X-ray observations of bone lesions produced by Syphilis Connata Praecox have been reviewed. 15 cases of this condition are presented of which six show mucous and cutaneous lesions. One planus condylomata; three cases of pemphigus, one with paronychia; one perionixis and one rhinitis. Bone lesions appeared in X-ray observations in all cases excepting one in which lesions had already reacted to therapy. Concerning these 15 cases of Syphilis Connata Praecox we consider important to inform about X-ray discoveries both frequent and infrequent concerning this condition. We point out one exceptional …

Subungual Bowen's disease and squamous cell carcinoma are not as rare as has been implied by earlier literature. The course of the lesions is protracted. Clinically the diseases may mimic onychomycosis, chronic paronychia, eczema, verruca vulgaris, pyogenic granuloma, subungual exostosis, or malignant melanoma. Histologic examination is the key to diagnosis. As only two metastases have occurred in 110 patients, subungual epidermoid carcinomas should be regarded as low-grade malignancies that can be managed by conservative surgical ablation. The microscopically controlled excision technic (Mohs…

Green nail syndrome (GNS) is a triad of green discoloration of the nail plate, proximal paronychia, and distal onycholysis. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is known to be the most common causative agent; however, there is no unified standard for the diagnosis and treatment of GNS. Thus, treatment is challenging and often refractory. Here, we report three representative cases with different predisposing factors, including trauma-related, occupation-related, and onychosis-related GNS. Patients with GNS accompanied by onycholysis were instructed to undergo chemical nail avulsion combined with topical anti…

RATIONALE: In this study, a case of toe keloid after nail extraction is presented, in which the keloids on both toes were resected by surgical excision. Keloids (from the Greek word meaning "crab's claw") are fibrous growths that extend beyond the original area of injury to involve the adjacent normal skin. In general, keloid tendencies appear to be regionally isolated to keloid-prone areas, such as the chest, ears, and deltoid regions, whereas the hands and feet are usually spared, which is why this case is meaningful.

Onychomycosis is the most frequent cause of nail disease. Dermatophytic and Candida onychomycosis have a similar frequency (54% and 45%), while only in 1% they are caused by molds. Tinea unguium equally affects both sexes and is mainly observed in the first toenail. T. rubrum is the fungus responsible in 87% of dermatophytosis. The ungual candidosis is three times more frequent on the hands in women and is due to C. albicans in 99% of the cases. Both types of onychomycosis are observed in children. Clinical diagnosis of onychomycosis based on direct KOH examination. Treatment includes the remo

BACKGROUND: Invasive fusariosis is an infection with Fusarium spp. that primarily affects patients with hematologic malignancies and hematopoietic cell transplant recipients. Wounds, digital ulcers, onychomycosis, and paronychia are the typical cutaneous portals of entry. Early management of mycotic nails in immunocompromised and diabetic hosts is crucial to prevent life-threatening disease.
OBJECTIVES: We report nine cases of Fusarium onychomycosis (F. dimerum, n = 5; F. oxysporum, n = 3; Fusarium spp., n = 1) in immunocompetent hosts and their response to itraconazole and terbinafine pulse …

The green nail syndrome is characterized by discolouration of the nail plate frequently accompanied by chronic paronychia and onycholysis. The cause could be either bacterial or fungal infection. A 24-year-old woman presented to the clinic with a history of discolouration of the nail plate and bed accompanied by onycholysis. Scrapings from the nail were taken twice, microscopically examined, and cultured on media for isolation and identification of bacteria and fungi. The first sample gave positive results for Enterococcus spp. After treatment and a lack of complete recovery of the nail, secon…

OBJECTIVE: A 57-year-old female with a 33-year history of constant hand discoloration and paronychia had undergone multiple evaluations with a failure to find a diagnosis. She continues to undergo an evolving treatment regimen and diagnostic workup in an effort to find a long-eluded diagnosis.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION: She began to develop superficial ulcerations over the proximal phalanx of her fingers, often pruritic and erythematous, with pain and edema.
INTERVENTION: She has since been managed with nifedipine and sildenafil and intermittent stellate ganglion blocks.
CONCLUSION: Despite sti…

We describe an unusual presentation of pemphigus vulgaris, an autoimmune intraepidermal blistering skin disease associated with autoantibodi … appropriate treatment. Pemphigus vulgaris may have unusual manifestations, such as nail dystrophy, paronychia, or granulation tissue-like lesions, but this case of bilateral foot ulceration highlights a further, perhaps unique, clinical presentation of this autoimmune disease.

If reports from the Workmen's Compensation Commissioner are compared with international figures, dermatitis in South African industry appears to be underestimated. Compensation for occupational dermatitis in South Africa relies on the presence of a positive patch test. A prevalence study at a canning factory in the western Cape showed high rates of dermatoses. No association could be shown between dermatitis, intertrigo or chronic paronychia and patch-test positivity. It is argued that patch-test positivity is purely coincidental to the dermatoses and that patch testing has little role to play…

The condition of a 33-year-old woman who had a history of blisters following trauma on the hands, knees, and feet since 1 year of age previously had been diagnosed as epidermolysis bullosa. She also had psoriasiform plaques, a pustular crusted periorificial eruption, paronychia, alopecia, and photophobia. She had had minimal history of diarrhea. A markedly decreased serum zinc level was found, and treatment with zinc sulfate was instituted, resulting in clearing of all clinical manifestations. Since patients with hereditary acrodermatitis enteropathica may have minimal or no diarrhea and the c…

Retronychia is an uncommonly reported condition among the category of nail pathologies. It often presents mimicking similar nail disorders, such as onychocryptosis, onychomycosis, and paronychia. This pathologic condition has recently seen an increased presence in the literature, mainly in the form of case studies. Literature on retronychia was collected using PubMed, the US National Library of Medicine, the National Institutes of Health's online database, life science journals, and online books. References cited by these articles were also reviewed for additional relevant publications. Review…

Six patients were seen with primary syphilitic chancres on their fingers between 1965 and 1980. Of these, two had bipolar chancres on their fingers and genitals resulting from sexual foreplay. Because syphilis is rarely suspected in such cases diagnostic errors are common.
