The effects of carbon dioxide on pulmonary mechanics in hyperventilating, normal volunteers.

Transpulmonary pressure, air flow, and end-tidal carbon dioxide levels were measured in normal human volunteers during hypocapnic, eucapnic, and hypercapnic hyperventilation. Respiratory rate and tidal volumes were well matched at a minute ventilation of 52 L. on three inspired gas mixtures: 21 per cent oxygen and 79 per cent nitrogen; 5 per cent carbon dioxide, 21 per cent oxygen and 74 per cent nitrogen; and 12 per cent carbon dioxide, 21 per cent oxygen and 67 per cent nitrogen. Respiratory rate, tidal volume, lung compliance, resistance, and resistive work per liter were calculated with a

Sulfinamide Synthesis Using Organometallic Reagents, DABSO, and Amines.

We report the synthesis of sulfinamides using organometallic reagents, a sulfur dioxide reagent, and nitrogen based-nucleophiles. The addition of an organometallic reagent to the commercially available sulfur dioxide surrogate, DABSO, generates a metal sulfinate which is reacted with thionyl chloride to form a sulfinyl chloride intermediate. Trapping the sulfinyl chlorides in situ with a variety of nitrogen nucleophiles delivers sulfinamides in 32-83% yields. Each stage of the process is performed at room temperature, and the total reaction time is only 1.5 h.

Spatial sensitivity analysis of COVID-19 infections concerning the satellite-based four air pollutants levels.

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19), first reported in late December 2019, has affected the lives of many people throughout the world. Significant studies have been conducted on this pandemic, some of which have addressed understanding the relationship between different air pollutants and confirmed cases. In this study, the effects of four air pollutants (carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide) were assessed from February 19 to March 22, 2020 to explore how they can affect COVID-19 contagion in Iran. The mean concentrations of air pollutants were extracted from Sentinel 5P d…

[ROLE OF MAST CELLS IN BRONCHIAL CONTRACTION IN NONALLERGIC OBSTRUCTIVE LUNG PATHOLOGY].

In model of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease induced in rats by 60-day intermittent exposure to nitrogen dioxide mast cells participation in the mechanism of bronchial smooth muscle contractile activity patterns was evaluated. Since the 31st day, one group of rats was inhaled with sodium cromoglycate every day before the nitrogen dioxide exposure to stabilize the mast cell membrane. The other group (control) hasn’t been treated. Isometric contraction of the bronchial isolated preparations in response to nerve or smooth muscle stimulation were determined. Inhibition of mast cell degranulat…

Acute asthma exacerbations and air pollutants in children living in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The incidence of childhood asthma, a common condition, is on the rise worldwide. Despite reductions in the emission of urban smoke, traffic pollution is now a major worldwide problem. Belfast, Northern Ireland, is an old industrial city with major pollution problems. In this study, the authors investigated the rates of acute asthma admissions to Belfast's major children's emergency department. The admissions were studied, relative to day-to-day fluctuations in thoracic particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, oxides of nitrogen, ozone, carbon monoxide, benzene, tempe…

Maternal Exposure to Air Pollution and Fetal Growth: Comparison of Three Exposure Modeling Approaches.

BACKGROUND: Maternal air pollution exposure has been associated with impaired fetal growth, yet most studies have overlooked microenvironmental and personal exposures. OBJECTIVES: To examine associations between maternal air pollution exposure in key microenvironments (home, workplace, and commuting route) and fetal growth (birth weight and small for gestational age) using three modeling approaches and personal, home-indoor, and home-outdoor monitoring. METHODS: We used data from 1024 pregnant women in the Barcelona Life Study Cohort (2018-2021). Exposure to nitrogen dioxide, black carbon, a…

Environmental issues in managing asthma.

