Diagnostic Accuracy and Post-Procedural Complications Associated with Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle Biopsy in the Preoperative Evaluation of Parotid Tumors.

Correct diagnosis of a parotid neoplasm based on histology preoperatively is of utmost importance in order to guide patient management. The aim of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of an ultrasound-guided core needle biopsy of a parotid lesion and to describe associated post-procedural complications. A retrospective study was conducted between January 2015 and March 2021 of all patients who were referred to a tertiary care center for evaluation of a parotid lesion and who underwent core needle biopsy due to high-risk features or when malignancy was suspected on clinical examin

Acinic Cell Carcinoma of the Parotid Gland in Children and Adolescents.

Acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland is a rare low-grade malignant neoplasm. Data on children are sparse. For the present study, the database of a tertiary pediatric medical center was reviewed for all patients with parotid gland acinic cell carcinoma diagnosed and treated between 2004 and 2013. Clinical, histologic, treatment, and outcome parameters were collected from the medical files. Four patients were identified, 3 female and 1 male, aged 13.5 to 18 years (median 15.7) at diagnosis. One patient had a family history of parotid tumor and 1 of hypothyroidism/hyperthyroidism. Two patie

Tuberculosis of the parotid gland.

Tuberculosis (Tbc) presented as an isolated parotid mass is rare. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult and the symptomatology is nonspecific. In the majority of the cases an initial diagnosis of a parotid tumor, often a pleomorphic adenoma, is made. We present a 35-year old woman with a six months duration right parotid lump. The mass was firm and nontender without ipsilateral cervical lymphadenopathy, suggesting a parotid neoplasm. The computerized tomography scan showed an intraparotideal tumor resembling a pleomorphic adenoma and thus the patient underwent to a superficial parotidectomy. Fin

Epstein-barr virus-associated extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT Lymphoma) arising in the parotid gland of a child with ataxia telangiectasia.

Hematologic malignancies, in particular T-cell lymphomas/leukemias, are prevalent in patients with ataxia telangiectasia (AT), with most reported cases being clinically aggressive and high grade. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is often associated with lymphoid proliferations/neoplasms arising in immunodeficient patients. Reports of low-grade B-cell neoplasms in the ataxia telangiectasia population are extremely rare. Here, we describe a case of EBV-associated extranodal marginal zone lymphoma (mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphoma) of the parotid gland in a 16-year-old boy with AT. In addition,

Parotid Oncocytomas Express the Glycoprotein Non-metastatic Melanoma Protein B (GPNMB): A Potential Link with Birt-Hogg-Dubé Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHDS) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder caused by germline pathogenic variations in the FLCN gene. It is characterized by cutaneous fibrofolliculomas, pulmonary cysts with risk of pneumothorax, and an increased risk of renal neoplasms. Salivary gland involvement, particularly parotid oncocytomas, is uncommon and may represent an underrecognized manifestation. This study evaluates the immunohistochemical (IHC) expression of folliculin (FLCN) and glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B (GPNMB) in parotid oncocytomas to assess their potential utilit

Cystadenocarcinoma (papillary cystadenocarcinoma) of the submandibular gland.

Cystadenocarcinoma (papillary cystadenocarcinoma) of the salivary gland is a rare malignant neoplasm. Major locations of this neoplasm are the parotid gland, the sublingual gland, and minor salivary glands, while occurrence in the submandibular gland is extremely rare. As far as we know, only one report, written in the French language, has been published concerning cystadenocarcinoma of the submandibular gland, but no report is available in the English language. In this report, we describe a case of cystadenocarcinoma arising from the submandibular gland of a 54-year-old male patient. The neop

Primary Parotid Angiosarcoma in a 66-year-old Man Initially Presented as Cervical Lymph Node Metastasis: Pitfall Diagnosis with Review of Literature.

Angiosarcoma is a malignant vascular tumor that occurs mostly in the soft tissues, skin, trunk, and limbs. Angiosarcoma of the parotid gland is a very uncommon and rare tumor. Herein, we presented a case of a 66-year-old man who was referred for a lump in his neck and his initial biopsy reported Castleman disease. After three months during which the mass did not resolve, a re-biopsy was performed. The biopsy revealed vascular neoplasm composed of neoplastic spindle cells arranged in fascicles with extravasation of the red blood cells within the lymph node. A diagnosis of metastatic angiosarcom

[A bilateral epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland].

