Cephalometric effects of the Jones Jig appliance followed by fixed appliances in Class II malocclusion treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to cephalometrically assess the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of Class II malocclusion treatment performed with the Jones Jig appliance followed by fixed appliances. METHODS: The sample comprised 25 patients with Class II malocclusion treated with the Jones Jig appliance followed by fixed appliances, at a mean initial age of 12.90 years old. The mean time of the entire orthodontic treatment was 3.89 years. The distalization phase lasted for 0.85 years, after which the fixed appliance was used for 3.04 years. Cephalograms were used at initial (T1), pos

Combined orthodontic-orthopedic approach: a second choice in some surgical cases.

The present case involves the treatment of a 21-year-old speech therapy student presenting a severe Class II/I occlusion with marked oral dysfunction handicapping her profession. In addition to a multibond appliance, the following orthopedic adjuncts were used sequentially: cervical headgear, a bimaxillary functional appliance (Biopart), a provisional occlusal plane, and composite reshaping of canine crowns. The survey of 8 years after recovery suggests that this technique is a viable alternative when patients do not opt for surgery.

Treatment of impacted or retained second molars with the miniscrew-supported pole technique: a prospective follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: Eruption disturbances of permanent molars are uncommon; however, it is important to treat them as soon as they are diagnosed. The main objective was to analyze the effectiveness of the "miniscrew-supported pole technique," a surgically assisted orthodontic procedure to force the eruption of impacted/retained second molars (M2s) when there are indicators of complex molar inclusion. An observational prospective study was carried out during a 2-year period. Sociodemographic, clinical and low-dose scanner variables were taken at baseline (T0). Follow-up variables (T1) were the time bet

Skeletal Class lll severe openbite treatment using implant anchorage.

A female patient with a skeletal Class III severe anterior openbite was treated using miniplates as the anchorage. The patient was 15 years and 10 months of age when she reported to our university hospital with a chief complaint of anterior openbite and reversed occlusion. The patient had an anterior openbite with an overjet of -3.0 mm and overbite of -5.0 mm and a Class III molar relationship. The cephalometric analysis showed a skeletal Class III relationship (ANB 0 degrees ). After the extraction of the bilateral mandibular third molars, miniplates were placed in the mandibular external obl

Class III bilateral posterior crossbite with three horizontally impacted maxillary anterior teeth.

What's in a pretty face? In our world, unfortunately, too much. As orthodontists our goal should be to provide our patients with a stable, functional occlusion. Consider, however, the importance of changing our patients' future by significantly improving their facial esthetics. The combination of a very narrow maxillary arch, three absent upper left incisors, and a protrusive lower jaw provide a platform for dramatic improvement in our patients' facial esthetics.

Orthodontic movement into bone defects augmented with bovine bone mineral and fibrin sealer: a reentry case report.

Periodontal disease can lead to migration of anterior teeth with the presence of infrabony defects. This creates the opportunity for treating such patients with a combined orthodontic-periodontic treatment. In the presented clinical case, an adult periodontal patient with extrusion of the maxillary central incisors and an infrabony defect on their lingual aspects was treated. During the surgical procedure, the bone defects were augmented with a combination of porous bovine bone mineral (Bio-Oss) and a fibrin-fibronectin sealing system (Tissucol). Ten days after surgery, the active orthodontic

Secondary bonegrafting in unilateral cleft lip palate patients: indications and treatment procedure.

A consecutive series of 62 complete unilateral cleft lip and palate patients were investigated with respect to indication for a secondary bone grafting. 2 major indications for secondary bone grafting were established. One was a symptomatic oro-nasal fistula, the other one being a bony defect in the alveolar process, which could impair orthodontic treatment and prosthodontic rehabilitation in the cleft area. The average age for bonegrafting was 12 years. After surgery, fistula-related discomfort was eliminated and speech disorders were drastically reduced. Orthodontic uprighting of teeth and c

Distalization of mandibular molar with iatrogenic root fracture in Class III malocclusion: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Placement of interradicular orthodontic miniscrews poses a potential risk of root damage, including superficial root contact and root fracture. This case report describes the iatrogenic root-injured tooth movement of a 27-year-old male with skeletal Class III malocclusion as nonsurgical orthodontic treatment. CASE PRESENTATION: An orthodontic miniscrew between the mandibular right first and second molars perforated the distal root of the mandibular first molar. A root fracture was discovered 4 months after miniscrew placement. Owing to the potential risk of ankylosis related to su

A case report of cleidocranial dysplasia: A noninvasive approach.

Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD) is a rare bone disorder. The main dental features are the presence of multiple retained deciduous teeth and supernumerary teeth, as well as unerupted permanent teeth. To date, CCD is managed by a combination approach, which consists of the extraction of deciduous and supernumerary teeth, followed by orthodontic traction of unerupted permanent teeth. This case highlights the management of a girl with CCD, who refused the recommended protocol. A 15-year-old Malay female presented with a complaint of retained deciduous teeth. Intraoral examination revealed multiple r

Bone scintigraphy of human temporomandibular joints during Herbst treatment: a case report.

Bone scintigraphy results were compared with changes shown on orthopantomographic radiographs in a patient with facial asymmetry, before, during, and after Herbst treatment, and followed up with control of growth activity in the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) after long-term retention. The present study showed that new bone formation (modelling) was initiated asymmetrically in TMJs during treatment. The results indicate that late development of right/left asymmetry in the occlusion can be corrected and normalized using the Herbst appliance therapy, stimulating a differentiated 'catch up' grow

Treatment of a patient with multiple impacted teeth.

An impacted or missing permanent tooth can add significant complications to an otherwise straightforward case. When multiple impacted teeth are present, the case complexity increases further. Developing a treatment sequence, determining appropriate anchorage, and planning and executing sound biomechanics can be a challenge. The following case report illustrates a patient reportedly diagnosed with mild scleroderma as an adolescent. He presented for orthodontic treatment as an adult with multiple retained primary teeth and multiple impacted teeth. Diagnosis, treatment planning, and various metho

Disturbed eruption of the permanent lower second molar: treatment and results.

To facilitate treatment of impacted lower second molars, different modes of treatment were studied retrospectively and the results related to the inclination and the degree of impaction of the tooth. Seventy-seven referred patients were treated with one of three basic methods: denudation of the second molar, orthodontics, or extraction of a molar. The methods were often combined, with a total of seventeen treatment combinations applied. Of the 95 impacted teeth, 68 percent were treated successfully, 21 percent acceptably, and 11 percent unsuccessfully. Irrespective of the degree of retention,

Cleidocranial Dysplasia-dental Disorder Treatment and Audiology Diagnosis.

A review of numerous case reports was made, in order to demonstrate the possibilities for treatment of dental disorders in patients with Cleidocranial dysplasia (CCD). In this paper, our own report, including a diagnosis of the effect on the auditory system, is presented. In addition to the triad of CCD symptoms that include hypoplastic or aplastic clavicles, impacted and supernumerary teeth, delayed closure of fontanelles and cranial sutures, impairment of the hearing system resulting in conductive hearing loss also occurs. Our own report is based on the case of a 12-year-old CCD patient, in

Orthodontic treatment of severe anterior open bite and alveolar bone defect complicated by an ankylosed maxillary central incisor: a case report.

Incisor trauma is common in children, and can cause severe complications during adolescent growth and development. This report describes the treatment of a 16-year-old patient with severe anterior open bite due to ankylosis of the maxillary left incisor after dental trauma as an 8-year-old. No examination or active treatment was undertaken until he was 16 years old. Clinical examination revealed that the maxillary left incisor was severely intruded accompanied by a vertical alveolar bone defect. Orthodontic treatment combined with surgical luxation took 3 years and 7 months. During treatment,

Periodontal tissue reactions to orthodontic extrusion. An experimental study in the dog.

Orthodontic tooth extrusion is used at crown lengthening procedures or in conjunction with periodontal therapy aimed at eliminating or reducing angular bone defects. A technique for orthodontic extrusion combined with resection of the supracrestal attachment fibers (fiberotomy) was recently proposed as an adjunct to certain restorative procedures. The aim of the present investigation was to analyze reactions of the periodontal tissues to orthodontic extrusion when combined with fiberotomy. In 5 beagle dogs, the mesial roots of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th hemisected mandibular premolar were used as ta
