The influence of decreased parental resources on the efficacy of a responsive parenting intervention.

To understand whether a responsive parenting intervention for socially disadvantaged mothers was related to preintervention parenting resources, the authors examined both of these conditions as moderators of behavior change in 264 participating families (term, n = 120; very low birth weight, n = 144). Families were randomly assigned to an intervention that targeted responsive behaviors or received developmental information. Limited internal resources, particularly higher levels of anger/hostility, were related to less positive change for the broadest range of responsive behaviors for mothers i…

[Competent parenting: expectations of young parents of counseling on pregnancy and labor].

BACKGROUND: Are expecting parents prepared to change their lifestyle to benefit their unborn child? Do they see a need for more knowledge and competence to be good parents? What are the key expectations with respect to pregnancy, delivery conditions, and infant health care? To answer these questions, a study presented them to expecting and young parents in Germany. METHODS: 123 delivery units were selected to represent the 1120 delivery facilities of Germany identified in 1997 from all accessible sources. 109 participated, and of 7862 distributed questionnaires 5900 (75%) were filled-in compl

Validation of the parenting style survey for parents of children with mental retardation.

A validation study was performed in order to assess the content, construct, and criterion-related validities of the Parenting Style Survey, an instrument assessing parental behavior in families with a child who has mental retardation. Subjects were the primary careproviders of 29 individuals with moderate mental retardation. Data corroborating the validity of the Parenting Style Survey were derived from home visits, individuals experienced in developmental psychology, careproviders for individuals with mental retardation, and the Family Environment Scale (Moos, 1974). The Parenting Style Surve…

How parental smartphone addiction affects adolescent smartphone addiction: The effect of the parent-child relationship and parental bonding.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent smartphone addiction (ASA) has fueled concerns worldwide regarding the negative health effects. This study aimed to examine whether parental smartphone addiction (PSA) affected ASA, and evaluated the mediating role of the parent-child relationship and the moderating role of parental bonding in the effect from PSA to ASA, among a Chinese sample of parent-child pairs. METHODS: A large-scale cross-sectional survey was conducted among 10- to 15-year-old students and their parents. ASA and PSA were assessed by Mobile Phone Addiction Index (MPAI). The parent-child relationshi

Is negative parenting always harmful? The differential effects of parental rejection and parental overprotection on proactive personality in young adults.

The present study is anchored in the theoretical framework of ecological systems. Its objective is to investigate the underlying mechanisms through which negative parenting styles exhibited by parents influence the proactive personality of their offspring. The study will focus on the mediating effects of positive coping strategies and the moderating influences of teacher-student support. This study draws on survey data collected from a sample of 695 Chinese university students to empirically test the proposed hypotheses. The results demonstrated that: Initial findings indicated that parental r…

Mindful parenting as both buffer and sensitizer in the association between parent-child conflict and parental stress: A diary study.

Parent-child conflict is a key source of parental stress, and mindful parenting may serve as a protective moderator. However, little is known about how these associations unfold at both the within-person (daily) and between-person levels. This study examined how daily fluctuations and individual differences in parent-child conflict were associated with parental stress, and whether baseline mindful parenting buffered these links. Seventy-three Chinese parents (M = 37.89, SD = 3.62, 86.3% mothers) of children aged 5-6 years completed a baseline measure of mindful parenting and a 14-day diary on …

Neighborhood resources, parental attachment, and parenting behaviors in early childhood among parents with child protective services involvement.

Parents involved with child protective services (CPS) often face stressors that compromise their parenting; thus, it is critical to identify sources of resilience at multiple ecological levels. This study leveraged cross-sectional data from a study of CPS-involved parent-child dyads (N = 129). Most parents identified as having a minoritized racial/ethnic identity and as having low income. Parent responsive involvement, constructive discipline, and problematic discipline were coded from observations of parent-child interactions when children were approximately 4 years old (M = 4.19 years, SD = …

Parent Conflict, Accused Parent, and Sexism Beliefs Influence Credibility in Parent-Accused Child Sexual Abuse Cases.

