The pectoralis minor length test: a study of the intra-rater reliability and diagnostic accuracy in subjects with and without shoulder symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Postural abnormality and muscle imbalance are thought to contribute to pain and a loss of normal function in the upper body. A shortened pectoralis minor muscle is commonly identified as part of this imbalance. Clinical tests have been recommended to test for shortening of this muscle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the intra-rater reliability and diagnostic accuracy of the pectoralis minor length test. METHODS: Measurements were made in 45 subjects with and 45 subjects without shoulder symptoms. Measurements were made with the subjects lying in supine. In this position the

When Rewiring Fails-The Enduring Role of the Pectoralis Major Flap in Sternal Wound Reconstruction.

Background: Deep sternal wound infections (DSWIs) remain a serious complication after median sternotomy, often requiring complex wound management strategies. While modern approaches include vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) and plating techniques, the pedicled pectoralis major muscle flap (PMF) continues to play a pivotal role in surgical reconstruction, especially in cases with sternal destruction or osteomyelitis. Methods: In this retrospective single-centre analysis, 166 patients with DSWI following cardiac surgery were reviewed. Clinical data, comorbidities, laboratory parameters, and surgical

Pectoralis major stiffness and stretch response in breast cancer survivors after breast conserving surgery and radiation therapy.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer survivors frequently experience shoulder dysfunction following radiation therapy, which may be related to a stiffer pectoralis major. However, intrinsic muscle stiffness at slack length and the stretch response across the shoulder abduction range of motion remain unknown. METHODS: We recruited 20 female breast cancer survivors treated with breast-conserving surgery, sentinel node biopsy and radiation therapy 12-60 months prior, alongside 19 cancer-free controls. The sternocostal region of the pectoralis major was imaged using ultrasound shear wave elastography. Shear

[Poland's syndrome and spontaneous pneumothorax, a rare association].

Poland's syndrome is an uncommon congenital anomaly characterized by unilateral absence of pectoralis major muscle, ipsilateral hand abnormalities, and a variety of associated anomalies. The incidence of the syndrome ranges from 1/7000 to 1/100.000. The syndrome is observed more frequently in man than in woman. A 22-years-old man who was admitted with a history of chest pain and dyspnea to our emergency department. On examination, breath sounds were decreased on the right side, there was an absence of the pectoralis major muscle, a shortness on the right upper limb and a restriction on the rig

Poland syndrome in a neonate: report of one case.

Poland syndrome is an infrequent disease that presents in newborn infants and features an incidence of about one in 7,000 to one in 100,000 live births. The clinical features include an absence of the costosternal portion of the pectoralis major muscle, hypoplasia and/or aplasia of the ipsilateral breast or nipple, hypoplasia of subcutaneous tissue, abnormalities of the rib cage and upper extremity anomalies. We present a male newborn suffering Poland syndrome who featured a depressed left chest wall with respiratory distress. Ultrasonography of the chest revealed the absence of a section of p

Repair of large pharyngeal defects--new applications of split thickness skin graft.

Stomach and pectoralis major myocutaneous flaps have both been effective in providing hypopharyngeal lining and muscle bulk to close large oropharyngeal fistulae. Their robust musculature has also proven an ideal bed for the application of a split-thickness skin graft, when dealing with the replacement of major anterior neck skin defects. In addition, the pectoralis myocutaneous flap, when half tubed, is an excellent method of reconstructing resected tongue base, markedly improving the function of tongue remnant.

Prospect of early vascular tone and satellite cell modulations on white striping muscle myopathy.

Polyphasic myodegeneration potentially causes severe physiological and metabolic disorders in the breast muscle of fast-growing broiler chickens. To date, the etiology of recent muscle myopathies, such as the white striping (WS) phenotype, is still unknown. White striping-affected breast meats compromise the water holding capacity and predispose muscle to poor vascular tone, leading to the deterioration of meat qualities. Herein, this review article provides insight on the complexities around chicken breast myopathies: (i) the etiologies of WS occurrence in chicken; (ii) the metabolic changes

Restoration of elbow flexion in arthrogryposis multiplex congenita.

In 15 patients with arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, 18 operations were performed to improve elbow function. These operations were for seven cases of pectoralis transfer, seven cases of anterior transfer of triceps, two cases of posterior elbow release, and two cases of Steindler flexoroplasty. Results were evaluated on two simple criteria: single-hand feeding and improved elbow joint motion. These criteria showed that the pectoralis transfer was the most effective procedure.

Current Perspectives on Pectoralis Minor Syndrome: A Narrative Review.

Thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) encompasses a group of disorders caused by compression of the brachial plexus or subclavian vessels as they pass from the neck to the upper limb. Among its variants, pectoralis minor syndrome (PMS) is increasingly recognized as a distinct cause of neurovascular compression beneath the pectoralis minor muscle. PMS typically presents with anterior chest wall pain, paresthesia, weakness, or upper-limb swelling, closely resembling neurogenic or vascular TOS. Diagnosis relies on detailed history and physical examination, with ultrasound-guided pectoralis minor block s

Hepatic exstrophy complicating Poland's anomaly.

