Tensor veli palatini muscle and palatine aponeurosis: Their independent fetal development and delayed meeting.

To demonstrate the prenatal morphology of the palatine aponeurosis (AP) and establish how the tendon of the tensor veli palatini (TVP) muscle meets the aponeurosis, we examined serial histological sections of 25 heads from human fetuses at approximately 9-16 weeks of gestational age (GA). At 9 weeks GA, the initial AP was identified as mesenchymal condensation that extended anteriorly to attach to the palatine bone. The TVP muscle extended inferiorly and curved along the greater palatine nerve; however, the TVP tendon does not reach the AP. At 10 weeks GA, the AP had developed as a tendinous o

Psammoma Bodies in a Large Myoepithelioma.

Myoepithelioma is a rare benign tumor of the salivary glands, in which the vast majority of neoplastic cells are myoepithelial. A rare microscopic finding in salivary gland tumors, including myoepitheliomas, is the presence of psammoma bodies (PBs), whose etiology and role in the tumors are uncertain. The objective of this study is to describe the unusual histopathologic findings, such as psammomas, of a large myopephelioma on the palate and the prosthetic restorative treatment performed after resection of the tumor. A 52-year-old woman was referred for evaluation of a tumor-like lesion, of sm

Endodontic management of the maxillary first molar with special root canals: A case report and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: As the complex anatomy of maxillary first molars is one of the major challenges in endodontic therapy, knowledge of the complicated root canal anatomy and configuration is crucial to ensure the success of endodontic treatment and prognosis. This article presents an endodontically managed left maxillary first molar with an unusual palatal root morphology. The available literature on the anatomic variation of maxillary first molars is also reviewed. CASE SUMMARY: A 36-year-old man with no medical history presented to the Stomatology Department of Peking University Third Hospital com

Neonatal Functional Treatment for Pierre Robin Sequence.

OBJECTIVE: Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a heterogeneous pathological condition characterized by the coexistence of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate, resulting in upper airway tract obstruction. Among the treatment modalities, the orthodontic approach is one part of the comprehensive care of those patients and will be present in the treatment modalities during all the growth period of the child. METHODS: All patients with PRS observed in the period 2013-2017 were treated with a definite functional approach. The results were retrospectively analyzed with regard to functional outco

Effects of lip adhesion and presurgical orthopedics on facial growth: an evaluation of four treatment protocols.

Differences in craniofacial morphology in uni and bilateral cleft lip and palate were studied by roentgenocephalometry: 35 American children, treated with a lip adhesion procedure, and 26 Dutch children treated with a preoperative orthopedic procedure, both followed by a lip and/or palatal repair, were compared. A multivariate statistical approach was used to study the effects of the surgical procedures and of the age of the child when operated upon. The variables affected by the type of operation were: the relative length of the maxilla (PNS-ANS); the SNA angle; and the relative length of the

Management of velopharyngeal disorders. A case series.

Patients with acquired defects or congenital malformations of the palate exhibit disturbances in speech, including hypernasality, nasal emission, and decreased intelligibility of speech. Maxillofacial prosthetic treatment can reestablish the palatopharyngeal integrity to provide the potential for acceptable speech. This article describes a case series of patients with palatopharyngeal disorders and their treatment approaches.

Prosthodontic management of the cleft-palate patient.

Unlike some of the disciplines involved in the treatment of the cleft-palate patient, prosthodontics can have application from birth to death. Prosthodontic care never ends. Once surgical care or speech therapy has been completed, the need for follow-up care is ended unless specific problems manifest. With prosthodontic care, not only a restoration of the anatomic, physiologic, and cosmetic deficiencies but also a continual vigilance for signs of dental and periodontal problems must be undertaken. Preventive care is imperative if long-term preservation of the supporting structures and the well

Automated Computed Tomography Segmentation of the Pharyngeal Airway and Palate to Accelerate Tübingen Palatal Plate Fabrication in Pierre Robin Sequence.

Infants with Pierre Robin sequence frequently develop upper airway obstruction due to micrognathia and glossoptosis. The Tübingen palatal plate repositions the tongue base anteriorly to improve airway patency; however, conventional fabrication requires serial intraoral impressions and repeated nasoendoscopy, which prolongs airway compromise. Computed tomography (CT) enables single-session virtual spur design, yet manual pharyngeal airway and hard palate segmentation is labor-intensive, delaying treatment. The authors evaluated convolutional neural network-based automated segmentation to accele

Simplifying cleft surgery by presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) for infant born with unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate: a clinical report.

PATIENT: A 2-day-old female infant with complete unilateral cleft lip, alveolus, and palate (left side) was presented to the Department of Prosthodontics, Government Dental College and Hospital, Nagpur for evaluation and treatment with presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) prior to surgical intervention. DISCUSSION: The alignment of the alveolar segments creates the foundation upon which excellent results of primary lip and nasal surgery are dependent in the repair of the cleft lip, alveolus, and palate patient. Presurgical infant orthopedics has been employed since the 1950s as an adjuncti

[The orthodontist and the child with a cleft palate].

Dealing with this type of malformation, the orthodontist is confronted with a three-level problem: inter-personal, social, and technical. Because families consider the birth of a cleft palate child to be a disaster, orthodontists who undertake their treatment should understand the genesis of the turbulence that families will have to endure. Most parents learn to deal with these difficulties, but the affected children are going to have to submit to the stares of those they encounter. Adolescence is a critical period for them and it is also the time when they will visit their orthodontist most f

Delayed closure of the hard palate: a comparison of speech in children with open and functionally closed residual clefts.

The speech of 20 children with cleft in the hard palate that had not yet been repaired was evaluated and analysed at 7 years of age. The cleft in the hard palate was open in 14 patients and functionally closed in six. All children were born with cleft lip and palate and treated surgically according to a routine that included delayed closure of the hard palate until age 8-10 years. The soft palate was repaired at approximately 6-8 months of age. Tape recordings were used for perceptual analysis of the speech. Maxillary casts were used to assess approximate age for functional closure of the resi

Detachable Lip and Cheek Plumper for Rehabilitation of Facial Disfigurement.

BACKGROUND: Hemimaxillectomy of acquired palatal defects may predispose the patient to hypernasal speech, leakage of fluids into the nasal cavity, impaired masticatory function, and swallowing difficulties leading to a detrimental impact on the quality of life. Sequentially, it can also affect individual character and trust in social life, leading to social phobia and anxiety. This article presents prosthodontic management of a young male patient with deformation of the entire right half of the face due to surgical removal of odontogenic myxoma. It describes a method where the clinician utiliz