When parent-accused child sexual abuse allegations co-occur with parent conflict, concerns arise that the allegations are fabricated by the child's non-accused parent. However, no prior research has directly examined how parent conflict influenced credibility in parent-accused child sexual abuse cases. There are also discrepant research findings on how accused parent gender and decision-makers' gender-based beliefs influenced allegation credibility in parent-accused abuse and conflict cases. We examined how parent conflict (low, high), accused parent (father, mother, mother's boyfriend), and p

Adaptation and validation of the Parents' Self-stigma Scale into Turkish and its association with parenting stress and parental self-efficacy.

OBJECTIVES: In the present era, parents frequently stigmatize themselves for their children's negative behaviors and inadequate social skills. Parents' self-stigma (PSS) may lead to a decrease in parental self-efficacy and quality of marital and family life. In light of these reasons, the principal objective of this study to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the PSS Scale (PSSS) as developed by Eaton et al. (2019) and to investigate the indirect effect that parenting stress has on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy. METHODS: We collected data f…

The influence of parent and couple characteristics on parental responsivity during parent-child interactions in families of children with fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with fragile X syndrome (FXS) experience elevated levels of parenting stress due to the challenges associated with raising a child with significant disabilities. Biological mothers of children with FXS are at an increased genetic risk for experiencing mental health challenges. Parental mental health challenges and stress are often associated with reduced marital cohesion and satisfaction, which may spill over and negatively affect the parent-child relationship for both mothers and fathers. AIM: The current study examined relationships among characteristics of p…

Childhood and adolescence outcomes in offspring to parents with bipolar disorder: the impact of lifetime parental comorbidity, parental sex, and bipolar subtype.

BACKGROUND: Offspring of parents with bipolar disorder have increased risks of their own psychopathology. However, a large-scale survey of psychiatric, somatic, and adverse social outcomes up to adulthood, which could aid in prioritizing and tailoring prevention, is lacking. It also remains to clarify how risks are modified by other parental factors. METHODS: Swedish population registers were linked to compare offspring having (N = 24,788) and not having (N = 247,880) a parent with bipolar disorder with respect to psychiatric diagnoses and psychotropic medication, birth-related and somatic co

Acute Effects of Parent Stimulant Medication Versus Behavioral Parent Training on Mothers' ADHD, Parenting Behavior, and At-Risk Children.

BACKGROUND: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is present in 25%-50% of parents of children with ADHD, compromising parenting and child behavioral treatment. Efforts to treat multiplex ADHD families have not compared behavioral parenting interventions to parent psychopharmacology without confounds of other treatments. This report describes a pilot early intervention study directly comparing parent lisdexamfetamine dimesylate (LDX) to behavioral parent training (BPT) in families in which the mother had currently untreated ADHD and the young child displayed ADHD symptoms. METHODS: …

Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect: Do Parents Show Improvement in Parental Mental Health Problems and Parental Stress?

Multisystemic Therapy for Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) is an evidence-based program for families with children who experience maltreatment. This clinical trial is the first evaluation of MST-CAN in a German-speaking area. Parental psychological problems and parental stress have been shown to be risk factors for child abuse and neglect. By the end of treatment, parents reported significantly less psychological distress than before the start of MST-CAN. Six months after treatment, this reduction was still evident. However, parents did not report any significant reduction of parental stress

The Role of Perceived Societal Pressure and Parents' Child-Oriented Self-Construal in Overprotective and Controlling Parenting in Belgian Parents of Adolescents.

Societal expectations and demands regarding parenting roles have significantly intensified in recent decades, putting pressure on parents to be perfect in their parental role, which may push them to become overly involved in their children's lives. Although evidence suggests that perceived societal pressure is associated with overprotective and controlling parenting, less is known about which parents are more sensitive to such pressure. We investigated whether parents' child-oriented interdependent self-construal (the degree to which parents consider their relationship with their children as s…
