European spine journal : official publication of the European Spine Society, the European Spinal Deformity Society, and the European Section of the Cervical Spine Research Society2012eng
BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a well-known complication after total hip and knee arthroplasty. But limited studies have focused on prevalence of HO following cervical total disc arthroplasty (CTDA) and the published data show controversial results.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this review is to investigate the prevalence of HO following CTDA by meta-analysis.
METHODS: The literatures were collected from PubMed, Embase and Cochrane library by using keywords as ([disc or disk] and [arthroplasty or replacement]) and (HO or delayed fusion or spontaneous fusion). The original studies

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification in the extremities remains a common complication in the setting of high-energy wartime trauma, particularly in blast-injured amputees and in those in whom the definitive amputation was performed within the zone of injury. The purposes of this cohort study were to report the experience of one major military medical center with high-energy wartime extremity wounds, to define the prevalence of heterotopic ossification in these patients, and to explore the relationship between heterotopic ossification and other potential independent predictors.
METHODS: We ret

BACKGROUND: Major burn injuries close to joints alter the function of the musculoskeletal system through tissue loss and limitation of joint motion. In children with involvement of the hand, wrist, and forearm, restriction of elbow motion secondary to heterotopic ossification following a burn injury severely limits the function of the upper extremity. The purpose of this study was to review elbow function following excision of heterotopic ossification around the elbow in children.
METHODS: Eight children (ten elbows) from a population of 3245 consecutive patients who were admitted to our pedi

OBJECTIVE: The aetiology and pathogenesis of heterotopic ossification (HO) are still obscure. We evaluated the impact of necrotic gluteus minimus muscle (GMM) debridement on the formation of HO after operative treatment of posterior wall (PW) and associated transverse-posterior wall acetabular fracture (Tr/PW) fixations utilizing a Kocher-Langenbeck surgical exposure.
METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive patients with displaced PW or associated Tr/PW acetabular fracture-dislocations were operatively treated by a single surgeon using a Kocher-Langenbeck surgical exposure. Strict soft tissue techniq

A 36-year old man suffered an isolated head injury with a fracture of the skull, epidural and subdural hematomas as well as brain contusion (Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS): 5 points). The hematomas were evacuated by craniotomy. Because of high intracranial pressure (ICP) a barbiturate coma was necessary. Additionally, the patient demonstrated acute lung injury (ARDS) due to pneumonia 8 days after trauma. The patient recovered slowly and was transferred to neurorehabilitation on day 57 after injury. During the following 12 months the patient developed a significant deficit of hip motion (extens

Diagnosis and treatment of apparent deep venous thrombosis in a patient with spinal cord injury can be difficult. Heterotopic ossification in the paralyzed limbs of such patients can mimic deep venous thrombosis and can even produce false-positive findings on venograms. Anticoagulation, in turn, can be associated with soft tissue hemorrhage that may resemble thrombophlebitis and further confound interpretation of venograms. We have presented a case in which all these phenomena were present and in which a remaining risk of embolism was successfully managed through placement of a Greenfield filt

BACKGROUND: Postoperative heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare, but important complication following total hip arthroplasty (THA). Historically, surgical HO excision has been associated with a high incidence of complications and recurrence, and data are limited to guide treatment strategies. The purpose of this study was to assess functional and radiographic outcomes of HO excision with contemporary techniques following THA.
METHODS: A retrospective case series was performed of patients who underwent HO excision following THA from 2011 to 2025. Study patients were identified through an ele

Background Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a postoperative finding that may occur after distal biceps tendon repair using the double-incision technique; however, its incidence, temporal evolution, and clinical relevance remain incompletely defined. Objectives The objectives of this study are to determine the incidence and temporal evolution of heterotopic ossification (HO), evaluate variables associated with its development, and assess clinical outcomes following double-incision distal biceps tendon repair performed under a standardized postoperative protocol including non-steroidal anti-infl

Heterotopic ossification (HO), characterized by the formation of ectopic bone, is a benign mass observed in soft tissues. Depending on its location, it can cause symptoms beyond compression, such as mechanical blockage when associated with joints, leading to limitations in joint movements. In the majority of cases, involvement of the hip and elbow joints is common, while HO can sometimes be observed in atypical locations. Trauma, head injury, and spinal cord injuries are well-recognized risk factors for HO development. However, on rare occasions, in non-traumatic cases are identified without a

