National health objectives for the year 2000: the demographic impact of health promotion and disease prevention.

BACKGROUND: The national objectives in Healthy People 2000, drafted by health professionals aware of currently available public health interventions, represent a wealth of information about near-term future mortality and morbidity. METHODS: Life table methods were used to calculate the impact of projected changes in mortality and activity limitation rates on life expectancy and expected disability years. RESULTS: Meeting the mortality objectives would increase life expectancy at birth by 1.5 to 2.1 years, raising life expectancy to 76.6 to 77.2 years. In addition, meeting the target for disa

The Experiences and Perceptions of Organizational Support Among Chinese Nurses Following Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are highly prevalent among nurses in China and can affect nurses' health, work ability, professional identity, and retention. Although Organizational Support Theory suggests that perceived organizational support shapes employees' post-injury attitudes and behaviours, little qualitative evidence explains how Chinese nurses interpret organizational responses after WMSDs, especially in the context of high clinical workloads and staffing pressure. OBJECTIVE(S): To explore and describe the experiences and perceptions of organizational supp

Bringing lung cancer above ground through storytelling: Creating a lung cancer advocacy network.

OBJECTIVE: We developed a conceptual framework for creating lung cancer advocacy networks (LCANs) that engaged diverse advocates with complex relationships to lung cancer (LC) across disciplinary settings to address the challenges associated with the medical care and social complexity of LC. METHODS: This qualitative research used participatory action research and grounded theory methods to construct a conceptual framework for LCAN development. RESULTS: Twenty-four LC advocates across disciplines participated in 7 focus groups and 4 interviews. Four major themes and a singular subtheme emerg

Physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services: the social systems constraining an innovative practice.

BACKGROUND: A person-centered and collaborative practice is considered crucial in contemporary physiotherapy. These ideals are often embraced in theory but are difficult to put into practice. As problems and solutions are related, understanding and refining theory on practical problems can close the knowing-doing gap and link the problem to the development of possible solutions. OBJECTIVE: To explore the challenges with providing physiotherapy as part of collaborative and person-centered rehabilitation services. METHODS: This article reports on an all-day interactive workshop with eight focu

A latent profile analysis of child maltreatment among at-risk youth gang members: Associations with violent delinquency, non-violent delinquency, and gang organizational structures.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between child maltreatment and later delinquency is an enduring concern worldwide. However, the maltreatment-delinquency relationship is relatively underexplored in youth gang populations. Consequently, to date, studies have not examined typologies of maltreatment and their associations with violent delinquency, non-violent delinquency, and gang organizational structures. OBJECTIVE: First, to identify the characteristics of subgroups of youth gang members who varied in abuse type and severity within type. Second, to determine in what ways the profiles differed in

Impacts of morally distressing experiences on the mental health of Canadian health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Research is urgently needed to understand health care workers' (HCWs') experiences of moral-ethical dilemmas encountered throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, and their associations with organizational perceptions and personal well-being. This research is important to prevent long-term moral and psychological distress and to ensure that workers can optimally provide health services. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate associations between workplace experiences during COVID-19, moral distress, and the psychological well-being of Canadian HCWs. Progress towards the Millennium Development Goals in a community of extreme poverty: local vs. national disparities in Peru.

OBJECTIVES: Standard indicators are being used worldwide to track progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). These are usually at country level and do not accurately reflect within-country variability of progress towards the targets. This may lead to lack of attention and under-resourcing of the most vulnerable populations. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare selected standard MDG indicators at country level and community level in Peru. METHODS: As MDG indicators we selected: (i) moderate to severe and severe underweight in children under 5 years old

Health promotion: Alcohol and drug misuse prevention.

Currently, average apparent consumption of alcohol for all persons older than 14 is 10 percent higher than 10 years ago, and is equivalent to about 2.75 gallons of ethanol per person per year. Approximately 10 million adult Americans (i.e., 7 percent of those 18 or older) can be considered problem drinkers. Youthful problem drinkers, aged 14 to 17, are estimated to number more than 3 million and comprise 19 percent of this age group. In addition to the social costs, the economic costs to society as a result of alcohol misuse are substantial--an estimated +49.4 billion in 1977. Ten percent of a

Digital language measures capture episodic memory disruptions in people with human immunodeficiency virus: A machine learning study.

Objective: Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) often affects episodic memory. Yet, standard measures of this domain are derived from clinicians' simple counts of recalled and omitted pieces of information, undermining robustness, informativeness, and scalability. Here, we present an automated natural language processing (NLP) approach that tackles such limitations. Methods: We recruited 92 participants (50 people living with HIV and 42 controls), who performed a story retelling task. Using NLP tools, we compared the retellings and the original story in terms of verbosity, semantic acuity, and o

Relentless, aggressive, and pervasive: Exploring gender minimization and sexual abuse experienced by women ex-military veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Contextually embedded and sanctioned gender minimization and sexual abuse toward female personnel within the military appears widespread. Left unabated, mental health complications of female personnel will challenge care responsibilities for military organizations. METHOD: Interview data from six ex-military women that sought positive and negative interpretations of gender minimization and sexual abuse while in the military was analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis. RESULTS: Analysis revealed two superordinate themes: (a) Immature Culture, and (b) Ejection and Gr

Evaluation and development of potentially better practices for the prevention of brain hemorrhage and ischemic brain injury in very low birth weight infants.

OBJECTIVE: Neonatal care providers from 5 institutions formed a multidisciplinary focus group with the purpose of identifying potentially better practices, the implementation of which would lead to a reduction in the incidence of intracranial hemorrhage and periventricular leukomalacia in very low birth weight infants. METHODS: Practices were analyzed, 4 benchmark neonatal intensive care units were identified and evaluated, and the literature was assessed using an evidence-based approach. The work was also reviewed by a nationally respected expert. RESULTS: Ten potentially better clinical pr

Evaluating pediatric emergency knowledge mobilization resources for Canadian healthcare providers: a concurrent triangulation mixed-methods usability study.

OBJECTIVES: In Canada, approximately 85% of pediatric emergency visits occur in general emergency departments lacking specialized pediatric resources. Through a national co-developed knowledge mobilization strategy, the Translating Emergency Knowledge for Kids (TREKK) network creates evidence-based resources to bridge this gap. This study evaluated the usability of TREKK resources as perceived by healthcare providers. METHODS: Between February 2023 and February 2024, a concurrent triangulation mixed-methods design was used to evaluate eight pediatric clinical resources across seven topics (di
