An Unusual Presentation of Mycotic Popliteal Artery Pseudoaneurysm due to Pasteurella multocida Infection.

Pasteurella multocida , a zoonotic infectious pathogen, is a rare cause of mycotic aneurysms in human hosts. A 76-year-old man was admitted at our emergency unit for a superinfection of his right limb. The patient was initially treated for a knee arthritis. After a first-line antibiotherapy, the patient was referred to the vascular department for the management of a right acute limb ischemia. The work-up revealed a ruptured pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery. The ruptured artery was surgically explanted, and a femoropopliteal bypass was then performed. Pasteurella multocida was detected af…

Spinal epidural abscess caused by Pasteurella multocida mimicking aortic dissection: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) forms part of the normal flora of many animals. Although it is a common causative agent of skin and soft tissue infection after an animal bite or scratch, in rare cases it can cause spinal infections in humans. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old immunocompetent woman presented with fever and sudden onset of severe back pain mimicking aortic dissection. No findings related to the pain were revealed on enhanced computed tomography or initial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the spine. The patient was found to be bacteremic with P. multocida, alt…

Pasteurella multocida vertebral osteomyelitis, myositis and epidural abscess in a diabetic cirrhotic patient.

Pasteurella multocida is frequently associated with soft tissue infections related to animal bites or scratches. These infections are usually mild but can lead to serious complications especially in high-risk patients. We present a chronic Pasteurella. multocida vertebral osteomyelitis with extensive spondylodiscitis, myositis and epidural abscess in a patient with diabetes and liver cirrhosis. Pasteurella multocida should be suspected in bone and soft tissue infections even if the site of infection is distant to the site of the animal bite, scratch or lick, especially in high-risk patients.

Pasteurella multocida multiple intrapelvic abscesses in a young woman with uterine cervical cancer.

Pasteurella multocida, a zoonotic pathogen in humans, is known to be associated with skin and soft tissue infections following animal bites, but rarely causes visceral infections. We report a case of P. multocida-associated multiple intrapelvic abscesses in a young woman with uterine cervical cancer. A 29-year-old unmarried woman was referred to us because of prolonged high fever accompanying abdominal pain with muscular guarding. She had a domestic cat but denied of any bites or scratches before that. Computed tomography demonstrated ascites and multiple abscesses around her uterus. Her condi…

Draft Genome Sequence of a Virulent Strain of Pasteurella Multocida Isolated From Alpaca.

Pasteurella multocida is one of the most frequently isolated bacteria in acute pneumonia cases, being responsible for high mortality rates in Peruvian young alpacas, with consequent social and economic costs. Here we report the genome sequence of P. multocida strain UNMSM, isolated from the lung of an alpaca diagnosed with pneumonia, in Peru. The genome consists of 2,439,814 base pairs assembled into 82 contigs and 2,252 protein encoding genes, revealing the presence of known virulence-associated genes (ompH, ompA, tonB, tbpA, nanA, nanB, nanH, sodA, sodC, plpB and toxA). Further analysis coul…

Deadly case of Pasteurella multocida aortitis and mycotic aneurysm following a cat bite.

Animal bites are frequently encountered in the emergency department (ED). Aortitis leading to mycotic abdominal aortic aneurysm is a rare and potentially deadly complication of Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) following an animal bite. We present the case of a 68-year-old male who presented to the ED after falling at home. He complained of weakness and abdominal pain. He was in septic shock and was treated empirically with broad-spectrum antibiotics and intravenous fluids. He reported previous antibiotic treatment of a cellulitis secondary to a cat bite injury to his right thumb four weeks…

Post viper bite Pasteurella multocida necrotizing fasciitis complicates with septicaemia and renal failure.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare, severe and rapidly progressive life-threatening clinical disease which is commonly caused by streptococci. However, the disease caused by Pasteurella multocida is infrequently reported. Here, we report a rare case of a 85-year-old Malay man who developed septicaemia secondary to necrotizing fasciitis post viper bite. P. multocida was isolated from pus, tissue and blood cultures. A post viper bite was the only risk factor and to the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of P. multocida necrotizing fasciitis secondary to viper bite.

Carboxyl terminus heterogeneity of type IV fimbrial subunit protein of Pasteurella multocida isolates.

Pasteurella multocida, a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen, known to affect a wide range of domestic as well as wild animal and avian species throughout the world by causing either systemic or localized infections termed as 'pasteurellosis'. P. multocida isolates are known to possess type IV fimbriae (pili) as one of the major virulence factors based on their role in adhesion to host surfaces and subsequent pathogenesis. In the present study, ptfA gene of Indian P. multocida isolates (n = 8) originated from different animal (buffalo, sheep, goat, pig) and avian host species (chicken, turkey, du…

Identification and molecular cloning of a heparosan synthase from Pasteurella multocida type D.

