Factors related to stability following the surgical correction of skeletal open bite.

OBJECTIVES: If a skeletal anterior open bite malocclusion is treated by orthognathic surgery directed only at the mandible, the lower jaw is repositioned upward in a counter-clockwise rotation. However, this procedure has a high risk of relapse. In the present study, the key factors associated with post-surgical stability of corrected skeletal anterior open bite malocclusions were investigated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighteen orthognathic patients were subjected to cephalometric analysis to assess the dental and skeletal changes following mandibular surgery for the correction of an anterior op

A diagnostic and treatment planning checklist for vertical problems in orthodontic patients.

Vertical discrepancies in orthodontics represent a complex and multifactorial diagnostic challenge. Traditional approaches often lack a consistent correlation between facial patterns, overbite, and occlusal vertical dimension, limiting a comprehensive treatment planning. This article proposes a diagnostic checklist structured around five key factors-lower anterior facial height, incisor display at rest, posterior dental height, overbite, and occlusal wear-to assess vertical problems across macro-, mini-, and microesthetic levels. The amount of incisor display at rest serves as the guiding para

Restoring teeth following crown lengthening procedures.

Crown lengthening procedures are often necessary to successfully restore teeth that have been mutilated at or below the level of the bone crest. Forced eruption is preferred to surgical removal of supporting alveolar bone, since forced eruption preserves the biologic width, maintains esthetics, and at the same time exposes sound tooth structure for the placement of restorative margins. To properly construct a crown, the minimal distance from the alveolar crest to the coronal extent of sound tooth structure should be 4 mm. Before initiation of forced eruption, the restorability of the root afte

Effectiveness and predictability of treatment with clear orthodontic aligners: A scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: In an ideal clinical setting, orthodontic therapy with clear aligners (CA) should improve the patients' initial malocclusion and must guarantee equivalence between the results predicted and those obtained clinically to be considered an effective treatment. Therefore, this scoping review aimed to identify the orthodontic literature concerning the effectiveness and predictability of CA treatments. METHODS: A systematic computerized search was performed in 3 databases: PubMed, Scopus, and Embase. Inclusion criteria selected observational and clinical studies performed in at least 1

True vertical changes in patients with skeletal class III malocclusion after nonsurgical orthodontic treatment-a retrospective study comparing different vertical facial patterns.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Rotating mandible backward downward is one of the treatment options in non-surgical skeletal class III malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to compare the true vertical changes after camouflage orthodontic treatment of adult patients with skeletal class III malocclusion categorized by vertical facial type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 27 adult patients (age >18 years) with skeletal class III malocclusion (ANB<1°) who underwent nonsurgical orthodontic treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital. The patients were divided into the low-ang

Alignment of a buccally displaced maxillary canine in the late mixed dentition with a modified utility arch: a patient report.

Maxillary canines and first molars are the most common ectopic teeth in young people. Ectopic buccal eruption of maxillary canines is strongly associated with lack of space or crowding in the dental arch. This report demonstrates the management of a buccally erupted maxillary canine in an 11-year, 8-month-old boy without sufficient space. The patient had a mostly dental Class II occlusion and was in the late mixed dentition, and the root development of his canines was consistent with his dental age. To correct the distal occlusion and gain space in the maxillary arch for the eruption of both c

Interdisciplinary management of an adolescent patient with a severely impacted mandibular canine.

Impacted mandibular canines often result in a variety of clinical dilemmas. Orthodontic disimpaction of severely displaced mandibular canines may be extremely challenging and associated with significant patient discomfort and a high risk of iatrogenic damage. This case report demonstrates the interdisciplinary management of a horizontally impacted permanent mandibular canine, utilising a combination of three-dimensional radiology, biomodel fabrication and subsequent endodontic treatment. © 2024 Australian Dental Association.

An in vitro study evaluating the effect of ferrule design on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular premolars after simulated crown lengthening or forced eruption methods.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of ferrule design on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated mandibular first premolars after simulated crown lengthening and orthodontic forced eruption methods restored with a fiber post-and-core system. METHODS: Forty extracted and endodontically treated mandibular first premolars were decoronated to create lingual-to-buccal oblique residual root models, with a 2.0 mm height of the lingual dentine wall coronal to the cemento-enamel junction, and the height of buccal surface at the cemento-enamel junction. Impaction of both maxillary central incisors and a canine.