Poland's anomaly is comprised of a constellation of anomalies. To be included in the syndrome, a child must have a deficiency of the pectoralis major and minor muscles and an associated anomaly of either the ipsilateral breast or hand. Associated defects may include syndactyly osseous and cartilagenous costal aplasia and adactyly. A case of hepatic exstrophy through a full-thickness chest wall defect in an infant with Poland's anomaly is reported.

Turkey muscle growth and focal myopathy.

Muscle structure and blood enzyme activity were studied to 16 wk of age in lines of turkeys selected for rapid growth. The body and carcass weights were measured, frozen sections of breast and leg muscles examined, and plasma creatine kinase (CK) levels determined. Muscle weights were usually proportional to BW except for the relatively larger superficial pectoralis (SP) muscles in the most rapidly growing line. Damaged muscle fibers were found in all muscles examined, especially in the SP of the breast, the gastrocnemius (GA), and other muscles of the leg; these damages became more common fro

New method of preparing a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap with a skin paddle that includes the third intercostal perforating branch of the internal thoracic artery.

BACKGROUND: Although the use of free flaps has become a major option for head and neck reconstruction, the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap still plays an important role because of its advantages and its convenience as a pedicle flap located adjacent to head and neck lesions. However, there remain two problems with the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap, namely, the difficulty in preparing a small, thin skin paddle with stable blood circulation for small defects and, particularly for female cases, sacrifice of the breast. The authors report a new method of preparing a pectoralis major myocut

Liposarcoma of the chest wall mimicking a breast mass in a man: a case report.

We report a rare case of dedifferentiated liposarcoma in a man. A 60-year-old male patient presented with a left mass involving the whole breast area, with no lymph node enlargement, growing during a one-year-period. Imaging studies revealed a fat-containing mixed-density mass apparently associated with the pectoralis major muscle. A core biopsy was performed that yielded a diagnosis of a well-differentiated liposarcoma. Further tests to check for metastases were ordered and no distant disease was found. Left mastectomy with en bloc resection of the pectoralis major muscle was performed. The p

Surface respiratory electromyography and dyspnea in acute heart failure patients.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Dyspnea is the most common symptom among hospitalized patients with heart failure (HF) but besides dyspnea questionnaires (which reflect the subjective patient sensation and are not fully validated in HF) there are no measurable physiological variables providing objective assessment of dyspnea in a setting of acute HF patients. Studies performed in respiratory patients suggest that the measurement of electromyographic (EMG) activity of the respiratory muscles with surface electrodes correlates well with dyspnea. Our aim was to test the hypothesis that respiratory m

Surgical treatment of pectus carinatum.

Pectus carinatum, just like its sister deformity pectus excavatum, is a condition with an undefined developmental mechanism and debated surgical techniques. Elongation of the costal cartilages and elongation and anterior displacement of the sternum characterize the different varieties of pectus carinatum. Repair of the anomaly involves positional correction as well as the shortening of the sternum and the maintenance of its corrected position by action of the rectus abdominis and pectoralis muscles.

Static and Dynamic Stabilization of the Shoulder After Total Scapulectomy in an Electric Burn Patient.

An otherwise healthy 49-year-old man experienced a high-voltage electrical injury to the left shoulder resulting in total scapulectomy, partial calviculectomy, and a substantial soft tissue defect. The majority of the muscles around his shoulder were debrided because of necrosis, with only the pectoralis and latissimus dorsi muscles remaining attached to the humerus. Surprisingly, the patient's brachial plexus remained intact, and his left elbow, wrist, and hand function were preserved. A novel combination of 3 static and dynamic suspension techniques were used to stabilize his shoulder and pr

Resection and reconstruction of giant cervical metastatic cancer using a pectoralis major muscular flap transfer: A prospective study of 16 patients.

If not promptly or properly treated, certain cervical metastatic cancers that develop from unknown primary tumors may rapidly grow into giant tumors that can invade the blood vessels, muscle and skin. The present study examined the feasibility and efficacy of radical neck dissection combined with reconstruction using the pectoralis major myocutaneous flap for the treatment of giant cervical metastatic cancers that have developed from unknown primary tumors and have invaded the skin. A total of 16 patients who met the inclusion criteria were subjected to radical neck dissection to adequately re

Poland's anomaly. Natural history and long-term results of chest wall reconstruction in 33 patients.

Poland's anomaly is an uncommon congenital aberration of the chest wall characterized by absence of the pectoralis major muscle and other nearby musculoskeletal components. In this series, a wide spectrum of thoracic deformities was associated with the Poland anomaly, ranging from segmental agenesis of the ribs, sternum, and nearby muscles, to simple aplasia of the pectoralis major muscle. Although little disability was associated with the syndrome, the patients primarily sought operative correction due to the asymmetry and their perception of adverse cosmesis. Over a 10-year period, 53 operat
