Comparison of Differences in Surgical Complications Between Fellowship-Trained Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgeons and All Other Orthopedic Surgeons Using the ABOS Database.

During the past decade, US orthopedic residency graduates have become increasingly subspecialized presumably for decreased patient complications; however, no study has examined this clinical utility for foot and ankle (F&A) surgeries among different fellowship subspecialties. Data from American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery 1999 to 2016 Part II Board Certification Examinations were used to assess patients treated by F&A fellowship-trained, trauma fellowship-trained, and all other fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeons performing ankle fracture repair. Adverse events were compared by surgical co

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy during orthopedic surgery practice presents unique challenges related to family planning, workplace accommodations, … odations. Contemporary evidence demonstrates that occupational exposure to MMA and radiation during orthopedic procedures remains below established safety thresholds when appropriate precautions are employed. Physical demands such as prolonged standing, heavy lifting, and extended work hours may warrant workplace modifications during pregnancy. Postpartum support, equi …

The role of preemptive analgesia with various analgesic drugs in patients undergoing orthopedic surgeries: A systematic review 2015-2020.

INTRODUCTION: Effective postoperative pain management remains a major challenge, particularly in orthopedic surgeries, as poor control can increase patient stress, prolong opioid use, and delay recovery and hospital discharge. This structured review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of various analgesic agents in preventing or reducing postoperative pain in patients undergoing orthopedic procedures. METHODS: A comprehensive systematic search was conducted in the Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus databases from 2015 up to the end of December 2020. Additionally, the reference lists of releva…

Prospective Evaluation of Utilization Patterns and Prescribing Guidelines of Opioid Consumption Following Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Overprescription of narcotic pain medication is a major culprit in the present opioid epidemic plaguing the United States. The current literature on lower extremity opioid usage has limitations and would benefit from additional study. The purpose of our study was to prospectively assess opioid consumption patterns following outpatient orthopedic foot and ankle procedures. METHODS: Patients undergoing outpatient orthopedic foot and ankle procedures who met inclusion criteria had the following prospective information collected: patient demographics, preoperative health history, pati

Analysis of the surgical waiting list for conditions not covered by the Explicit Health Guarantees in orthopedics and traumatology in Chile.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical waiting lists for conditions not covered by the Explicit Health Guarantees represent unmet needs and structural gaps within the Chilean public health system. The field of orthopedics and traumatology accounts for a high volume of pending procedures, with total knee arthroplasty being the most frequently delayed. The coexistence of deferrable pathologies not formally recorded, combined with the low efficiency in the use of operating rooms, aggravates this problem. This study aims to characterize the surgical waiting list for conditions not covered by the Explicit Health G

Effect of targeted screening and decolonisation for methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) in elective hip and knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Nasal and pharyngeal colonization with Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is a major risk factor for postoperative wound infections, particularly following orthopedic procedures. Preoperative targeted decolonisation reduces surgical site infections (SSIs) and is recommended by several national and international guidelines. However, real-world data on the sustained effectiveness of standardized targeted decolonisation programs in orthopedic surgery remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of a standardized preoperative S. aureus screening and targeted octen…

Risk level analysis for deep vein thrombosis (DVT): A study of Turkish patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a prevalent problem for orthopedic patients, particularly owing to the nature of operative interventions and treatment procedures, predisposing to an high risk of DVT. This descriptive study was conducted to determine the levels of risk, the risk factors, and their odds ratio for DVT in patients undergoing major orthopedic surgery. Data were collected using a Patient Information Form and the Autar DVT Risk Assessment Scale (DVTRAS) in orthopedic wards of a university hospital on postoperative day 2. Data were analyzed using descriptive, comparative analysis, and b

Long-term Trends in Open vs Endoscopic Carpal Tunnel Release Among the Medicare Population in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Carpal tunnel release (CTR) surgery is the most common surgery billed to Medicare by hand surgeons. As such, the purpose of this study was to evaluate trends for CTR surgeries billed to Medicare from 2000 to 2020. METHODS: The publicly available Medicare Part B National Summary File from 2000 to 2020 was queried. For both open carpal tunnel release (OCTR) and endoscopic carpal tunnel release (ECTR), the number of procedures and total Medicare reimbursement were extracted. For year 2020, the specialty of the performing surgeon was recorded. Descriptive statistics were reported. RE
