Biomaterials for reconstruction of the internal orbit.

Orbital floor injuries, alone or combination with other facial fractures, are one of the most commonly encountered midface fractures. Techniques for orbital reconstruction have migrated away from autogenous bone grafts to well-tolerated alloplasts, such as titanium and Medpor. Material for reconstructing the orbit can then be selected based on requirements of the defect matched to the mechanical properties of the material. Material selection is largely and ultimately dependent upon surgeon preference.

Characteristics of pellet injuries to the orbit.

PURPOSE: To investigate the features of orbital injuries by pellets fired from the front. DESIGN: Retrospective, 4 cases of pellet injuries. METHODS: Five orbits of 4 patients who sustained pellet injuries received from the front were reviewed retrospectively. The course of injury and results were assessed. Radiological examinations were reviewed. The patients were evaluated between December 1996 and June 2004. RESULTS: Five orbits of 4 patients sustained injuries caused by pellets fired from an anterior direction. The globe in the injured orbit was intact in 2 cases. Severe loss of vision …

Primary conjunctival epithelial cyst of the orbit.

BACKGROUND: A primary conjunctival epithelial cyst is an uncommon lesion that consists of nonkeratized, stratified squamous epithelium without dermal appendages. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 57-year-old woman presented with a soft mass in the anterior portion of the nasal orbit. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a rounded, cystic lesion between the right eye and the nasal bone. Histopathological examination following complete surgical excision disclosed a conjunctival epithelial cyst lined by nonkeratinized cuboidal epithelium without goblet cells and adnexal structures. CONCLUSIO…

[Congenital mature teratoma of the right orbit].

BACKGROUND: Teratomas are congenital embryonic tumours composed of a wide diversity of tissues derived from the three germinal layers (ectoderm, mesoderm, endoderm). Located in the orbit they endanger the eye and the bony structures. The main goal of treatment is preservation of the eye. In most cases this will not be feasible. CASE REPORT: A newborn boy was admitted to our hospital because of a prenatally known protrusion of the right globe. On examination the baby had a large retrobulbar orbital tumour, which displaced the globe ventrally. On MRI the tumour had an extent of 5 cm. It comprom…

[Vascular tumours and malformation of the orbit].

Vascular diseases are an important part of orbital pathology. We describe vascular tumours of the orbit and vascular diseases with repercussion on the orbit, from intra or extra orbital origin. The classification of these abnormalities is difficult and several terms are used to describe the same histological entity. The objective of this work is, using the current classification, to illustrate the different imaging aspects of the most frequent vascular diseases of the orbit.

The acute orbit: etiology, diagnosis, and therapy.

PURPOSE: Extension of dental abscesses to distant areas of the head and neck has been repeatedly reported in the medical literature. Subsequent involvement of the orbit still remains a rarity, resulting in protracted onset of therapy because of inaccurate diagnosis. Considering the possible lasting damage that can result from insufficient therapy, like blindness or even death, the need to extensively educate practicing physicians becomes evident. MATERIALS AND METHODS: With the help of a comprehensive review of the medical literature underlined with a clinical case, the etiology, diagnosis, a…

Sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma of the orbit.

Sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma or microcystic adnexal carcinoma is a rare, aggressive and locally destructive sweat gland malignancy. It is difficult to diagnose clinically and histologically and as such is probably under-recognized. Late recognition is common and is associated with extensive tissue loss. Local extension into the orbit from periorbital cutaneous lesions is documented, necessitating exenteration for adequate tumor clearance. We report a case of orbital sclerosing sweat duct carcinoma without a clinically evident cutaneous lesion, which required exenteration in a patient with n…

Pediatric tumors of the eye and orbit.

Most ocular and orbital tumors of childhood are distinct from tumors that occur in adults. Many are congenital with early presentations. Most pediatric orbital tumors are benign; developmental cysts comprise half of orbital cases, with capillary hemangioma being the second most common orbital tumor. The most common orbital malignancy is rhabdomyosarcoma. The most common intraocular malignant lesion is retinoblastoma. Choroidal melanoma, which is common in adults, is extremely rare in children. The orbit is the most common location for metastases in children, whereas the choroid is the predomin…

Growth of the fetal lens and orbit.

OBJECTIVES: To present normal lens and orbital measurement ranges by gestational age. METHODS: Three hundred and thirty-five women with uneventful pregnancies were evaluated from the 15th to the 40th week of gestation. Lens and orbital measurements were added to routine biometric measurements for normal fetuses. RESULTS: A strong linear correlation was observed between gestational age (GA) and lens diameter (R(2)=0.89; P<0.0001), circumference (R(2)=0.89; P<0.0001), and surface (R(2)=0.90; P<0.0001). A linear correlation was also found between GA and orbital diameter (R(2)=0.92; P<0.0001), c…

Fibrous histiocytoma of orbit: a case report.

A fifty year male (K.S.) presented with protrusion (Proptosis) of left eye which was gradually increasing in size for the last one year. The swelling was accompanied by pain for the last fifteen days. Preoperative X-ray & computed tomography showed erosion of frontal sinus & roof of maxillary sinus. Clinical diagnosis of a malignant tumour of eye was made & enucleation of the left eye, along with the mass was done. The specimen was received in the pathology department on 16.9.98. Grossly, encapsulated mass attached with the intact eye ball was received. The mass measured 5x3x2.5 cms. Microscop

Ectopic lacrimal gland cyst of the orbit.

Lacrimal duct cysts are not common. It is extremely rare when a lacrimal duct cyst and an ectopic lacrimal gland develop in the orbital cavity. A unique case of an ectopic lacrimal gland cyst of the orbit is presented. A 33-year-old man had a palpable mass above the inferior medial orbital rim for nearly two years. An ocular examination was normal except for a movable, firm mass found in the anterior nasal inferior orbit of the right eye. An echogram revealed a homogeneous, hypoechoic cystic mass. Computed tomography of the orbit showed a well-encapsulated lesion in the lower orbit of the righ…

[Invasive aspergillosis of the orbit in immunocompetence].

BACKGROUND: An isolated aspergillosis of the sphenoidal sinus is a difficult diagnosis because the often misleading clinical symptoms of this rare disease can develop late and first be presented to the ophthalmologist. Because of this even life-threatening disease in normally immunodeficient patients, fast diagnostics and treatment is indicated. CASE REPORT: We report about an immunocompetent man to suffer from an invasive aspergillosis involving the sphenoidal sinus after external operation of a mucocele. Aspergillus infiltrated the right orbit by bone erosion and led to an acute loss of vis…
