Participation in physical activity in patients 1-4 years post total joint replacement in the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: To address both the growing burden of joint disease and the gaps in medical access in developing nations, medical relief organizations have begun to launch programs to perform total joint replacement (TJR) on resident populations in developing countries. One outcome of TJR of particular interest is physical activity (PA) since it is strongly linked to general health. This study evaluates the amount of postoperative participation in PA in low-income patients who received total joint replacement in the Dominican Republic and identifies preoperative predictors of postoperative PA leve

Connecting patients, researchers and clinical genetics services: the experiences of participants in the Australian Ovarian Cancer Study (AOCS).

Population-based genetic research may produce information that has clinical implications for participants and their family. Researchers notify participants or their next of kin (NoK) about the availability of genetic information via a notification letter; however, many subsequently do not contact a family cancer centre (FCC) to clarify their genetic status. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine research participants' experience of receiving a notification letter and the factors that influenced contact with an FCC. Twenty-five semi-structured interviews were conducted with researc

[The medical team approach to the suicide--attempted patients by taking drugs or chemicals--participation of the medical social workers].

There are many suicide-attempted patients admitted to the critical care medical center of the Kitakyushu General Hospital. Suicide-attempted patients need psychosocial intervention from the beginning of their hospitalization, because they have their own psychosocial problems. Accordingly, medical social workers (MSW) give psychosocial assistance to the patients in our critical care medical center. In 1997, we participated in the treatment of 53 patients out of 64 suicide-attempted patients. Forty-four patients committed suicide by ingesting some drugs or poisons, and 9 patients committed suici

Barriers to social participation among patients with hemophilia: a qualitative study using social-ecological systems theory.

BACKGROUND: Social participation greatly determines health-related quality of life, while people with hemophilia face severe social engagement restrictions. Current studies only explore such barriers from single dimensions including joint function, employment and mental distress, lacking a comprehensive social-ecological perspective. Based on social-ecological systems theory, this study systematically analyzes multi-level barriers to social participation among Chinese hemophilia patients to support integrated nursing intervention development. METHODS: A descriptive phenomenological qualitativ

Laboratory Environments Mask Gait Differences Between Healthy Participants and Patients With Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction.

Previous work suggests that people with mobility impairments move differently in the traditional gait laboratory than in natural environments, but the extent to which this possible divergence may have limited understanding of gait following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) remains unknown. We hypothesized that 1) patients following ACLR walk more asymmetrically in daily life than in the laboratory and 2) differences between patients following ACLR and individuals with no gait pathologies would be more pronounced in daily life than in the laboratory. Twelve participants (six pos

Efficacy and safety of finerenone in patients with chronic kidney disease: an individual participant data pooled analysis (INFINITY).

BACKGROUND: Overactivation of the mineralocorticoid receptor is a common pathway for chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression across multiple disease aetiologies. Finerenone, a non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor antagonist, has shown kidney and cardiovascular benefits in CKD due to type 2 diabetes, but its efficacy and safety across disease aetiologies, and levels of glycaemia, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), and albuminuria have not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of finerenone across the spectrum of CKD. METHODS: We conducted

Living with dialysis: Activities of daily life, social participation, and quality of life among hemodialysis patients in Chhattisgarh.

BACKGROUND: Chhattisgarh is one of the poorest states in Central India, and a large part of the state is underdeveloped. In this state, there is a recent increase in unusual high number of deaths due to kidney diseases. Renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis [HD]) is required when chronic kidney disease patients reach a stage of end stage renal disease. Most of the dialysis patients are referred from periphery dialysis centers to this hospital for tertiary care and follow-up. Dialysis patients often experience physical and social limitations which give rise to negative psychological experienc

Social participation and its associated factors among head and neck cancer patients: a cross‑sectional study.

BACKGROUND: The special anatomical location and side effects of head and neck tumors (such as appearance change and dysphagia) can easily cause social isolation and psychological problems in patients. Social participation, as an important rehabilitation index that affects their quality of life and prognosis, is rarely studied in China, and the associated factors remain underexplored. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the social participation level of patients with head and neck tumors and explore its associated factors, to provide a reference for formulating targeted interv

Health literacy in patients participating in cardiac rehabilitation: A prospective cohort study with pre-post-test design.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Adherence to recommendations regarding medical treatment and healthy behaviour serve as a significant challenge for patients experiencing a cardiac event. Optimizing the patients' health literacy (HL) may be crucial to meet this challenge and has gained increased focus the last decade. Despite cardiac rehabilitation (CR) being a central part of the treatment of patients experiencing a cardiac event, such programs have not been evaluated regarding HL. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe and evaluate HL in patients participating in CR. METHODS: A prospective co
