BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) represents a significant global health burden. Transitioning from the traditional "self-limiting" perspective, emerging evidence suggests that neural plasticity and central maladaptation in the acute phase are pivotal in the progression to chronicity.
OBJECTIVES: This study investigated whole-brain functional connectivity and sensorimotor processing during acute LBP.
METHODS: Thirteen participants with acute LBP (<4 weeks duration) underwent clinical, psychometric, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) assessments. Brain activity and connectivity we

BACKGROUND: According to the prior 2017 review (Rabbitts et al), approximately 20% of children and adolescents develop chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP; ie, pain persisting >3 months after surgery) after major surgeries, which is associated with adverse functional and psychological consequences. A major barrier was that definitions of CPSP applied were highly variable. Since that prior review was conducted (n=4 studies in meta-analysis), numerous relevant studies have been published warranting an update.
OBJECTIVE: The aims of this current review were to: (1) provide an updated prevalence esti

OBJECTIVE: Pain is one of the most prevalent and upsetting symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), possibly linked to small fiber neuropathy (SFN). We evaluated small nerve fiber damage in PD patients through corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) and investigated its relationship to pain.
METHODS: 68 PD patients and 31 healthy controls (HC) underwent CCM. Motor and non-motor symptom scales were used to evaluate the recruited PD patients. The patients were divided into two groups: PD with pain (PD-P) and PD with no pain (PD-NP).
RESULTS: Compared to the HC and PD-NP group, PD-P exhibited significan

Drinking as a coping method in response to pain is a complex behaviour, involving multiple neural, motivational, and psychological factors. Among these factors, pain sensitivity and pain-related drinking motive can significantly promote alcohol use. In contrast, proactive avoidance - a beneficial strategy of initiating overt actions to avoid negative outcomes - reduces harmful consumption. Yet, these factors have not been assessed as potential predictors of future drinking behaviour. Here, in a longitudinal study we collected fMRI data in 50 drinkers who, at baseline, performed a probabilistic

We identified patterns of health and functioning in a national sample of dementia family caregivers experiencing chronic pain (N = 273). Utilizing latent profile analysis of the 29-item Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS-29), we identified three discrete groups: an average group (48%), a low health challenges group (30%), and a high health challenges group (22%). Women were more likely to be in the high (vs. low) health challenges group. There are discrete health patterns of caregivers with chronic pain, with over 20% reporting comorbid poor health and functioning

Palliative care provides care for seriously ill and dying people, often suffering from pain. Adequate pain treatment is therefore a main focus of the treatment team. Attempts are made to objectify the occurrence of pain using scoring systems such as ESAS or MIDOS. However, the difficulty of objectifying subjective conditions, such as the phenomenon of pain, is problematic and renders the scoring systems poor in content. Only through the complementary efforts of the treatment team, which can be found in the basic attitude of an open-minded recognition of states of suffering, can the best possib

BACKGROUND: Altered subchondral bone mineral density (BMD) may be a possible contributor to osteoarthritis (OA) pain. We evaluated the relation of compartment-specific proximal tibial BMD, at varying depths beneath the subchondral surface, to knee pain.
METHODS: Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) study participants with knee CTs were included. A 3D imaging tool measuring BMD in relation to depth from the subchondral surface was used to assess proximal tibial subchondral BMD at depths of 0-2.5, 2.5-5.0, and 5-10 mm. Knee pain in the past 30 days was scored on a numeric rating scale (range 0-100

Corticosteroids are commonly used in the treatment of inflammatory low back pain, and their nominal target is the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) to relieve inflammation. They can also have similar potency at the mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). The MR has been shown to be widespread in rodent and human dorsal root ganglia (DRG) neurons and non-neuronal cells, and when MR antagonists are administered during a variety of inflammatory pain models in rats, pain measures are reduced. In this study we selectively knockout (KO) the MR in sensory neurons to determine the role of MR in sensory neurons of

BACKGROUND: Muscle stiffness is commonly associated with a sensation of tightness, pain and movement difficulty. It is unclear, however, whether changes in muscle stiffness can be objectively identified by myotonometry across time. This study investigated whether a myotonometer (MyotonPRO) can detect changes in muscle stiffness by delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS).
METHODS: Twenty-three healthy adults participated in this study. DOMS was achieved in the gastrocnemii by downhill-backwards walking on a motorised treadmill. Subjective ratings of gastrocnemii pain and stiffness were recorded u

Women with pelvic floor disorders (PFDs) typically undergo surgery involving transvaginal mesh implants; however, transvaginal mesh surgery is associated with many adverse events including post-surgical pain. Assessment of pain as a symptom is necessary using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs). This scoping review aimed to describe and compare existing PROMs previously used to measure pain in women with PFDs. A scoping search of Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL Plus, Ovid PsycInfo, and grey literature was conducted. Studies published in English describing the development, implementation, an

BACKGROUND: The extent to which different measures of back pain impact represent an underlying common factor has implications for decisions about which one to use in studies of pain management and estimating one score from others.
AIMS: To determine if different self-report back pain impact measures represent an underlying pain latent variable and estimate associations with it.
METHOD: Seven pain impact measures completed by Amazon Mechanical Turk adults are used to estimate internal consistency reliability and associations: Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), Roland-Morris Disability Questionn

Gait alterations in those with mild unilateral knee pain during walking may provide clues to modifiable alterations that affect progression of knee pain and osteoarthritis (OA). To examine this, we applied machine learning (ML) approaches to gait data from wearable sensors in a large observational knee OA cohort, the Multicenter Osteoarthritis (MOST) study. Participants completed a 20-m walk test wearing sensors on their trunk and ankles. Parameters describing spatiotemporal features of gait and symmetry, variability and complexity were extracted. We used an ensemble ML technique ("super learn

Understanding chronic pain and disability requires a consideration of the lived experience of the patient. There is limited evaluation of the content validity of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in chronic pain using a comprehensive biopsychosocial view of the patient's experience. To address this gap, this study aimed to evaluate the content validity of PROMs for patients with chronic pain. A literature review was performed to identify PROMs for patients with chronic pain. Concepts from PROMs were linked to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF)

Introduction: The physiopathology of central post-stroke pain (CPSP) is poorly understood, which may contribute to the limitations of diagnostic and therapeutic advancements. Thus, the current systematic review was conducted to examine, from an integrated perspective, the cortical neurophysiological changes observed via transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), focusing on the structural damage, and clinical symptoms in patients with CPSP. Methods: The literature review included the databases EMBASE, PubMed, and ScienceDirect using the following search terms by MeSH or Entree descriptors: [("Ce

Ovariectomy (spaying) using the trans-vaginal dropped ovary technique (DOT) is performed to prevent pregnancy in cull female beef cattle that are not retained for breeding stock in areas practicing extensive grazing management. There are no reports describing analgesia for this surgical procedure. The objective of this study was to measure behavioral and physiological responses to determine whether an analgesic protocol of BXK [butorphanol (0.01 mg/kg), xylazine (0.02 mg/kg), and ketamine (0.04 mg/kg)] injected intramuscularly (i.m.) before spaying could mitigate procedural and immediate posts

PURPOSE: In June 2013, following recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the European Medicines Agency agreed updates to the codeine product information regarding use for pain in children younger than 12 years and children undergoing tonsillectomy or adenoidectomy (TA) for obstructive sleep apnoea. This study was conducted to (a) assess effectiveness of these measures on codeine prescribing in the "real-world" setting and (b) test feasibility of a study using a common protocol by regulators with access to databases.
METHODS: The study w