Management of asthma requires attention to environmental exposures both indoors and outdoors. Americans spend most of their time indoors, where they have a greater ability to modify their environment. The indoor environment contains both pollutants (eg, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, secondhand smoke, and ozone) and allergens from furred pets, dust mites, cockroaches, rodents, and molds. Indoor particulate matter consists of particles generated from indoor sources such as cooking and cleaning activities, and particles that penetrate from the outdoors. Nitrogen dioxide sources include ga…

A Dynamic Analysis of Air Pollution: Implications of Economic Growth and Renewable Energy Consumption.

This paper examines how economic growth and renewable energy consumption are associated with air pollution using a dynamic panel approach. Focusing on several major air pollutants, namely, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and carbon monoxide, this paper tests the environmental Kuznets hypothesis and determines whether the use of renewable energy sources contributes to a reduction in air pollution. Data from a balanced panel of 145 countries for the period between 2000 and 2014 was used for the estimation of the dynamic panel model. The results of the dynamic panel model show

Impact of vehicular exhaust on ambient air quality of Rohtak city, India.

In the present study, ambient air quality of Rohtak city (Haryana) was monitored by High Volume Sampler. The selected parameters to judge the quality of air were Sulphur dioxide (SO2), Nitrogen dioxide NO), Ozone (O3) and Suspended particulate matters (SPM) which give a fair idea of pollution load carried by the air. The monitoring data were collected from six sites randomly selected in Rohtak city. Sulphur dioxide was found below the permissible limits of National Ambient Avo Quality Standards (NAAQS) at all the sites. Higher concentration of SO2 was observed during winter in comparison to su…

Effects of NO2 and SO2 on selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides by ammonia.

The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) characteristics of NO and NO(2) over V(2)O(5)-WO(3)-MnO(2)/TiO(2) catalyst using ammonia as a reducing agent have been determined in a fixed-bed reactor at 200-400 degrees C. The presence of NO(2) enhances the SCR activity at lower temperatures and the optimum ratio of NO(2)/NO(x) is found to be 0.5. During the SCR reactions, there are some side reactions occurred such as ammonia oxidation and N(2)O formation. At higher temperatures, the selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia and the nitrous oxide formation compete with the SCR reactions. The denitrifi

[National Observation Network for Air Pollutants. Measurements up to now--planned extensions].

Since 6 years a Swiss national emission monitoring network measures several air pollutants (sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, ozone, carbon monoxide, suspended particulates, particle deposition and precipitations) at 8 sites with different pollution levels (Dübendorf, Zürich, Basel, Sion, Payerne, Lugano, Tänikon, Jungfraujoch). The emission concentrations of sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and ozone exceed the limit values proposed by federal legislation at several sites, though the monitoring stations are not located at sites with extreme exposure. At present the network is extended for two …

Room-temperature reduction of NO2 in a Li-NO2 battery: a proof of concept.

Although considerable effort has been devoted to purifying nitrogen oxides (NOx), it is still challenging to effectively reduce NOx at room temperature and ambient pressure without catalysts. In this study, as a proof-of-concept, we have for the first time demonstrated the room-temperature reduction of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) using a rechargeable lithium-nitrogen dioxide (Li-NO2) battery. The battery shows a capacity of 884 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1 (an actual energy density of 666 Wh kg-1) and a promising electrochemical Faraday efficiency (FE) of 67%. The unique properties of Li-NO2 rechargeable b…

Transferring strongly reducing electrons to bidentate-adsorbed CO2 for efficient and selective formate photosynthesis.

The photocatalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into formate offers substantial economic value; however, it suffers from the inherent efficiency-selectivity trade-offs. Here, we introduce phthalocyanine polymer dots coexposed with defined phthalocyanine nitrogen (Npc) and phthalocyanine nitrogen-hydrogen (Npc─H) sites as promising photocatalysts, achieving synergistic enhancement in efficiency and selectivity. Npc sites act as electron nodes, directing photogenerated electrons from photosensitizers toward carbon dioxide-adsorbed phthalocyanine, boosting the reactive charge density by 6.5-fold.