Pasteurella multocida Type D, a causative agent of atrophic rhinitis in swine and pasteurellosis in other domestic animals, produces an extracellular polysaccharide capsule that is a putative virulence factor. It was reported previously that the capsule was removed by treating microbes with heparin lyase III. We molecularly cloned a 617-residue enzyme, pmHS, which is a heparosan (nonsulfated, unepimerized heparin) synthase. Recombinant Escherichia coli-derived pmHS catalyzes the polymerization of the monosaccharides from UDP-GlcNAc and UDP-GlcUA. Other structurally related sugar nucleotides di…

Antibody reactions after aerogenous or subcutaneous immunization of pigs with Pasteurella multocida antigens.

Depending upon the antigens used and the initial titres, subcutaneous immunization of weaner pigs by means of a temperature-sensitive mutant of live Pasteurella multocida (serovar A), resulted in a significant rise of the level of specific IgG antibody already present in blood serum, but not in lung lavage fluid, and a specific stimulation of lung clearance as compared to non-immunized controls. Aerogenous immunization of a total of 108 animals in 18 experiments did not influence serum antibody titres but produced a significant rise in lung antibodies and P. multocida clearance as compared to …

Exposure to domestic cats: risk factor for Pasteurella multocida peritonitis in liver cirrhosis?

Pasteurella multocida is most commonly associated with acute skin and soft tissue infections following an animal bite or scratch. Peritonitis caused by P. multocida in patients with cirrhosis is rarely reported. We present a case of spontaneous bacterial peritonitis with P. multocida in a patient with cirrhosis, squamous cell cancer of the head and neck, and nontraumatic domestic cat exposure. Nasopharyngeal colonization with P. multocida, with subsequent transient bacteremia and seeding of the peritoneum in immunocompromised (particularly cirrhotic) cat-owners, could play an important pathoge…

Characterization of a Pasteurella multocida type a strain associated with a severe bronchopneumonia outbreak in gilts.

BACKGROUND: In pigs, Pasteurella multocida (P. multocida) serotypes A, B and D are causative agents of pneumonia, hemorrhagic septicemia and progressive rhinitis atrophicans, respectively. In the case of bronchopneumonia in pigs, P. multocida is generally regarded as an opportunistic pathogen following predisposing infectious agents. This study was initiated by an outbreak of bronchopneumonia in gilts associated with high mortality during lactation. Objectives of this study were to characterize the P. multocida isolate and systemic humoral immunity in gilts against this pathogen. RESULTS: Bac…

Resveratrol inhibits the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and enhances the resistance of chickens to Pasteurella multocida.

Pasteurella multocida is a zoonotic pathogen which can cause fowl cholera in poultry industry and result in serious economic losses around the world. Resveratrol is a natural polyphenolic compound with a variety of pharmacological effects. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of resveratrol on the NLRP3 inflammasome pathway and the resistance of chickens to Pasteurella multocida. It was found that resveratrol didn't affect the proliferation of chicken HD11 macrophages and the growth of Pasteurella multocida with a final concentration of 32 μg/mL, the minimum inhibitory concen…

Immunogenicity and protection of a Pasteurella multocida strain with a truncated lipopolysaccharide outer core in ducks.

Pasteurella multocida infection frequently causes fowl cholera outbreaks, leading to huge economic losses to the poultry industry worldwide. This study developed a novel live attenuated P. multocida vaccine strain for ducks named PMZ2 with deletion of the gatA gene and first four bases of the hptE gene, both of which are required for the synthesis of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) outer core. PMZ2 produced a truncated LPS phenotype and was highly attenuated in ducks with a > 105-fold higher LD50 than the wild-type strain. PMZ2 colonized the blood and organs, including the spleen, liver and lung,…

Second-generation sequencing assistance in the diagnosis of Pasteurella multocida empyema: A case report.

Pasteurella multocida empyema is rare and easy to be misdiagnosed. An 81-year-old male patient showed symptoms with cough, sputum, and fever for 3 days. Community-acquired pneumonia was diagnosed firstly. After anti-infection treatment, the patient was still in fever. Chest radiography showed pleural effusion, closed thoracic drainage was performed and the reddish-brown fluid was drained out. The second-generation sequencing was performed on pleural fluid and Pasteurella multocida was detected. Pasteurella multocida has strict requirements for growth conditions and it difficult to cultivate. T…

Pasteurella multocida pneumonia in an immunocompetent patient: Case report and systematic review of literature.

Pasteurella multocida infection is most commonly associated with the immunocompromised, mostly in the form of soft-tissue infection, although other sites of infection are still possible and have been reported in the immunocompetent. We report a case of an immunocompetent male with a history of exposure to carrier organisms without portal of entry who developed P. multocida pneumonia with bacteremia. We undertook a focused review of literature of previously reported cases of P. multocida pneumonia in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This literature review supports the use of…

Purpura fulminans and severe sepsis due to Pasteurella multocida infection in an immunocompetent patient.

A 75-year-old woman was admitted into the intensive care unit, with severe sepsis and renal failure. She developed purpura fulminans (PF) of bilateral upper and lower extremities along with gangrene on the tips of her fingers and toes. Blood cultures confirmed Pasteurella multocida as the causative organism. Despite aggressive supportive measures, the patient remained dependent on high doses of vasopressors and the gangrene progressed. She ultimately succumbed to her underlying severe sepsis. PF is a rare and fatal dermatological emergency commonly seen in children, but it also occurs in adult…
