Effects of a nine-month occupational intervention on health-related quality of life.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of vocationally outpatient oriented rehabilitation on an intervention group, compared with a control group that did not take part in the intervention. The groups were compared for health-related quality of life (HRQoL) by the quantitative indicator RAND 36. Data were obtained by a self-report at baseline and at nine months follow-up. Differences between base-line and follow-up were analyzed within group and between the groups. The study population consisted of 751 municipal employees aged between 26 and 64 years; an intervention with 463

Pericardial effusion as the first manifestation of occupational tuberculosis in a health care worker.

Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease and, apart from protecting patients, attention must be given to protecting the persons who come in contact with them, especially nurses and medical practitioners. A 43-year-old immunocompetent male nurse developed occupationally disseminated TB after contact with patients affected by active TB (culture positive) while working in a psychiatric hospital. The first manifestation of the disease was exudative pericarditis with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) confirmed two months after pericardiocentesis and evacuation of 1200 mL of pericardial effusion. Ma

The impact of smoking in the home on the health outcomes of non-smoker occupants in the UK.

Smoking in the home remains a key source of exposure to secondhand smoke for non-smokers, particularly since the UK public smoking ban in 2007. A systematic literature review was conducted to identify all UK evidence on the impact of secondhand smoke exposure in the home on health and behavioural outcomes in non-smoker occupants. MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library were searched to identify all relevant UK empirical studies from 2000 to June 2011. A qualitative overview of the evidence is presented. Exposure to secondhand smoke in UK homes was found to be associated with serious negative

Working in light vehicles--a review and conceptual model for occupational health and safety.

Occupational light vehicle (OLV) use is the leading cause of work related traumatic deaths in Westernised countries. Previous research has focused primarily on narrow contexts of OLV-use such as corporate fleet vehicles. We have proposed a comprehensive systems model for OLV-use to provide a framework for identifying research needs and proposing policy and practice interventions. This model presents the worker as the locus of injury at the centre of work- and road-related determinants of injury. Using this model, we reviewed existing knowledge and found most studies focused only on company car

Delivery Riders at the Crossroads of Occupational Health, Climate Change, and Algorithmic Management.

Delivery riders have become a defining workforce of contemporary urban economies, yet existing occupational health frameworks remain poorly adapted to the realities of platform-mediated work. This editorial proposes a shift from static, factor-based models of risk toward a dynamic and cumulative perspective, and provides a comparative classification of regulatory approaches worldwide, highlighting how jurisdictions are addressing, or failing to address, the occupational risks of platform work. Riders operate at the intersection of three interacting domains: algorithmic management, environmenta…

The impact of military occupational combustion smoke inhalation on neuroinflammation and brain health.

Airborne combustion emissions from military burn pits, wildfires, and urban/industrial sources are increasingly recognized as a component of the neurotoxic exposome, with potential consequences extending beyond cardiopulmonary disease to brain health. These aerosols comprise heterogeneous mixtures of fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM₂.₅/PM₀.₁), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, volatile organic compounds, metals, and reactive gases whose composition varies with fuel type, combustion efficiency, and atmospheric aging. Evidence from experimental models, epidemiology, and exposed human co

Fibromyalgia, gender, and employment: unveiling an overlooked reality in occupational health in Chile.

Fibromyalgia is a multifactorial syndrome characterized by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, and cognitive dysfunction that primarily affects women of working age. Because it lacks biological markers and its diagnosis is largely based on clinical criteria, fibromyalgia has been subject to gender biases that tend to minimize its symptoms and question the legitimacy of the condition. This delegitimization affects the employment trajectories of women with fibromyalgia, who experience higher rates of unemployment, withdrawal from employment, and discrimination. Studies indicate that only a minorit

Environmental and occupational exposure to erionite and related health risks: progress and prospects.

OBJECTIVES: Erionite, a naturally occurring fibrous zeolite classified as a human carcinogen, is believed to be more potent than asbestos in causing mesothelioma. However, unlike asbestos, erionite has rarely been used for commercial purposes and, as a result, knowledge about exposure pathways is limited. This paper provides a narrative review of the current knowledge regarding the associations between erionite exposure, health effects and exposure circumstances. METHODS: Medline/PubMed and Scopus were systematically searched up to the end of 2024 using keywords related to erionite exposure a

The importance of health management and maintenance occupations while homeless: A case study.

Life expectancy for persons experiencing homelessness (PEH) is two decades lower than the general population; often, middle-aged adults experience such debilitating health issues due to homelessness that their physical bodies resemble that of a geriatric population. Environmental barriers limiting the ability for PEH to follow medical recommendations and access healthcare often result in decreased health outcomes for this population. The need to participate in survival occupations can reduce time spent in occupations related to health and wellness. This article presents a case study to demonst

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration at 50: Protecting Workers in a Changing Economy.

The passage of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 brought unprecedented changes in US workplaces, and the activities of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) have contributed to a significant reduction in work-related deaths, injuries, and illnesses. Despite this, millions of workers are injured annually, and thousands killed. To reduce the toll, OSHA needs greater resources, a new standard-setting process, increased civil and criminal penalties, full coverage for all workers, and stronger whistleblower protections. Workers should not be injured or made sick by th
