Analogs of the aromatic constituent of calichemicins were labeled with 131I by exchange reactions. Radiochemical yield for methyl-4-hydroxy-5-iodo-2,3-dimethoxy-6-methylbenzoate was approx. 90%. For methyl-4-benzyloxy-2-hydroxy-3-iodo-6-methylbenzoate the yield was about 30%. Biodistribution studies were carried out in mice following intravenous administration of tracer doses. A 57-year-old woman with a history of allergy to local anesthetics was referred to us to be admitted for a general anesthetic for removal of a sliver from her finger. Because allergic reaction to local anesthetics often is caused by an anesthetic other than lidocaine, or is due to the carrier vehicle in the diluent, a skin test with pure lidocaine was performed. After showing no reaction, the patient was given the standard dose of lidocaine and the sliver was removed in the emergency department. The patient was discharged home with no sequelae.

PURPOSE: To evaluate regional differences in permeability of human oral mucosa.
METHODS: Newly designed perfusion cells were used for the investigation. The cells were applied to 5 different sites, i.e., dorsum of tongue, ventral surface of tongue, labial mucosa, floor of mouth and buccal mucosa of human volunteers. Model drugs used were methyl-, ethyl-, propyl- and butylparaben, which are passively absorbed from oral mucosa and have different lipophilicities. In this study, a coral like structure conjugated microporous polymer with abundant N/O functional groups was synthesized using a one-step method.
