Caries and white spot lesion trajectories of orthodontic patients across an observation period of 20 years.

OBJECTIVES: Fixed orthodontic appliances may increase the risk for caries and white spot lesions. The aim of this retrospective study was to determine the long-term associations between both in orthodontic patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 103 patients aged 36.6 ± 6.5 years whose fixed appliance orthodontic treatment had finished at least 15 years ago were included. Current clinical data and photographs (T3), panoramic x-ray and photographs from before treatment (T0), after debonding (T1) and at 2-year follow-up (T2) were available. Parameters of interest were dentine caries, "Missing/Filled T

The consequences of orthodontic extrusion on previously intruded permanent incisors-A retrospective study.

AIM: The aim of this study is to compare the adverse effects that occur after orthodontic extrusion of teeth that have been traumatically intruded with those of similar teeth that have not experienced any trauma. BACKGROUND: The outcome of incisors intrusion can be affected by the patient's age, extent of injury, root development, and malocclusion. Orthodontic extrusion is a potential solution, but it may also cause complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the effects of extrusion of traumatically intruded teeth was carried out. The study group included 21 teeth in 14 p

The impacted maxillary canine. Further observations on aetiology, radiographic localization, prevention/interception of impaction, and when to suspect impaction.

Adjacent anomalous or missing maxillary lateral incisors have been implicated in the aetiology of palatally displaced canines by not providing proper guidance to the canine during its eruption. However, a recent review of the literature suggests that the aetiology of palatally displaced canines is genetic in origin. The aetiology of labially impacted canines differs, being due to inadequate arch space. Vertex occlusal radiographs have been recommended for localization but have limitations, and a case is illustrated where this radiograph is deceptive. The prevention/interception of a palatally

Miniscrew covering: an alternative to prevent traumatic lesions.

During orthodontic treatment with miniscrews, complications such as aphthous ulceration, soft-tissue coverage of the miniscrew head, soft-tissue inflammation, infection, and peri-implantitis can occur. Good hygiene can prevent inflammation by infection but does not prevent traumatic oral mucosal lesions at the buccal mucosa. The purpose of this article was to describe the use of a physical barrier--a light-cured temporary filling material--to cover the miniscrew head and prevent soft-tissue trauma.

Crouzon syndrome in a fraternal twin: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Crouzon syndrome (CS; OMIM 123500) is an autosomal dominant inherited craniofacial disorder caused by mutations in the fibroblast growth factor receptor 2 (FGFR2) gene. CS is characterized by craniofacial dysostosis, exophthalmos, and facial anomalies with hypoplastic maxilla and relative mandibular prognathism. CASE SUMMARY: Our report involves a 6-year-old fraternal twin boy with many caries in the oral cavity who presented with characteristic features of CS based on clinical and radiographic examinations along with Sanger sequencing. The fraternal girl did not show any abnormal

Occlusion, orthodontics, and temporomandibular disorders: Cutting edge of the current evidence.

The relationship between occlusion and temporomandibular disorders (TMD) represents one of the major controversies reported in the scientific literature. Nevertheless, sound evidence from large population-based surveys point toward weak and inconsistent associations, supporting that the role of the occlusion in the etiology of TMD should not be overstated. Also, despite the type of device, traditional orthodontic treatment seems to play a neutral role with regard to the onset of TMD: in particular, this therapeutic approach has been reported not to prevent or to increase the risk of TMD develo

Multidisciplinary management of impacted central incisors due to supernumerary teeth and an associated dentigerous cyst.

Supernumerary teeth are the most common developmental dental anomaly resulting from hyperactivity of dental lamina, dichotomy, environmental factor, or polygenetic process of atavism. Supernumerary teeth present classical oral complication such as impaction of adjacent teeth, crowding, diastema formation, rotation, displacement of teeth, and occlusal interference. A dentigerous cyst associated with anterior supernumerary teeth (mesiodens) is rare and accounts for 5% of all dentigerous cysts. The present case reports describe the successful management of the impacted permanent maxillary central

Conventional wisdom and the surgical exposure of impacted teeth.

