The sensitivity/resistance of Pseudomonas spp. isolated from rabbits gastrointestinal tract and faeces to antibiotics, enterocins and herbal extracts was tested in this study. The counts of Pseudomonas-like bacteria were higher in faeces (3.23-6.16 log(10) CFU/mL/g) than in caecum (1.36-4.08 log(10) CFU/mL/g). Nineteen isolates (16 faecal, 3 caecal) were oxidase positive. The strains were allotted by phenotypization to Pseudomonas spp., Brevundimonas diminuta and Brevundimonasvesicularis. High percentage of resistant strains was observed to all antibiotics. The tested strains were more suscept

The ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor is considered as a major threat to honey bees (Apis mellifera) worldwide, contributing significantly to colony losses. Conventional synthetic acaricides are increasingly ineffective due to resistance and the harmful residues they leave in hive products. This study evaluates the varroacidal activity and safety of essential oils (EOs) extracted from Moroccan (Thymus satureioides, Thymus pallidus) and Turkish (Origanum minutiflorum, Plantago major) plants. EO compositions were characterized by GC-MS, and their varroacidal activity was assessed via in vitro

Treatment of liver injury induced by various toxicants represents a serious clinical challenge. Here, we utilized the ability of natural agents to inhibit microsomal lipid peroxidation (LPO) as the in-vitro screening paradigm for selecting efficacious tissue-protective combinations of cooperatively acting medicinal plants. Based on screening of 70 water-ethanol extracts obtained from different parts of 65 plants we prepared a highly active phytocomposition (PC-1) containing oregano (Origanum vulgare), wild thyme (Thymus serpyllum) and coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) aerial parts, valerian (Valer

Parascaris sp. is the only ascarid parasitic nematode in equids and one of the most threatening infectious organisms in horses. Only a limited number of compounds are available for treatment of horse helminthiasis, and Parascaris sp. worms have developed resistance to the three major anthelmintic families. In order to overcome the appearance of resistance, there is an urgent need for new therapeutic strategies. The active ingredients of herbal essential oils are potentially effective antiparasitic drugs. Carvacrol is one of the principal chemicals of essential oil from Origanum, Thymus, Corido

Using antibiotics as feed additives have been successively banned worldwide from 1986; therefore, it is an urgent task to finding safe and effective alternatives. As natural products of plant origin, essential oils (EOs) are an outstanding option due to their reported bioactivity. In this research, ten EOs of Labiatae species were extracted by steam distillation and its chemical constituents were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). A total of 123 chemical compounds, including alkenes, phenols, aldehydes and ketones, were identified. The results of antioxidant activity c

Anisakiasis is common in countries where raw or incompletely cooked marine fish are consumed. Currently, effective therapeutic methods to treat anisakiasis are unavailable. A recent study found that wood creosote inactivates the movement of Anisakis species. Essential oil of Origanum compactum containing carvacrol and thymol, which are similar to the constituents of wood creosote, was reported to inactivate Anisakis by inhibiting its acetylcholinesterase. We examined whether wood creosote can also inhibit acetylcholinesterase. We examined the effect of components of wood creosote using the sam

Prophylactic use of antibiotics in poultry diets has been identified as a problematic practice because of its potential to exacerbate the spread of antibiotic resistance to human pathogens. A range of countries have opted to completely ban the use of antibiotics in animal feed. The animal production industries are looking for alternative ways to effectively control pathogens while providing the performance benefits previously secured by antibiotics in feed. Here, we present evidence that oregano (Origanum vulgare) could be a potential alternative for pathogen control in the poultry industry. B

CONTEXT: Anisakis Dujardin 1845 (Anisakidae) nematodes can cause gastrointestinal and allergic diseases when humans eat raw or undercooked seafood containing larvae. There is currently no drug available in the market against this parasitic disease, and the study of plant-derived molecules could be useful in the discovery of effective compounds.
OBJECTIVE: This research assesses the biocidal activity of a range of essential oils (EOs) from some Mediterranean plants against larvae found in the musculature of fresh fish.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: EOs composition was analyzed by gas chromatography-
