The probabilistic pool punishment proportional to the difference of payoff outperforms previous pool and peer punishment.

The public goods game is a multiplayer version of the prisoner's dilemma game. In the public goods game, punishment on defectors is necessary to encourage cooperation. There are two types of punishment: peer punishment and pool punishment. Comparing pool punishment with peer punishment, pool punishment is disadvantageous in comparison with peer punishment because pool punishment incurs fixed costs especially if second-order free riders (those who invest in public goods but do not punish defectors) are not punished. In order to eliminate such a flaw of pool punishment, this study proposes the p

Understanding Youth Perceptions of Neighborhood Disorder: The Role of Conduct Problems.

While research addresses neighborhood disorder as leading to conduct problems, the role of individual-level differences in shaping adolescent perceptions of neighborhood has been overlooked. Data on youth, over-selected for childhood conduct problems (N = 744, 58% childhood conduct problems, 47% girls), were used to examine the link between conduct problems (time 1: Mean age = 12.23) and perceived neighborhood disorder (time 3: M = 14.30). The mediating role of delinquent friends, peer victimization, depressive symptoms, and observer-rated neighborhood disorder (time 2: M = 13.23) were also te

Longitudinal examination of resilience among child welfare-involved adolescents: The roles of caregiver-child relationships and deviant peer affiliation.

Despite growing attention to resilience following childhood maltreatment, it remains unclear how the development of resilience unfolds over time among child welfare-involved adolescents. Further, little is known about the immediate and enduring effects of two important attachments in children's lives, namely caregiver-child relationship and deviant peer affiliation, on resilience development over time. This study sought to examine the ways in which caregiver-child relationships and deviant peer affiliation shape developmental trajectories of resilience among child welfare-involved youth. Data

Sexual orientation labelling: relational processes of trans identity development.

This article explores the intersection of gender identity and sexual orientation in the narrative experiences of trans identified young people. Data were collected in collaboration with trans youth community centres in the USA, Canada and Ireland. Axial and selective coding procedures were used to examine the interplay between developing sexual orientation and gender identity. The relational language used by participants when explaining the process of negotiating and renegotiating sexual orientation prompted us to ground theory building in a framework of intersectionality, feminist concepts of

"It'll Never Be Safe, But You Can Limit the Harms". Exploring Adolescents' Strategies to Reduce Harms Associated with Psychoactive Substance Use.

Introduction: Harm reduction strategies are behaviors that may be applied in order to reduce adverse consequences associated with psychoactive substance use. Adolescents who use substances make up a large population that may benefit from applying such strategies. However, previous research in this area has focused on adults. Therefore, the purpose of this qualitative study was to describe and examine harm reduction strategies among adolescents who use psychoactive substances. Methods: Semi-structured individual interviews were conducted with 72 adolescents of equal sex distribution (aged 17-18

[Production of knowledge using data collected by associations of patients: The fibromyalgia example].

To respond to the social challenge of medical knowledge democratisation, numerous initiatives have been developed: information, training or consultation of patients or research applications funded by associations of patients. Only a few numbers of collaborations are initiated by the persons directly involved (patients and relatives) or fulfill association research need. We have adopted and tested such an approach with the French fibromyalgia association (Fibromyalgie France). Our work demonstrates the interest to use data collected by associations of patients to answer to their questioning or

A Paradigm for Understanding Adolescent Social Anxiety with Unfamiliar Peers: Conceptual Foundations and Directions for Future Research.

Adolescents who experience social anxiety concerns often display symptoms and impairments when interacting with unfamiliar peers. For adolescent clients, reducing symptoms and impairments within these interactions comprises a key treatment target within exposure-based therapies for social anxiety. Recent work on mechanisms of change in exposure-based therapies highlights the need for therapeutic exposures to simulate real-world manifestations of anxiety-provoking social situations. Yet, researchers encounter difficulty with gathering ecologically valid data about social interactions with unfam

Implementing peer recovery coaching and improving outcomes for substance use disorders in underserved communities.

INTRODUCTION: The Peer Recovery Expansion Project (PREP) was designed to expand outreach and deliver enhanced treatment services via peer-recovery coaches for individuals with substance use disorder (SUD) and limited access to healthcare. METHODS: PREP was implemented in low-socioeconomic areas with historic challenges to accessing SUD treatment. Services were provided to 153 clients through tailored cultural responsiveness, use of peer-based recovery coaching, and development of a Recovery Support Network. Outcome data were collected using the Government Performance and Reporting Act tool at

Moderating Effects of Gender Among Collegiate Student-Athletes Receiving a Novel Peer Concussion Education Program.

BACKGROUND: More than 460,000 female and male student-athletes compete in college sports each year, with 5.5 concussions reported per 1,000 athlete exposures. The majority of these concussions occurred during competition and are somewhat more likely to be reported by female athletes. AIMS: To evaluate moderating effects of gender differences in response to a Peer Concussion Education Program (PCEP). METHOD: A total of 1,100 male and 511 female student-athletes from 60 teams (30 experimental, 30 control) representing all National Collegiate Athletic Association divisions from high-concussive

Participation in Peer-Play Activities Among Children With Specific Learning Disability: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Children with a specific learning disability (SLD) have deficits in social and academic competence and executive function (EF). In this study, we used the Model of Human Occupation to investigate the effect of peer-play activities on occupational values and competence as well as EF skills (i.e., behavior regulation and metacognition) in children with SLD. METHOD: Forty-nine children ages 7-11 yr with SLD were randomly assigned to the peer-play and control groups. Outcome measures were the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function and the Child Occupational Self-Assessment (CO

Mediating the Maltreatment-Delinquency Relationship: The Role of Triad Gang Membership.

