Transitions into practice: First patient care experiences of baccalaureate nursing students.

An essential component of the learning process for nursing and other disciplines in health professions education is the structuring of successful clinical experiences for beginning students. Cervical cancer screening practices of certified nurse-midwives in the United States.

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely certified nurse-midwives in the United States follow contemporary cervical cancer screening guidelines. A survey was sent to 264 randomly selected certified nurse-midwives. Survey questions included demographics and clinical scenarios addressing initiation, frequency, and cessation of screening. Responses were received from 60% of the sampled certified nurse-midwives who had valid mailing addresses; 127 were eligible for the analytic sample. Many nurse-midwives initiate cervical cancer screening earlier than guidelines recommend; 72% would

Using the Rx for Change tobacco curriculum in advanced practice nursing education.

In today's health care system driven by quality outcome indicators and performance care measures, it is essential for nurses to know how to intervene with tobacco-dependent patients. This article discusses pilot results from the "Rx for Change: Clinician Assisted Tobacco Cessation Curriculum" intervention conducted at Georgetown University School of Nursing and Health Studies using advanced practice students. The results reveal that 6 hours of tobacco-cessation training can increase knowledge and self-efficiency scores.

The disclosure of dyslexia in clinical practice: experiences of student nurses in the United Kingdom.

Heightened awareness and increasingly sophisticated psychological tests have seen a dramatic rise in the numbers of people diagnosed with dyslexia. Accordingly, there is a reported increase in the numbers of students with dyslexia entering Higher Education (HE) in the United Kingdom (UK) [Singleton, C.H., Chair, 1999. Dyslexia in higher education: policy, provision and practice. Report of the national working party on dyslexia in higher education. Clinical nurse specialist and evidence-based practice: managing anthracycline extravasation.

The clinical nurse specialist (CNS) is a clinical expert and client advocate in a specialized area of nursing practice, who directs efforts toward the improvement of nursing care. The CNS role is essential in closing the therapeutic gap between the development of science knowledge and its implementation in daily patient care situations. An essential step in developing evidence-based interventions is rating the quality of the evidence. An example of the CNS's role in improving care can be found in a response to an anthracycline extravasation. The clinical standard for extravasation was amended

The role of advanced practice psychiatric nurses in treating tobacco use and dependence.

Tobacco use is treatable and the benefits of smoking cessation are impressive, yet like other health care providers, psychiatric nurses have failed to consistently assess and treat tobacco use effectively. Tobacco use continues to cause illness, disability, and death at unprecedented rates. Nicotine addiction is drug abuse and it is a chronic disease and needs to be treated as such. There are clear health benefits to smoking cessation regardless of the age of smoking initiation or the age of smoking cessation. Advanced practice psychiatric nurses (APPNs) are in a unique position to make an imp

Nursing practice with incarcerated women: caring within mandated (sic) alienation.

The number of incarcerated women in the United States is increasing at an alarming rate. Incarcerated women often come from environments that are significant for violence, drug abuse, and a kind of chronic chaos. Many enter the penal system with acute and chronic physical problems along with mental health issues that have long gone unaddressed. From a critical hermeneutical perspective, professional and personal experience and dialogical engagement with other prison nurses are combined to examine the structure and development of caring practices behind prison walls. Analysis to date reveals th

An examination of nurses' practices when performing aseptic technique for wound dressings.

The purpose of this study was to establish if nurses' actions when carrying out 'aseptic technique' using the 'gloves technique' are simple and based on up-to-date knowledge and do not incur unnecessary wastage. A sample of convenience was used involving 21 trained nurses. Observation and formal interviews were used to collect quantitative and qualitative data. Results showed that not all nurses in the sample applied a 'simple aseptic technique'. The rationale for the practice of aseptic technique was not always research based, though other aspects of wound management were derived from researc

Infant colic and maternal mental health: nursing research and practice concerns.

This study compared the mental health of 12 mothers who had infants with colic to 12 mothers of infants without colic. Colic was defined as infant fussing/crying of at least 2 hours/day for at least 5 out of 7 days, infant cry high-pitched and pain-sounding, and maternal report of infant inconsolability. Mental health was operationalized as scores on the Profile of Mood States and the Symptom Checklist-90R. Mothers of infants with colic had multidimensional psychological distress; they reported more bodily dysfunction, fears, disordered thinking, depression, anxiety, fatigue, hostility, impuls

Palliative and end-of-life nursing care in Saudi Arabia: A systematic review of nursing practices, challenges, and patient-family outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Palliative and end-of-life (EOL) care is gaining increasing importance in Saudi Arabia due to the rising burden of chronic and life-limiting illnesses. Nurses play a central role in delivering comprehensive, culturally appropriate palliative care; however, their practices are influenced by educational preparation, institutional support, and sociocultural and religious contexts. To date, evidence on palliative nursing care in Saudi Arabia remains fragmented and insufficiently synthesized. AIM: This systematic review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on palliative and EOL nursin

Cultivating a rural nursing workforce: the impact of rural vs. urban education on nursing students' intentions for rural practice in Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Rural-urban maldistribution of health professionals continues to widen health inequities, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). In Nepal, nurses are central to frontline care in remote communities, yet "urban pull" forces and structural constraints undermine rural recruitment and retention. This study examined how training at a rural-embedded institution-Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS)-may shape final-year nursing students' intentions for rural/remote practice and the barriers they anticipate. METHODS: We used a two-site qualitative descriptive design
