalyst generates a nitrogen radical from a free N-H bond, while an independent copper cycle, sustained by an external oxidant, forges the C-CN bond with high δ-selectivity.

The importance of the urea cycle and its relationships to polyamine metabolism during ammonium stress in Medicago truncatula.

The ornithine-urea cycle (urea cycle) makes a significant contribution to the metabolic responses of lower photosynthetic eukaryotes to episodes of high nitrogen availability. In this study, we compared the role of the plant urea cycle and its relationships to polyamine metabolism in ammonium-fed and nitrate-fed Medicago truncatula plants. High ammonium resulted in the accumulation of ammonium and pathway intermediates, particularly glutamine, arginine, ornithine, and putrescine. Arginine decarboxylase activity was decreased in roots, suggesting that the ornithine decarboxylase-dependent produ

Field study on the effects of antibiotic exposure and environmental heterogeneity on nitrogen conversion processes in constructed wetlands.

Antibiotics in wastewater treatment plant effluents may threaten constructed wetlands, but their field-scale effects on nitrogen cycling and microbial resistance remain unclear. This study examines how antibiotic exposure and environmental heterogeneity jointly influence nitrogen transformation, antibiotic resistance gene dissemination, and microbial stability in constructed wetlands. Field data showed that antibiotic levels in constructed wetlands receiving treated wastewater were generally below 500 ng L-1. In antibiotic-exposed constructed wetlands, denitrification rates correlated negative

Climate Change and Nitrogen-Fixing Legumes: Investigating Stress-Modulated Dynamics of Carbon Fixation and Root Nodulation.

In the Anthropocene era, climate change is increasingly subjecting the crops to overlapping abiotic stressors such as drought, elevated temperatures, and air pollution, thereby disrupting their physiological integrity and functional performance. This review synthesises current knowledge on responses of N2-fixing plants to such stressors, focusing on core physiological processes and symbiotic nitrogen fixation via nodulation. The intricate interdependence between these traits is explored through the lens of altered source-sink relationships, which are highly sensitive to multifactorial environm

Enhanced purinergic contractile responses and P2X1 receptor expression in detrusor muscle during cycles of hypoxia-glucopenia and reoxygenation.

Bladders from patients with detrusor overactivity have an increased atropine-resistant contractile response to nerve stimulation. The bladder has also been shown to be very susceptible to hypoxia-glucopenia and reperfusion injury, leading to the hypothesis that episodes of hypoxia-glucopenia and reoxygenation result in increased atropine-resistant responses to nerve stimulation in the detrusor muscle. Detrusor muscle strips were suspended in a Perspex organ bath chamber of volume 0.2 ml perfused with Krebs solution at 37°C aerated with 21% O2, 5% CO2 and the balance nitrogen. Hypoxia-glucopeni

Preparation of nitrogen-doped biocarbon from sewage sludge and pine sawdust for superior hydrogen sulfide removal: Experimental and DFT studies.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a major air pollutant posing a serious threat to both the environment and public health. In this study, a novel nitrogen-rich biocarbon that effectively removes H2S was produced from a mixture of sewage sludge and pine sawdust using melamine as nitrogen source. Compared with pristine biocarbons, nitrogen (N)-doped biocarbons possessed an adjustable porosity, e.g., higher specific surface area of 786-1547 m2/g, richer nitrogen content of 9.02-10.22%, and larger pore volume of 0.31-0.88 cm3/g. In particular, when H2S flow rate was 100 mL/min at 25 °C under dry condition

Identification of the mechanism of NO reduction with ammonia (SCR) on zeolite catalysts.

Cu/zeolites efficiently catalyze selective reduction of environmentally harmful nitric oxide with ammonia. Despite over a decade of research, the exact NO reduction steps remain unknown. Herein, using a combined spectroscopic, catalytic and DFT approach, we show that nitrosyl ions (NO+) in zeolitic micropores are the key intermediates for NO reduction. Remarkably, they react with ammonia even below room temperature producing molecular nitrogen (the reaction central to turning the NO pollutant to benign nitrogen) through the intermediacy of the diazo N2H+ cation. Experiments with isotopically l

Synthesizing evidence for the external cycling of NOx in high- to low-NOx atmospheres.

External cycling regenerating nitrogen oxides (NOx ≡ NO + NO2) from their oxidative reservoir, NOz, is proposed to reshape the temporal-spatial distribution of NOx and consequently hydroxyl radical (OH), the most important oxidant in the atmosphere. Here we verify the in situ external cycling of NOx in various environments with nitrous acid (HONO) as an intermediate based on synthesized field evidence collected onboard aircraft platform at daytime. External cycling helps to reconcile stubborn underestimation on observed ratios of HONO/NO2 and NO2/NOz by current chemical model schemes and ratio

Innovative treatment of industrial effluents through combining ferric iron and attapulgite application.

The escalation of industrial activities has escalated the production of pharmaceutical and dyeing effluents, raising significant environmental issues. In this investigation, a hybrid approach of Fenton-like reactions and adsorption was used for deep treatment of these effluents, focusing on effects of variables like hydrogen peroxide concentration, catalyst type, pH, reaction duration, temperature, and adsorbent quantity on treatment effectiveness, and the efficacy of acid-modified attapulgite (AMATP) and ferric iron (Fe(III))-loaded AMATP (Fe(III)-AMATP) was examined. Genome-resolved insights into the bacterial phylum WOR-3: hydrogenotrophic metabolism and unique carbon fixation via archaeal form III RuBisCO.