We report the case of a 52-year-old man, who was admitted in the department of otorhinolaryngology for a mass of the right parotid gland. The radiological and clinical hypothesis was a squamous cell carcinoma. Histopathological examination revealed a biphasic proliferation composed of epithelial cells arranged in a tubular pattern stained with cytokeratins 5-6 and 7 and EMA surrounded by clear myoepithelial cells stained with smooth muscle actin and p63. Ki-67 labeling index was low. The diagnosis of epithelial myoepithelial carcinoma was proposed. One year after, the patient noticed a centime

Plasmablastic lymphoma involving the parotid gland.

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. It is strongly associated with HIV infection, although it has been recognized in immunocompetent patients. Plasmablastic lymphoma has a predilection for the oral cavity. Its occurrence in the parotid gland has not been previously described. We report a case of an HIV positive man who developed a rapidly enlarging parotid mass. A core biopsy of the parotid mass was evaluated by routine microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and in situ hybridization. The tumor was comprised of sheets of large cells with abundant cytoplasm, eccentric nucl

Metachronous bilateral submandibular gland metastases from carcinoma of the breast.

Metastases to the salivary glands from distant neoplasms are unusual, with most reported cases involving the parotid gland. Metastatic deposits in the submandibular gland are extremely rare with bilateral involvement not previously reported. We present the case of a patient with advanced breast carcinoma who has had metachronous involvement of both submandibular glands and review the literature on this subject.

Hemangiopericytoma of the parotid gland: CT and MR features.

Hemangiopericytomas are uncommon vascular neoplasms with rare occurrence in the head and neck region. They originate from the pericytes, which are small, oval cells encircling capillaries. Hemangiopericytomas traditionally appear in the retroperitoneum and in the capillaries of the extremities. A case of hemangiopericytoma of the parotid gland is presented. The clinical, surgical, histologic, and radiologic features are described and discussed.

A Case of Sclerosing Polycystic Adenoma of the Parotid Gland.

Sclerosing polycystic adenoma (SPA) is a rare salivary gland tumor with about 100 cases reported in the literature. We describe a case of SPA in the parotid gland and review the diagnostic tools used for identifying SPA. A 24-year-old male with a two-year history of right-sided face mass, initially thought to be pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland after fine needle aspiration (FNA). Following superficial parotidectomy, histologic features were consistent with SPA. This case illustrates the challenge of pre-operative assessment for SPA. Recent study has suggested SPA is a neoplasm and defi

Parotid Tuberculosis as the Presenting Manifestation of Disseminated Disease in an Otherwise Asymptomatic HIV Patient.

Parotid tuberculosis is not widely described in the literature. Even though a rare presentation of a commonly occurring disease, it is still missed as a differential diagnosis and often mistaken for neoplasms, eventually leading to unnecessary surgical resections. Here, we present a case of a young lady with a slowly growing unilateral parotid mass along with matted, non-tender cervical, axillary, and inguinal lymphadenopathy, who was incidentally found to have HIV with a cluster of differentiation 4 (CD4) lymphocyte count of 38 per microliter. Fine needle aspiration revealed acid-fast bacilli

Parotid tail pleomorphic adenoma extending to the parapharyngeal space.

Parapharyngeal space tumors are rare, accounting for 0.5% of head and neck neoplasms. Most of them are benign and originate in the salivary glands, especially the pleomorphic adenoma. We presented a 47-year-old man with parotid tail pleomorphic adenoma extending to the parapharyngeal space. The patient applied to our clinic with the complaints of a painless mass on his neck and in his mouth for 3 months. After fine needle aspiration biopsy, the mass was diagnosed as pleomorphic adenoma. The patient was hospitalized and operated in our clinic. As we see in literature review, parapharyngeal spac

Basal cell adenoma of the sublingual gland.

Salivary gland tumors constitute about 3% to 4% of all head and neck neoplasms. Approximately 80% originate in the parotid gland, and they rarely present in the sublingual gland; however, a disproportionately large majority of sublingual gland tumors are malignant. Basal cell adenoma is a benign epithelial salivary gland tumor that appears to have unique histologic characteristics, different from those of mixed tumors, and has a predilection for development in the parotid and minor salivary glands. No case has ever been reported as arising from the sublingual gland in the otolaryngology litera

[Breast cancer and B cell malignant lymphoma associated with Sjögren'ssyndrome--a case report and review of literature in Japan].

It is well known that some patients with Sjögren's syndrome develop lymphoproliferative disorders. Approximately 60 cases of Sjögren's syndrome associated with malignant lymphoma, predominantly of B cell origin, have been reported in Japan. On the other hand, fourteen cases of non lymphoid malignant neoplasm, including six of thyroid cancer and four of gastric cancer, have been recently presented in Japanese literature. However, cases of double malignant neoplasms in Sjögren's syndrome are very rare. We reported a case of Sjögren's syndrome associated with breast cancer and B cell malignant ly