This case report describes the treatment of a 14-year-old adolescent patient who had 2 impacted maxillary central incisors with distoangular root dilacerations. He also had an impacted maxillary left canine, with the crown completely overlapping the root of the lateral incisor, and insufficient space. The general dentist referred this patient because the maxillary central incisors had still not erupted 2 years after extraction of the retained deciduous incisors. A unilateral expander with a modified vestibular arch and an attachment spring on the right side was used to correct the posterior cr

Identical unerupted maxillary incisors in monozygotic twins.

Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary tooth found in the premaxilla. It might be discovered by the orthodontist by chance on a radiograph or as the cause of an unerupted maxillary central incisor. The genetic transmission of supernumerary and impacted teeth is poorly understood. The occurrence of identical unerupted maxillary central incisors and mesiodentes in monozygotic twins suggests that genetic factors might influence the etiology of this problem. In this case report, we discuss the treatment of unerupted maxillary permanent incisors caused by mesiodentes in monozygotic twin

Orthodontic treatment in a patient with cleidocranial dysostosis.

Cleidocranial dysostosis is a rare congenital skeletal disorder, associated with clavicular hypoplasia or aplasia, delayed closure of cranial fontanels, brachycephalic skull, delayed exfoliation of primary dentition, eruption of permanent teeth, and multiple supernumerary and morphologic abnormalities of the maxilla and mandible. The disorder is caused by mutation in the CBFA1 gene, on the short arm of chromosome 6p21. The prevalence of cleidocranial dysostosis is estimated one per million, without sex or ethnic group predilection. The purpose of this paper is to describe the orthodontic treat

Maxillary canine impactions related to impacted central incisors: two case reports.

AIM: The purpose of this case report is to describe the combined surgical and orthodontic treatment of two cases with an impacted maxillary central incisor and canine in the same quadrant and to discuss the causal relationship between them. BACKGROUND: The most common causes of canine impactions are usually the result of one or more factors such as a long path of eruption, tooth size-arch length discrepancies, abnormal position of the tooth bud, prolonged retention or early loss of the deciduous canine, trauma, the presence of an alveolar cleft, ankylosis, cystic or neoplastic formation, dila

Sequelae of iatrogenic periodontal destruction associated with elastics and permanent incisors: literature review and report of 3 cases.

The purpose of this paper was to report 3 cases of localized aggressive periodontal bone destruction related to improper use of orthodontic elastic bands to close diastemas in permanent anterior teeth and to compare the results to previous studies. Some common signs and symptoms of this particular destruction were observed with these patients that had been previously reported when the comparisons of these cases were made. The patients usually experienced a painful sensation, and an isolated pyogenic-like granuloma appeared at the interdental area. Radiographs revealed localized periodontal des

Crown-root reattachment of a severe subgingival tooth fracture: a 15-month periodontal evaluation.

Traumatic tooth fractures represent an intriguing challenge for clinicians, particularly when they involve the anterior region of the maxilla. In such situations, esthetic, psychosocial, functional, and therapeutic problems may have a negative effect on the patient's quality of life. In addition, fractures that involve the biologic width of the periodontium are even more difficult to treat. An interdisciplinary approach based on crown lengthening with or without orthodontic extrusion and the definitive prosthetic rehabilitation represent the standard modality of treatment for these conditions …

Clinical and histological alterations in the surrounding periodontium of dog's teeth submitted for an intrusive luxation.

The clinical and histological alterations on periodontium of dog's teeth after an intrusion luxation was analyzed. An impact device was used on 12 teeth of six adult dogs with the purpose of making a dislocation on the long axis of these teeth. Of the teeth that suffer intrusion luxation, two did not receive treatment and ten were replaced by orthodontic extrusion with activated springs of 100 gf. The traction was initiated either immediately after the trauma or 7 days later. Observation time was 40 days. Endodontic therapy with calcium hydroxide was performed on the fourteenth day after the i…

Predictability of anterior open bite treatment with Invisalign.

INTRODUCTION: Anterior open bite correction with Invisalign has been claimed to have relatively good predictability because of the proposed function of clear aligners to function as occlusal bite-blocks, limiting extrusion of the posterior teeth or possibly even intruding posterior teeth. This proposal, however, remains relatively unsubstantiated. The objective of this study was to investigate and determine the accuracy of Invisalign treatment in correcting anterior open bite by comparing the predicted outcome from ClinCheck to the achieved outcome for the initial aligner sequence. METHODS: A
