Does environment matter? A review of nonshared environment and eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Nonshared environmental influences are experiences that are unique to siblings reared in the same family. We review studies highlighting the importance of nonshared factors for the development of eating disorders and suggest areas for future research. METHODS: Findings from behavioral genetic studies of eating disorders as well as methodological issues are reviewed. RESULTS: Twin studies suggest that approximately 17%-46% of the variance in both anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) can be accounted for by nonshared environmental factors. Studies directly examining these

Influence of Demographic and Psychological Factors on Attitudes Toward Sport Betting Among Young Adults in Southwest Nigeria.

Prediction and wager on the outcome of games/matches are known as sports betting. Positive attitudes toward sports betting may, in the long run, predict sports betting behavior and gambling-related problems. This study, therefore, examined the influence of gender, age, sports betting knowledge and peer-based gambling on attitudes toward sports betting among young adults in Nigeria. The ex-post facto design was adopted in this cross-sectional survey. The participants were 749 students (42.9% females) of a large tertiary institution in southwest Nigeria. How Caregivers Make Meaning of Child Mental Health Problems: Toward Understanding Caregiver Strain and Help Seeking.

Family caregivers' conceptualizations of their child's emotional and behavioral problems (EBP) influence help-seeking for the child and caregiver strain. We analyzed 21 interviews with caregivers to explore their conceptualizations about the cause of their child's EBP, their experiences of strain, and their reported help-seeking behaviors. Caregivers had divergent conceptualizations of their child's EBP: 12 caregivers viewed the EBP as caused by a disorder and described the onset of symptoms as the central stressful event, whereas 9 caregivers described their child's problems as a response to

Network based associations between peer rejection and adolescent depression: evidence from general population and clinical samples.

BACKGROUND: Peer rejection is a significant risk factor for adolescent depression, but most studies have examined their associations treating them as unitary constructs. Considering their conceptional complexity, our study employs network analysis to examine the associations between different types of peer rejection and specific depressive symptoms at the dimension level and their changes from the general population to clinical samples. METHODS: A total of 23,995 adolescents from general population (primary dataset, 11,577 males, age = 13.90 ± 2.19) were recruited through online advertisement

Romantic relationships and adolescent depression in China: moderating effects of peer norms.

OBJECTIVE: Adolescent depression is a crucial determinant of an individual's developmental trajectories and long-term health-related quality of life. Romantic relationships are widely recognized as a risk factor of adolescent depression. Peer norms, as an important source of social influence in adolescence, have the potential to moderate the effects of romantic relationships. The present study aims to examine the moderating effects of peer norms, including descriptive norms and injunctive norms, on the association between romantic relationships and adolescent depression in China. METHODS: The

Cross-sectional association among passive social media use, peer attachment security, and restrained eating among Chinese college women: incorporating the sociocultural and attachment perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Restrained eating has often been studied from either sociocultural or attachment perspectives, but relatively few studies have examined how attachment-related factors may operate alongside sociocultural influences. Additionally, most studies have focused on Western populations, despite evidence suggesting that sociocultural influences on eating behaviors vary across cultures. Guided by both sociocultural and attachment theories, the present study examined how passive social media use and peer attachment security were related to restrained eating among Chinese college women, and whe

"I Am Not Struggling Alone": communicating support through peer mutual aid to reduce academic stress transmission and emotional contagion in large university classes.

Large university classes are important communication environments in which students observe, interpret, and exchange stress-related information. Academic stress may therefore spread not only through individual experience but also through interpersonal communication and social interpretation, and shared meaning-making processes. How students communicate about academic challenges, interpret peers' stress-related cues, and construct shared understandings of academic pressure may therefore influence whether stress becomes socially amplified or collectively managed. This study examined whether a bri

The mental health consumer movement and peer providers in Israel.

Self-help peer-support groups in Israel emerged in the 1980s and, over time, dynamically interacted and co-developed with the statutory mental health (MH) system. In this editorial, I outline historical milestones of how the evolution of the Israeli mental health system was influenced by the consumer movement. A brief depiction of the consumer movement history. At first, consumers operated outside of the mainstream MH system. Gradually, consumer groups and institutional personnel joined efforts towards community integration and enhancement of quality of life, pushing forward a person-centered

Why some women have an optimistic or a pessimistic bias about their breast cancer risk: experiences, heuristics, and knowledge of risk factors.

Perceived risk to a health problem is formed by inferential rules called heuristics and by comparative judgments that assess how one's risk compares to the risk of others. The purpose of this cross-sectional, community-based survey was to examine how experiences with breast cancer, knowledge of risk factors, and specific heuristics inform risk judgments for oneself, for friends/peers, and comparative judgments for breast cancer (risk friends/peers - risk self). We recruited an English-speaking, multicultural (57% nonwhite) sample of 184 middle-aged (47 + or - 12 years old), well-educated women