The WOR-3 phylum is widely distributed in various environments, including hot springs, marine ecosystems, and hydrothermal vents, yet its ecological roles and metabolic capabilities remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed 181 medium- to high-quality metagenome-assembled genomes, including 59 newly reconstructed from environmental samples and 122 retrieved from public databases. Phylogenetic analyses resolved the WOR-3 lineage into four subgroups (subgroup 1-4). Metabolic reconstruction revealed significant divergence of the carbon, sulfur, nitrogen, and hydrogen metabolism pathway

Metabolic and ecological responses of denitrifying consortia to different carbon source strategies under fluctuating C/N conditions.

Frequent fluctuations in the carbon-to-nitrogen (C/N) ratio of urban wastewater influent can undermine denitrification performance, posing challenges for stable nitrogen removal. Although supplying additional carbon sources is a recognized strategy to mitigate these issues, the underlying microbial interactions and metabolic reconfigurations triggered by changing C/N ratios remain incompletely understood. Here, we employed methanol, glycerol, sodium acetate, and glucose in long-term denitrification reactors and integrated denitrification kinetics, 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing, metagenomic

Ornithine-delta-aminotransferase is essential for arginine catabolism but not for proline biosynthesis.

BACKGROUND: Like many other plant species, Arabidopsis uses arginine (Arg) as a storage and transport form of nitrogen, and proline (Pro) as a compatible solute in the defence against abiotic stresses causing water deprivation. Arg catabolism produces ornithine (Orn) inside mitochondria, which was discussed controversially as a precursor for Pro biosynthesis, alternative to glutamate (Glu). RESULTS: We show here that ornithine-delta-aminotransferase (deltaOAT, At5g46180), the enzyme converting Orn to pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C), is localised in mitochondria and is essential for Arg cataboli

Sustainable mainstream deammonification by ion exchange and bioregeneration via partial nitritation/anammox.

The partial nitritation and anammox (PN/A) process has gained popularity for the treatment of nitrogen removal in wastewater due to significant energy savings and its potentially much lower CO2 footprint. However, the treatment of mainstream municipal wastewater by PN/A has been limited mainly due to its unsuitable composition. In this research, we apply ion exchange using a zeolite column to selectively remove and concentrate ammonium from mainstream municipal wastewater. After an absorption phase, the ion exchange column is regenerated using a brine solution. The ammonium rich brine is "bior

Tin-nitrogen coordination boosted lithium-storage sites and electrochemical properties in covalent-organic framework with layer-assembled hollow structure.

Covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) and related composites show an enormous potential in next-generation high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. However, the strategy to design functional covalent organic framework materials with nanoscale structure and controllable morphology faces serious challenges. In this work, a layer-assembled hollow microspherical structure (Sn@COF-hollow) based on the tin-nitrogen (Sn-N) coordination interaction is designed. Such carefully-crafted hollow structure with large exposed surface area and metal center decoration endows the Sn@COF-hollow electrode with mor

Effects of trichloroethylene stress on the microbiological characteristics of Mollisol.

Trichloroethylene (TCE), one of 129 kinds of priority pollutants, is the most common halogenated organic pollutant in the environment. To explore the changes in soil physicochemical properties and biological activities then clarify the effects of these factors on bacterial, fungal and actinomycetes communities in Mollisol under TCE stress is the significance of our research. The results indicated that when TCE concentration was greater than 10 mg kg-1, soil quality declined and soil decomposition of organic matter and cycling of mineral nutrients were inhibited through an effect on soil microb

Iron-enhanced rTCA cycle drives synergistic enhancement of inorganic carbon fixation and denitrification.

Iron-carbon autotrophic denitrification has shown potential for nitrogen removal from low-C/N wastewater. However, its application has been limited by slow Fe0 corrosion, increased alkalization, and insufficient inorganic carbon. CO2 induction represents a promising strategy for overcoming the above limitations. Here, a CO2 enhanced iron-carbon autotrophic denitrification process was established to elucidate how CO2 regulates iron corrosion, carbon metabolism, and denitrification. The results showed that the continuous CO2 supply maintained weakly acidic conditions (pH 6.0-6.5), accelerated Fe

Effectiveness of an alternating aerobic, anoxic/anaerobic strategy for maintaining biomass activity of BNR sludge during long-term starvation.

The effectiveness of an aerobic, anoxic/anaerobic strategy for maintaining the activity of activated sludge performing biological nitrogen and phosphorus removal during long-term starvation is investigated. A lab-scale sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating abattoir wastewater and achieving high-levels (>95%) of nitrogen, phosphorus and COD removal was used. The reactor was put twice into a so-called "sleeping mode" for a period of 5-6 weeks when the abattoir, where the wastewater was sourced, was closed down for annual maintenance. The "sleeping mode" operation consisted of 15 min aeration i

The enigma of progress in denitrification research.

Humans have dramatically increased the amount of reactive nitrogen (primarily ammonium, nitrogen oxides, and organically bound N) circulating in the biosphere and atmosphere, creating a wide array of desirable products (e.g., food production) and undesirable consequences (e.g., eutrophication of aquatic ecosystems and air pollution). Only when this reactive N is converted back to the chemically unreactive dinitrogen (N2) form, do these cascading effects of elevated reactive N cease to be of concern. Among the quantitatively most important processes for converting reactive N to N2 gas is the bi
