Propofol Versus Sevoflurane Anesthesia for Acute Postoperative Pain Management in Pediatric Adenotonsillectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pain following pediatric adenotonsillectomy is prevalent, frequently severe, and often inadequately managed. The effectiveness of propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia in acute postoperative pain management is unknown. METHODS: We conducted a single-blind, randomized controlled trial to examine the postoperative analgesic effectiveness of propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia. 144 children aged 2-7 years were enrolled and randomly assigned to receive either propofol or sevoflurane anesthesia, with 142 completing the study. The primary outcome was the proportion of acute postoperative pa

Remimazolam anesthesia in pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for congenital heart disease: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are used in pediatric patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) because of their mild hemodynamic depressant effects. A novel short-acting benzodiazepine, remimazolam, is expected to be suitable for these patients. We examined the characteristics of remimazolam anesthesia in pediatric patients with CHD undergoing cardiac catheterization. METHODS: This single-center retrospective study included pediatric patients undergoing cardiac catheterization for CHD. The primary outcome was the remimazolam dose for loss of consciousness. Secondary outcomes included the mean

Severe Complications after General Anesthesia versus Sedation during Pediatric Diagnostic Cardiac Catheterization for Ventricular Septal Defect.

Pediatric cardiac catheterization requires unconsciousness and immobilization through general anesthesia or sedation. This study aimed to compare the occurrence of severe complications in pediatric diagnostic cardiac catheterization for ventricular septal defect between general anesthesia and sedation performed under similar institutional environments. Using the Japanese Diagnosis Procedure Combination database, we retrospectively identified pediatric patients (aged <2 years) who underwent diagnostic cardiac catheterization for ventricular septal defect between July 2010 and March 2019. The co

Safety of Non-Operating Room Anesthesia With Propofol Sedation in Three Pediatric Patients With Central Sleep Apnea.

Children with central sleep apnea may require sedation for procedures, including brain imaging as part of the evaluation of apnea. However, the safety of deep sedation without a protected airway is not known in this patient population. In this case series, we present 3 children with central sleep apnea who were sedated with propofol for brain imaging in a non-operating room setting. All 3 did well with no complications; those with a home oxygen requirement were on oxygen during the procedure but none experienced apnea, desaturation, or respiratory distress. While obstructive sleep apnea is a k