Why severe injury to the central nervous system (CNS) triggers the development of large neurogenic heterotopic ossifications (NHOs) within periarticular muscles remains unknown. We report that spinal cord injury (SCI) triggers a rapid corticosterone spike in mice, which is causal for NHO development because treatments with corticosterone or the synthetic glucocorticoid (GC) receptor (GR) agonist dexamethasone are sufficient to trigger heterotopic ossification and upregulate the expression of osteoinductive and osteogenic differentiation genes in injured muscles even without SCI. The central ro

Brain-derived extracellular vesicles participate in interorgan communication after traumatic brain injury by transporting pathogens to initiate secondary injury. Inflammasome-related proteins encapsulated in brain-derived extracellular vesicles can cross the blood‒brain barrier to reach distal tissues. These proteins initiate inflammatory dysfunction, such as neurogenic heterotopic ossification. This recurrent condition is highly debilitating to patients because of its relatively unknown pathogenesis and the lack of effective prophylactic intervention strategies. Accordingly, a rat model of ne

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore the effect of preoperative cervical spondylosis on the heterotopic ossification (HO) formation in different locations after cervical disc replacement (CDR).
METHODS: The degree of preoperative cervical spondylosis was evaluated radiologically, including the intervertebral disc, uncovertebral joints, facet joints and ligaments. The effects of cervical spondylosis on the HO formation after CDR were analyzed according to the location of HO. Multivariate logistic regression was performed to identify the independent

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective study was designed to evaluate the incidence and predisposing factors of heterotopic ossification (HO) after cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) with a specific implant at 1 and 2 levels, and to investigate the biomechanical effects related to HO. The study goal was to identify ways to reduce the likelihood of HO formation after surgery.
METHODS: The study included patients who underwent only 1- or 2-level CDA with the Baguera C disc between November 2014 and December 2021 at a single medical center. All patients were operated on by the same neurosurgeon. The surgic

Heterotopic ossification is a rare but debilitating situation. It occurs in patients who have undergone paralysis and/or immobilization. Hip osteoma is one of the most frequent locations and is associated with a significant functional handicap. Its treatment is based on surgical resection, which is a risky surgery that is not devoid of complications such as infections, hematoma, and recurrence. We describe in this paper a new surgical technique that adds to the classic hip osteoma resection: guidance with a navigation system coupled to a 3D imaging tool. We performed this technique on two pati

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a rare clinical phenomenon that refers to bone formation in nonossifying tissues.
CASE SUMMARY: This report presents two cases of HO beneath the upper abdominal median incision after radical gastrectomy. The first patient had postoperative pain below the incision area. There were no signs of anastomotic leakage, and the wound healed. Computed tomography (CT) findings 2 wk postoperatively were negative for HO, but the 6-wk CT showed HO beneath the incision. The patient refused reoperation, and after conservative therapy, the pain was gradually relie

Neurological heterotopic ossification (NHO) is characterized by abnormal bone growth in soft tissue and joints in response to injury to the central nervous system. The ectopic bone frequently causes pain, restricts mobility, and decreases the quality of life for those affected. NHO commonly develops in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, particularly in the presence of concomitant musculoskeletal injuries (i.e. polytrauma). There are currently no animal models that accurately mimic these combinations of injuries, which has limited our understanding of NHO pathobiology, as well as the

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO), either acquired (aHO) or hereditary, such as fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), is a serious condition without effective treatment. Understanding of the core process of injury-induced HO is still severely limited.
METHODS: Double-pulse thymidine analog labeling was used to explore the distinctive domains evolved in injury-induced lesions in an animal model of HO (Nse-BMP4). Histological studies were performed to see whether a similar zonal pattern is also consistently found in biopsies from patients with aHO and FOP. In vivo clonal analysis

Heterotopic ossification (HO) involves the formation and accumulation of extraskeletal bone tissue at the expense of local tissues including muscles and connective tissues. There are common forms of HO that are triggered by extensive trauma, burns and other bodily insults, and there are also rare congenital severe forms of HO that occur in children with Fibrodysplasia Ossificans Progressiva or Progressive Osseous Heteroplasia. Given that HO is often preceded by inflammation, current treatments usually involve anti-inflammatory drugs alone or in combination with local irradiation, but are not v
