The emergence of parvovirus B19 as a pathogen in acute encephalitis syndrome.

Despite scarcity of data, in recent years, human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) has been emerging as an important pathogen in acute encephalitis syndrome (AES). But, PVB19 virus is mostly looked for only after the exclusion of other common pathogens implicated in AES. Hence, this study was conducted to correlate clinical, radiological, and sequencing data to establish the crucial role of PVB19 in AES. Cerebrospinal fluid and/or serum samples were collected from AES patients as per WHO criteria and tested by ELISA, real-time PCR and bacterial culture sensitivity for various pathogens. PVB19 positive sa…

Virus-Host Interactions of Enteroviruses and Parvovirus B19 in Myocarditis.

Viral diseases are a major threat to modern society and the global health system. It is therefore of utter relevance to understand the way viruses affect the host as a basis to find new treatment solutions. The understanding of viral myocarditis (VMC) is incomplete and effective treatment options are lacking. This review will discuss the mechanism, effects, and treatment options of the most frequent myocarditis-causing viruses namely enteroviruses such as Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) and Parvovirus B19 (PVB19) on the human heart. Thereby, we focus on: 1. Viral entry: CVB3 use Coxsackievirus-Adenov…

Changes in choline and cholinesterase in saliva of dogs with parvovirus infection.

This study investigated the changes in choline (Ch) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) in saliva in canine parvovirosis (CP) as a model of sepsis, and their correlations with these analytes in serum and with other markers of inflammation such as white blood cell count (WBC) and serum C-reactive protein (CRP). A total of 30 dogs with CP were sampled for saliva and serum at presentation, and 10 healthy puppies were also sampled as controls. Salivary Ch was higher in dogs with CP (P < 0.001) showing a positive correlation with CRP, whereas no differences were observed in salivary BChE. This is the

Effect of Goose Parvovirus and Duck Circovirus Coinfection in Ducks.

INTRODUCTION: Coinfection of goose parvovirus (GPV) and duck circovirus (DuCV) occurs commonly in field cases of short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS). However, whether there is synergism between the two viruses in replication and pathogenicity remains undetermined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We established a coinfection model of GPV and DuCV in Cherry Valley ducks. Tissue samples were examined histopathologically. The viral loads in tissues were detected by qPCR, and the distribution of the virus in tissues was detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). RESULTS: Coinfection of GPV and DuCV signif…

An Outbreak of Human Parvovirus B19 Hidden by Dengue Fever.

BACKGROUND: Seasonal outbreaks of dengue often result in hundreds of dengue-suspected cases where a clinical diagnosis cannot be confirmed. Usually, during large outbreaks of dengue and other pathogens that can cause acute febrile illnesses, the search for secondary pathogens with similar disease outcomes is rare. METHODS: Using total RNA sequencing and targeted diagnostic assays, we discovered an outbreak of parvovirus B19 in dengue-suspected patients that occurred from November 2013 to February 2014. RESULTS: Of the 182 cases investigated, 63% were viremic for the B19 virus. Moreover, we f…

Parvovirus B19 infection during pregnancy and risks to the fetus.

Parvovirus B19 infects 1 to 5% of pregnant women, generally with normal pregnancy outcomes. During epidemics, the rate of infection is higher. Major congenital anomalies among offspring of infected mothers are rare, as the virus does not appear to be a significant teratogen. However, parvovirus B19 infection may cause significant fetal damage, and in rare cases, brain anomalies and neurodevelopmental insults, especially if infection occurs in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy. Parvovirus B19 is also an important cause of fetal loss, especially in the second half of pregnancy when spontaneous fet…

Parvovirus B19 infection as a cause of acute myositis in an adult.

Parvovirus B19 infection is often asymptomatic, but clinical expressions may include transient aplastic crisis, erythema infectiosum, non-immune hydrops fetalis, and chronic red cell aplasia. This virus has also been associated with rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune connective tissue diseases; however, we could not identify any acute adult myositis case developed after a Parvovirus B19 infection in the literature. For this reason, we would like to present a rare case of acute myositis developed after Parvovirus B19 infection. In patients presenting with symptoms of fever, rash on the l…

Bone lesions in an infant with congenital parvovirus b19 infection.