OBJECTIVES: To provide evidence against the notion that direct contact between the crown of an impacted tooth and alveolar bone is an impediment to orthodontically assisted eruption of teeth. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The Department of Orthodontics at the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, in Jerusalem, Israel, and the private practices of the authors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients reported were those affected by impacted teeth, including individuals who were normal healthy patients, with and without resorption of the adjacent incisor roots, as well as individuals s

Intrusive luxation: a case report.

Intrusive luxation is one of the most severe types of dental trauma. The occurrence of pulp necrosis in intruded teeth with open apices is 100%. The risk of development of inflammatory or replacement root resorptions is high. Thus, endodontic intervention is required soon after the occurrence of trauma, in an attempt to prevent or delay the appearance of such lesions. On the other hand, the access to the root canal is difficult, as the crown is intruded. A multidisciplinary approach comprising Surgery, Orthodontics and Endodontics is required to allow exposure of the crown, orthodontic extrusi

Augmentation of faciolingual gingival dimensions with free connective tissue grafts before labial orthodontic tooth movement: an experimental study with a canine model.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine in an animal model whether any increase in gingival thickness after placement of free connective tissue autografts is maintained after labial orthodontic tooth movement. MATERIAL: In a split-mouth technique, the maxillary second and third incisors of 4 adult greyhounds were used as experimental, control, and sham-control teeth. The experimental teeth underwent gingival augmentation surgery. Two to 3 months later, the teeth were moved with a bonded orthodontic appliance over 2 to 3 months. Antibacterial Effect of the Nanoparticle-Incorporated Primers Commonly Used for Orthodontic Bonding.

BACKGROUND: Nanosized antibacterial agents can be used to prevent biofilm buildup on orthodontic appliances and auxiliaries, limiting microbial adherence and preventing caries. Nanoparticles (NPs) can enhance the antibacterial properties of orthodontic materials due to their smaller particle size and larger surface area. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study's material analysis was divided into four groups, numbered I through IV, using Transbond XT Primer as a control and modifying group I by adding various antibacterial agents. 98.1 g of mutans-sanguis agar was dissolved in 1,000 ml of warm disti

Three-dimensional microanalysis of tooth movement during the first 6 months of orthodontic double retention.

INTRODUCTION: This study performed a 3-dimensional analysis of tooth movement during orthodontic retention to assess the effectiveness of double retention (fixed and removable) in preventing undesired tooth movement. METHODS: One hundred randomly selected patients were included at the initiation of double orthodontic retention with fixed retainers and vacuum-formed splints (recommended to be worn 22 h/d) in both arches. Intraoral scans were performed directly (T0), 1 month (n = 88), 3 months (T2) (n = 78), and 6 months (T3) (n = 66) after retainer bonding. Nine reference points were marked on

Baicalin inhibits root resorption during tooth movement in a rodent model.

OBJECTIVE: Baicalin mediates bone metabolism and has shown protective activity against periodontal tissue damage in a rat model of periodontitis. Therefore, we hypothesized that baicalin may inhibit the root resorption that occurs during orthodontic tooth movement and examined its effect on the histological changes in periodontal tissue that occur during tooth movement. METHODS: First molars of rats were subjected to traction using excessive orthodontic force to produce a root resorption model. Rats in the baicalin group received baicalin for 3 weeks during tooth movement, and the amount of f

Oral hygiene and gingival health in Danish dental students and faculty.

This survey attempted to determine the status of oral cleanliness and gingival health in 150 dental students and 101 faculty members in a dental school. Without advance notice, plaque deposits were scored, using the Plaque Index System, and gingival health was determined using the criteria of the Gingival Index System. The 1st-year students had the poorest hygiene and gingival health. An improvement (P less than 0.01) was noted in the 2nd-year students who were still not in clinical training but had completed a course in preventive dentistry including oral hygiene techniques. Further improveme

Orthodontic management of patient with Silver-Russell Syndrome (SRS). A case report.

BACKGROUND: SRS is classified as a rare syndrome with an estimated incidence of 1 in 30.000/100.000 [Christoforidis A. et al., 2005]. It's a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder that presents a very wide phenotypic range. Due to its heterogeneity, SRS diagnosis is difficult, and the disease is probably underdiagnosed [Eggermann T. et al., 2009]. CASE REPORT: M., a 7-year-old patient affected by SRS syndrome, comes to the first visit with a history of pain in the upper retroincisive gum due to the deep bite (gingival impingement). The pain prevents the correct chewing during meals