The primary aim of this article is to examine the role of triad affiliation in mediating the relationship between child maltreatment (neglect, punishment, emotional abuse, and sexual abuse) and delinquency among active young gang members in Hong Kong. A sample of 177 gang members aged 12 to 24 was recruited to complete a questionnaire with the assistance of a youth outreach social work team. Neglect was identified as the most common form of maltreatment, followed by emotional abuse, punishment, and sexual abuse. Mediation analyses confirmed that triad affiliation acts as a mediating variable i

Children's peer violence perpetration and victimization: Prevalence and associated factors among school children in Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: Child peer violence is a global problem and seriously impacts children's physical and psychological health, and their education outcomes. There are few research studies on children's peer violence available in South Asian countries, particularly in Afghanistan. This paper describes the prevalence of children's peer violence perpetration and victimization and associated factors among school children in Afghanistan. METHODS: A total of 770 children were recruited into a baseline study conducted as part of an intervention evaluation in 11 schools (seven girls' and four boys' schools)

Correlates of gambling on high-school grounds.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined adolescent gambling on school grounds (GS+) and how such behavior was associated with gambling-related attitudes. Further, we examined whether GS+ moderated associations between at-risk problem-gambling (ARPG) and gambling behaviors related to gambling partners. METHOD: Participants were 1988 high-school students who completed survey materials. Demographic, perceptions, attitudes, and gambling variables were stratified by problem-gambling severity (ARPG versus recreational gambling) and GS+ status. Chi-square and adjusted logistic regression models were used to

Understanding school climate, aggression, peer victimization, and bully perpetration: contemporary science, practice, and policy.

Existing scholarship suggests that classroom practices, teacher attitudes, and the broader school environment play a critical role in understanding the rates of student reports of aggression, bullying, and victimization as well as correlated behaviors. A more accurate understanding of the nature, origins, maintenance, and prevalence of bullying and other aggressive behavior requires consideration of the broader social ecology of the school community. However, studies to date have predominantly been cross-sectional in nature, or have failed to reflect the social-ecological framework in their me

Peer influence on bulimic symptoms in college students.

This longitudinal study examined the influence of peer selection and socialization on bulimic symptoms in college students. Ninety-eight participants completed measures of bulimic symptoms, self-esteem, perfectionism, and impulsivity in the spring and fall of 2003. Peer influence was assessed by examining similarity among selected peers, unselected peers, and nonpeers over time. Among selected peers, bulimic symptoms demonstrated patterns of socialization, self-esteem and perfectionism demonstrated patterns of selection, and these personality traits longitudinally predicted changes in bulimic

Supervising and supporting student nurses in clinical placements: the peer support initiative.

The provision of appropriate clinical supervision and mentorship in nursing students is acknowledged to be problematic for a variety of reasons (i.e., inadequate staffing levels or heavy workloads). The need to initiate and assess more suitable supervision and mentorship programmes is imperative. This report examines the dynamics of a student peer support supervision programme initiated in the School of Nursing at the University of Nottingham, whereby senior students are supervising and supporting junior students in their clinical placements. This scheme is under the overall supervision of a c

Effect of peer administered consequences upon articulatory responses of speech-defective children.

Twenty second-grade lisping children were taught to articulate /s/ and /z/ correctly during three training sessions. Two weeks later, each child was asked to invite three classmates to a fourth session in which the classmates could earn tokens contingent upon the target child's correct articulation of /s/ and /z/ sounds. A response cost procedure was initiated with one group of 10 target children and the invited peers. In addition to tokens given for correct responses, tokens were removed following each of the target child's incorrect /s/ or /z/ responses. This condition resulted in the presen

Cultural transmission of attitudes and behaviours from parents, peers and grandparents.

This study investigates how attitudes and behaviours are transmitted across generations and social networks, focusing on the relative influence of parents, grandparents, and peers. Building on the influential work of Cavalli-Sforza and Feldman (1982), we aimed to disentangle vertical and horizontal pathways of cultural transmission and assess their contribution to the stability and variation of cultural traits in a contemporary population. We conducted a large-scale survey involving 1905 university students in Australia and 4000 of their parents, grandparents, and friends. Participants reporte

Peer and familial influences on the association between behavioral inhibition and trajectories of social anxiety symptoms across adolescence.

Behavioral inhibition (BI) is one of the most reliable predictors of social anxiety, and both peers and family members play a key role in shaping this association. In a sample of adolescents enriched for elevated BI and social anxiety symptoms, we examined (1) the moderating role of familial and close peer relationship qualities on associations between BI, concurrent social anxiety symptoms, and social anxiety symptom trajectories and (2) indirect effects of adolescent BI on social anxiety through close peer and familial relationship qualities. Furthermore, we examined sex differences in these