Bone lesions on radiographs of newborns often suggest congenital infections. Skeletal roentgenograms are recommended in the evaluation of suspected congenital syphilis, but bone lesions have been recognized in other congenital infections. We report the case of an infant with hydrops fetalis secondary to congenital parvovirus B19 infection who was found to have bone lesions in multiple long and axial bones on admission to the neonatal ICU. Both the infant and her mother were evaluated for other causes of congenital infection, but no other agents were identified. The bone lesions had nearly comp…

[Neutropenia and/or thrombocytopenia due to acute parvovirus B19 infection].

Erythema infectiosum (fifth disease) is the most common clinical presentation of acute parvovirus B19 infection in infancy. In healthy adults, most cases of infection are asymptomatic or accompanied by a flu-like syndrome like headaches and myalgia. Haematological manifestations are dominated by transient aplasia of erythroid progenitor cells which remains asymptomatic in most of non immunocompromised patients. Patients with sickle cell disease, thalassemia or other disorders associated with shortened red blood cell survival are at particular risk for marked anemia or red blood cell aplasia. I…

Association of parvovirus B19 infection and Hashimoto's thyroiditis in children.

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is a common autoimmune disorder of the thyroid gland. It has been linked to infections with hepatitis C, EBV, HTLV-1, and Yersinia enterocolitica. As parvovirus B19 has been associated with a wide spectrum of autoimmune diseases, we investigated the potential role of B19 infection in inducing Hashimoto's thyroiditis. Serum samples derived from 73 children and adolescents with Hashimoto's thyroiditis and from 73 age-matched controls were included in the study. The mean age of disease manifestation was 10 y 7 mo. All samples were analyzed for the presence of viral DNA and…

Evidence for evolution of canine parvovirus type 2 in Italy.

Two isolates of canine parvovirus (CPV) were obtained from dogs affected with severe haemorrhagic diarrhoea. Type 2b antigenic specificity was predicted by both antigenic analysis with monoclonal antibodies and PCR characterization with type-specific primers. Nevertheless, sequence analysis of the capsid protein-encoding gene revealed two amino acid changes. One of the changes affected position 426 (Asp to Glu), in a major antigenic site of the viral capsid, determining the replacement of a residue unique to CPV type 2b. The failure of established typing methods to distinguish this antigenic v…

Parvovirus infection of keratinocytes as a cause of canine erythema multiforme.

Erythema multiforme major was diagnosed in a dog with necrotizing parvoviral enteritis. Skin lesions consisted of ulceration of the footpads, pressure points, mouth, and vaginal mucosa; vesicles in the oral cavity; and erythematous patches on the abdomen and perivulvar skin. Microscopic examination of mucosal and haired skin specimens revealed lymphocyte-associated keratinocyte apoptosis at various levels of the epidermis. Basophilic cytoplasmic inclusions were seen in basal and suprabasal keratinocytes. Immunohistochemical staining, performed with canine parvovirus-2-specific monoclonal antib…

Parvovirus as a differential diagnosis of hydrops fetalis in the first trimester.

We report a case of fetal parvovirus B19 infection which appears to have resulted in hydrops in the first trimester. An ultrasound scan performed at the booking visit of a woman in the first trimester showed generalised oedema. Karyotyping to exclude a fetal abnormality was normal. Maternal radioimmunoassay serological investigations showed parvovirus B19 IgG and IgM. Post-mortem analysis revealed intranuclear inclusion bodies typical of parvovirus in the erythroid cells in the liver and in the myocardium.

Renal involvement of human parvovirus B19 in an immunocompetent host.

Human parvovirus B19, which is most commonly known to cause erythema infectiosum in children, is also known to cause infection in adults, with complications ranging from a self-limited polyarthropathy in immunocompetent patients to hydrops fetalis in pregnant women, transient aplastic crises in patients with chronic hemolytic anemias, and chronic aplastic anemia in immunocompromised hosts. We describe a previously healthy immunocompetent woman who presented with manifestations of acute parvovirus B19 infection.
